IL Podiatrist Discusses ICP and Itchy Feet During Pregnancy
Cholestasis, also known as intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) or obstetric cholestasis, is a liver condition that affects about one or two of every 1,000 expectant parents. It’s also a potential cause of itching in pregnancy, particularly if you are experiencing itchiness of the feet and hands. Neha Singla Jani, DPM, a podiatrist at Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, explains that cholestasis occurs as a result of reduction or stoppage in the liver’s ability to process bile, the digestive fluid produced by the liver.

“The pathogenesis of itching in cholestasis is unknown, but some hypotheses have been proposed, including bile acid accumulation in the skin that acts as agents that cause itching,” Dr. Jani explains. Cholestasis usually happens toward the end of pregnancy, says Dr. Jani, and can be experienced throughout the body or in localized areas. If the itching is confined to specific parts of the body, the hands and feet are the most common areas.

Anthony Iorio, DPM, MPH has been appointed as the Wound Care Director at The Endocrine Associates of West Village (EAWV) in Long Island City, New York. The wound care center is part of the first non-hospital American Diabetes Association approved diabetes center in New York City.

Six Tips for Your Employee Cell Phone Policy
A smartphone can be a distraction to staff members and also a potential HIPAA violation waiting to happen. Here are tips to avoid that at your practice.
1. What Fits Your Practice? - solve a current employee issue, or maybe your team is already responsible. Perhaps you want phones kept off employees’ persons except during breaks - or perhaps you’re aware that parents on your staff need their phones nearby to stay in contact with kids home alone. Some small practices have no break room for cell phone usage. Others always have one clinical room open.
While each office is different, popular provisions include the following:

Cell phone use in front of patients, at the front desk, or in patient areas is not acceptable.

Cell phones may only be used in the break room / outside the practice / in a designated area.
-
Cell phones may not be used on the clock, except during designated breaks.
What about photos or recordings, whether of patients, employees, or records/working areas? You will likely need a separate policy covering these topics.

Who doesn't think excising a wart and applying a skin graft isn't overkill? In the 40+ years of practice, I have removed many warts but I would never and will never excise a wart that requires a skin graft. There is a relatively new treatment for warts called Swift. Swift uses microwave energy to stimulate the immune system to eradicate the wart w/o disability or down time. As an added benefit, the CPT code is CASH. It's true that some patients or parents are reluctant to pay out-of-pocket. But with today's high deductibles. it may actually be less expensive than paying for multiple treatments with sal acid that can take months to resolve. And with the immune system stimulated, it's unlikely the wart will recur.
Swift is one of the best investments I have made. No downtime and CPT CASH!
