Bako Foundation Completes Four $100K Endowed Scholarship Commitments
The Bako Medical Education Foundation (BMEF), a non-profit organization that seeks to advance diagnostic excellence in the field of podiatry, announced today that it has completed the funding of endowed scholarship commitments to each of four podiatric medical colleges. “BMEF sponsors institutions that seek to train the podiatric medical community on innovations and best-practices in medical diagnostics,” said Suzanne MacCormack, Chair of the Bako Medical Education Foundation.

MN Podiatrist Provides Tips on Buying Running Shoes
When in doubt about buying running shoes, always go for comfort, says Paul Langer, DPM, a podiatrist in the Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minnesota area. “There is not one brand or model that works for all runners or all foot types,” he notes. “Instead, focus on the feel and the fit, and trust your instincts.”
|
Dr. Paul Langer |
Be sure to give your running shoes a real test drive, as what might feel comfortable while walking the length of the department store might not work when you’re actually out their clocking mileage. “Comfort decreases from standing to walking to running, so when selecting running shoes, you have to run in them,” says Dr. Langer, who recommends trying on at least three shoes before making a final selection.

Diabetics Need Annual Foot Exam to Assess Ulcer Risk: Spanish Podiatrist
According to Dr. José Luis Lázaro, professor and head of the Diabetic Foot Unit at the Complutense University, "to establish a correct preventive approach, it is necessary to evaluate the degree of risk that the patient with diabetes has of developing a foot ulcer. It is necessary to know the neurological and vascular status, and the presence of deformities and, in this risk assessment, the podiatrist plays a key role."
|
Dr. José Luis Lázaro |
“All people with diabetes should go at least once a year to the podiatrist to determine the degree of risk of suffering a foot ulcer and to assess the health status of this,” says the president of the General Council of Colleges of Podiatrists.

Crocs Have Many Uses, But They are Not for Hiking: TX Podiatrist
According to podiatrist Roxanne Toole, DPM, Crocs are great to wear after any kind of foot surgery or for diabetes sufferers in hot climates. This is down to their wide fit with a large toe box and ventilation that helps your feet breathe. Another benefit is that Crocs are lined with an antibacterial layer that prevents bacterial and fungal infections.
|
Dr. Roxanne Toole |
As well as their benefits for foot injuries, Crocs are also comfortable, lightweight, and have adequate arch support for everyday wearing. You can wear them barefoot without socks and not suffer from blisters. Overall, Crocs are kind and forgiving to your feet around the house and garden or even down to the shops but for any serious hiking, you really want some proper hiking footwear.

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
Diabetes Complications Affect Different Ethnic Groups Unevenly: Study
Professor and researcher of the Faculty of Nursing and Podiatry of the University of Valencia (UV), Yasmín Ezzatvar, together with researchers from other centers, concludes that the racial or ethnic group of patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus influences the prognosis of the disease, due to differences in mortality, risk of kidney disease or risk of cardiovascular disease. In their research, they analyzed data from 2,416,516 diagnosed people. This is the first study to quantify these differences.
|
Prof. Yasmín Ezzatvar |
The study indicates that, compared to white people, those of Maori ethnicity had an 88 percent higher risk of mortality from all causes, Hispanic-American patients have a lower risk of suffering from macrovascular complications of diabetes such as cardiovascular disease, and Black people have a 54 percent increased risk of end-stage renal disease. No differences have been found in the risk of other complications, such as amputations, among people of other racial or ethnic groups.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Steps to Start Your Own Independent Practice
The key to launching a successful independent practice is proper planning. Knowing what steps to take and what mistakes to avoid is critical to ensuring a sustainable, profitable practice. Follow these five steps to get started down the right path:
4. Develop a Project Plan - The single best way to make sure that you don’t miss a step in your planning is to acquire or develop a project plan. This plan should include a checklist of the items that need to be completed before practice launch as well as a list of ongoing tasks. Some examples of ongoing tasks include state and federal registrations, compliance, credentialing and contracting, marketing, hiring and human resource management.
Don’t let the number and complexity of tasks scare you. You can successfully open your practice if you educate yourself on what needs to be done and then set timelines for each task’s completion.

RESPONES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) |
From: Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH
This case sounded like making a mountain out of a molehill. With the multitude of conservative care choices available, why would any professional put this patient at such risk of doing an extensive plantar excision? My only guess with the billing question was this is about justifying surgery for one's own pocket.
Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA

RESPONSES/CPMMENTS (MON-CLINICAL) |
From: Simon Young, DPM
I am glad Dr. Wallace, a classmate, is retiring in good health. I know he was a residency director for many years and has done his fair share of pedal surgeries. I want to ask why do insurance companies care about monies, but we must be philanthropists. Money is needed to pay expenses.
I am glad Dr. Dabdoub is boasting about how many risky surgeries he performed. There needs to be a fair balance for remuneration for our work and patient care. This doesn't appear to be happening for us in the near future.
Simon Young, DPM, NY, NY
