INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Dancing in Heels Can Actually Reduce the Risk of Falling: UK Podiatrist

When should a woman stop wearing high heels? It may sound frivolous, but, in fact, high heels — and their effect on balance — could have serious implications for women’s health and even their lifespan. Falls are the biggest cause of accidental death in the over-75s. And they are frighteningly common — every year one in three people aged over 65 has a fall.

Mike O'Neill

But ballroom dancing — effectively exercising in heels — is recommended for over-65s as one of the best ways to improve balance. The benefits of dancing ‘are far greater than the risks of falling’, says Mike O’Neill, consultant podiatrist at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Six Ways to Avoid a RAC Audit - Part 3

Small- and medium-sized practices are not below the RAC radar and should heed the following succinct steps to avoid and/or minimize exposure.

5. Four eyes are better than two — Have a certified professional coder (CPC) review several chart notes for every provider, every year, for appropriate coding and documentation. Use a CPC who audits medical records for a living; we pay ours $25 per chart; she is one of the best investments we make every year. I recommend this investment even for practices that have their own CPCs, as I have found most office-based CPCs do not conduct ongoing coding and documentation audits.

6. Document medical necessity — When ordering a test or procedure, make sure you document why it is needed. MRIs and outpatient physical therapy are two of the services the OIG feels are overutilized. The 2015 OIG Work Plan identifies many OIG/RAC targets.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Cost-Effective Surgical Techniques
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM

I recently received my copies of Podiatry Today and JFAS. I noticed that there were 7 different hammertoe repair devices advertised. I am sure that every one of these devices are good. There are technical advantages and disadvantages of each. The problem that I have is the cost!

In contrast, look at the article in JFAS authored by Michael Canales, DPM out of Cleveland, OH describing a technique that many of us have used for years that uses a couple of centimeters of a threaded K-wire (I like the bend he puts in the end). Kudos for Dr. Canales! Looks like he is teaching his residents rational and cost-effective surgery techniques in Cleveland—Now if I could just get one of those guys or gals to come down here to Mississippi!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Eddie Davis, DPM

My office lacked space for a conventional x-ray system. I chose the Orthoscan Mobile DI which is a hybrid x-ray/fluoroscope unit, and I could not be happier. It is remarkably compact, and can be moved from room to room. Its low radiation output requires minimal shielding. Unlike many fluoroscopes, this unit has a flat plate detector which allows for weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing images. Images are saved to a hard drive and can be transferred to a USB thumb drive.

The image quality is outstanding. Image sharpness and image size can be adjusted in real time. It's fluoroscopic function allows motion studies and fluoroscopic-guided joint injections. I use both ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance for injections. Ultrasound guidance is better for soft tissues injections such as nerve blocks, but fluoroscopy is better for joints. I have been able to use the unit to guide needles into some tight or hard-to-access areas such as intercuneiform joints and the posterior subtalar joint. It is more expensive than standard digital x-ray units,  but I have been pleased with its versatility and ability to enhance procedures. I feel that it has more than paid for itself.
