Dry Flaky Feet Could Indicate Thyroid Problems: IL Podiatrist
If you notice dry, flaky feet, It could be thyroid problems, especially if moisturizer doesn’t help. When the thyroid gland (the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck) goes on the fritz, it doesn’t properly produce thyroid hormones, which control metabolic rate, blood pressure, tissue growth, and skeletal and nervous system development.
|
|
Dr. Marlene Reid |
“Thyroid problems cause severe dryness of the skin,” says Marlene Reid, DPM, a foot specialist at Family Podiatry Center in Naperville, IL. “When we see cracking on the feet, or if moisturizer doesn’t improve dryness over a few days, we usually refer patients to their primary doctor to make sure their thyroids are okay.” Brittle toenails can also signal thyroid complications.

Two-Day Schuster Seminar Features Leaders in Biomechanics
NYCPM hosted the 7th annual Richard O. Schuster, DPM, Memorial Biomechanics seminar on November 9th and 10th. The seminar was coordinated and chaired by Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM, a professor and past chair of the department of orthopedics and biomechanics at NYCPM, and was made possible by a significant contribution from a grateful patient of Dr. D’Amico who was cured of his persistent heel pain.

|
Back row (L-R) Drs. Steven Levitz, Richard Blake, Darryl Phillips, Howard Dannenberg, Justin Greisberg, Paul Coffin. Front row, (L-R) Drs. Michael Trepal, Robert Eckles, Joseph D’Amico, Stanley Beekman, and Jinsup Song |
The sell-out gathering of biomechanics leaders from across the U.S. and abroad heard presentations that focused on current concepts in biomechanics, including limb-length discrepancy; the relationship of foot dysfunction to pain in the superstructure, especially lower back pain; the effect of foot dysfunction on posture and alignment; the hyper-pronated foot; overuse injuries; and the retention of pediatric rotational disorders affecting adult gait.

Tips to Boost Billing and Collections - Part 5
It’s that time of year again when everyone is planning ways to make the upcoming year their best year yet. If your practice is like most other practices, then one area where you could use some work is billing and collections. Here are some resolutions that can improve your billing and collections in 2020.
5. Review your contracts.
-
Take a little time at the first of the year to review your contracts with payers.
-
Make sure you are aware of any changes from the prior year, especially if those changes require a change in workflow, process, or staff (re)training.
-
Note all filing deadlines for the year ahead.
-
This is also a good time to make a chart of when your contracts come due, so you can plan ahead for any renegotiations.

Query: HIPAA Implications of Windows 7 Support Ending
For those using Windows 7, you are likely aware that Microsoft will no longer provide support for that OS early in 2020. Aside from support issues, what are the HIPAA implications?

RE: OH Podiatrist Shines at House Intelligence Committee Hearings
From: Burton J. Katzen, DPM, Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM
Hats off to Congressman Dr. Brad Wenstrup for being such an eloquent representative of our country and our profession.
Burton J. Katzen, DPM, Temple Hills, MD
While I know very few PM News readers have the opportunity to be watching the hearings of the House Intelligence Committee on TV this week (and last week), I just want to report something no news media is reporting. Our own representative, podiatrist Brad Wenstrup, DPM, is clearly making all of us very proud. His name plate says “Dr.” and his questions have all been very thought-out, probing, and a clear demonstration that he is well learned on the subject. All DPMs should be proud of the voice we all have in Congress, and we can only hope that Brad wishes to continue to stay in Congress, as it’s clear he has the respect from both-sides. Once again, we should all be proud of our 2018 PM Podiatry Hall of Fame inductee.
Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM, Boca Raton, FL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3 | |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Dr. Jacobs cites seven problems with the teaching of biomechanics to the profession in 2019. His seventh critique was that many CME seminars are filled with "pay to play' biomechanical presentations which are "edgy and unproven." This made me chuckle because I have sat in on biomechanical lectures where a speaker espoused theories to justify his or her line of orthotics and two hours later a different speaker representing a different company says something that is the exact opposite. Too often, true experts are not invited to the podium.
This problem leads into Jacob's third critique (The overwhelming number of journal publications in the area of biomechanics are by professionals other than podiatrists). Criticism without solutions is blowing into the wind. The only solution is for the APMA, the schools, the labs, and private donors to make the sacrifices, fund the research, do it at an affordable price at our colleges, and publish good papers in our journals. That way we can take biomechanics out of the realm of private opinion and into the realm of evidence-based medicine.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

Raymon was a classmate, colleague, and friend whom we held close to our hearts. He will never truly leave us. He will live on in the kindness he shared and the love he brought into our lives. Good brother, rest in heaven. Peace and blessings to his wife Valerie and family. My condolences.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE) - PART 1 | |
From: Alan L. Bass, DPM, CPC
In response to Dr. Markinson’s comments on the coding answers for this question, let me begin by stating one unequivocal fact. Billing and coding is not the same as practice. There is always the unknown on why certain claims are denied. What we actually perform and document sometimes are not the same as what we will actually get paid for.
I was a student of Dr. Markinson’s at NYCPM and have the highest respect for his work in podiatry and dermatopathology, but billing and coding is not simple and straightforward. Since obtaining my credentials as a CPC, I have a new appreciation of what insurance companies look for when auditing...
Editor's note: Dr. Bass' extended-length letter can be read here.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGINE) - PART 2 | |
From: Paul Busman DPM, RN
Name Withheld wrote, "I recently performed an exostectomy for a patient with adjacent toe osteophytes causing interdigital pressure wounds. When we called the Horizon of Alabama insurance company for pre-authorization, we were informed the second procedure on a separate toe would not be paid at all and the first procedure had a 90-day global period. I notified the patient that he would be responsible for payment for the second procedure, so he scheduled it for after the 90 day-period."
It burns me right the heck up to read things like this. Seriously, how much time and effort would be spent on an exostosis of that adjacent toe, given that the patient was already in the OR, prepped, and likely under some degree of sedation? 5 minutes? 10? Even if the exostectomy performed after the global period is completely paid for, is it worth it to make the patient, in addition to having to take time off from work for the procedure, having to take more time off for pre-op bloods, going through a second round of sedation, enduring a second painful recovery, and possibly having to take more time off from work during the recovery and post-op visit?
One of the vital questions I was taught to ask myself when contemplating any surgery or procedure was "would I want someone to do this to my Mother?". If the patient in this situation was my Mom, I would be outraged by a doc making her wait 90 days just so he or she could make a few more bucks.
Paul Busman DPM, RN, Frederick, MD
