CA Podiatrist is Devoted to Salvaging Limbs and Lives
Myron Hall, DPM, a podiatrist at MLK hospital, has devoted the last five years to salvaging limbs and lives. Dr. Hall never expected to be dealing with matters of life and death when he decided to go into podiatry. He thought he’d be mostly doing sports medicine.
|
Dr. Myron Hall |
After an early career as a naval officer, Hall worked at the Kaiser Permanente facility in Fontana before opening a private practice in Beverly Hills, with staff privileges at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he does complex foot and ankle reconstruction surgeries. But he promised his mother, Gloria, that he wouldn’t just treat the rich. Growing up, he knew poverty firsthand.

NY Podiatrist Discusses Workout Socks
When it comes to workouts, it may seem like one sock fits all—but the truth is, what’s on your feet can make a difference in your fitness routine. “By being mindful about your sock selection, you can avoid some of the headaches and performance issues that get in the way of an optimal workout routine, from friction-induced chafing to poor circulation,” says Hillary Brenner, DPM, a podiatric surgeon with practices in New York and Holmdel, New Jersey.
|
Dr. Hillary Brenner |
There’s no need to get too stressed over selecting the right pair, she says—the wrong sock won’t make or break your sweat session the way a shoe might. “They’re not going to control the way you’re moving,” explains Dr. Brenner. But what they can do, she adds, is help to mitigate annoyances and achieve a safer and more comfortable workout (blister-free) jogs?

CO Podiatrist Holds Winter Boot Drive for the Homeless
When James Yakel, DPM sees people who are homeless standing outside around 21st Avenue and Main Street, he thinks about how cold their feet must be. "I just keep reading about and seeing the amount of homeless in Longmont," Dr. Yakel said. "I see them all the time, and you look at some of their shoes when they are walking and they're walking on what looks like cardboard."
|
Dr. James Yakel |
Yakel has owned Colorado Center for Podiatric Sports Medicine in Longmont for about eight years and knows the importance of protecting feet from cold weather to prevent frostbite. To help people experiencing homelessness stay warm this winter, he has partnered with Brown's Shoe Fit and Homeless Outreach Providing Encouragement to host a first-time Boots for HOPE Drive to collect gently used men's and women's winter boots, work boots, and new socks. The donations will be given to HOPE, a non-profit that provides services and resources to people experiencing homelessness.

MEETING NEWS |
Biomechanics Seminar at NYCPM Launches ‘Truth Search’
The ninth annual Richard O. Schuster, DPM Memorial Biomechanics Seminar, held November 14th at NYCPM embarked on a new “Truth Search,” modelled after Dr. Schuster’s own “Truth Search” in biomechanics, in which he questioned the validity of certain accepted statements and practices in the discipline. Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM launched the new search with a presentation entitled, “The Truth About Equinus,” in which he revealed the results of a study of dorsiflexion rates in patients with musculoskeletal complaints and their ramifications, which didn’t agree with current reported values and accepted practices. Jinwook Song, MD’s presentation, “The Truth of Internal Tibial Torsion” similarly investigated assumptions about that condition.
|
(L-R) Drs. Mark Caselli, John McNerney, Richard L. Blake, Samantha Landau, James Losito, Joseph D’Amico, and Jinsup Song |
Later in the program, Samantha Landau, DPM, MPH’s “Critical Analysis of Studies Refuting the Effectiveness of Orthoses in Children,” likewise set out to examine a premise with subsequent management recommendations that don’t coincide with clinical indications and findings. Dr. Landau is the department’s newest and youngest member, a Fellow in Orthopedics and Biomechanics as well as clinical instructor. Dr. D’Amico, a professor and past chair of the department of orthopedics and biomechanics at NYCPM, coordinates and chairs the Schuster seminar. In all, 13 specialists from around the globe spoke at this seminar, and 160 attended; it was a hybrid event, combining both in-person and online presenters and attendees.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Steps to Start Your Own Independent Practice
The key to launching a successful independent practice is proper planning. Knowing what steps to take and what mistakes to avoid is critical to ensuring a sustainable, profitable practice. Follow these five steps to get started down the right path:
5. Find an appropriate location and space - The adage is true: location IS everything. Be sure to conduct a thorough assessment of your market to determine if a potential location has the patient population you need to sustain your practice for the long-term.
Review population trends, community growth, and new construction permits along with existing or planned locations of other private practices and hospitals. Don’t choose a location based on nostalgia for a neighborhood or what appears to be a bustling location. Do your research and base your decision on facts. Also spend time researching what kind of space will work best for your practice - and your wallet. Finding a walk-in ready medical space or one that only needs a few cosmetic upgrades is a great way to keep costs down, as a full build-out can be very costly, time-consuming, and expensive.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Physician Online Reviews
The multi-dimensional nature of this topic notwithstanding, I wonder if there are any parallels that can be drawn between the collective-sociological analysis of the public’s online social media commentary of our medical institutions’ exam/assessment/plan for managing the current pandemic and the individual-psychological analysis of a patient's online commentary of their doctor’s exam/assessment/plan for their particular medical condition? If so, does this mean anything in a practical context?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Tom Silver, DPM
I would like to add my 2 cents as to what I've learned in almost 40 years of practice: We can't be good at everything in podiatry. So, in your practice, find out what particular things you are good at, enjoy doing, and get consistently good results. Then, become as proficient as possible in those things.
Stay away from the things you are not good at, don't enjoy doing, and don't get consistently good results. Ship these off to other podiatrists (or other medical specialists) who are better at these things and (hopefully) are getting better results.
I found that the things I'm not as good at always seem to cause the most headaches and the things I'm best at, enjoy doing, and get consistently good results have created a practice full of happy, grateful patients and a happy staff and doctor.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Dr. Roth and I, being senior practitioners, have seen so many treatments for verrucae come and go. Yes, it may be economically advantageous for a practitioner to surgically remove a large verrucous mass and do a graft to close it, but what has the practitioner accomplished? For sure if he or she suspects that there is a malignancy, then doing a total excision or biopsy may indeed be the best first choice; however, we must keep in mind that, in most cases, we are dealing with an active virus that is causing a lesion or lesions, which may or may not be painful.
Many years ago, at the annual Dermfoot seminar, I heard a professor from Johns Hopkins lecture that if the verrucae are painless, and he leaves them alone. Surgically removing these growths not only leads to post-operative pain and healing time, but does not prevent the virus from spreading and forming more warts. So, what do we accomplish for the patient in light of studies that show that acid therapies are at least 75% effective in alleviating the problem via what the late Dr. Abrams labelled "auto-innoculation?" Hence, in our practice and I assume in Dr. Roth's practice, surgery for warts is last, not first, on our list of treatments.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) |
From: Tom Hardiman, DPM
I was horrified and in disbelief that a professional and responsible source such as PM News would choose to publish a piece about Prof. Yasmin Ezzatvar's very questionable and misleading "study." This professor from Spain with a doctorate in physical therapy, who is a faculty member at a nursing school, performed a literature search and only included 23 studies in her final review.
Making a final conclusive statement such as "No differences have been found in the risk of other complications, such as amputations, among people of other racial or ethnic groups" is absolutely untrue and irresponsible. This is utterly insulting to...
