NY Podiatrist Discusses Signs of Diabetes in the Feet
Board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon Bruce Pinker, DPM, notes that he often sees diabetes patients with "sores or bruises or cuts on the lower extremities that are slow to heal."
|
|
Dr. Bruce Pinker |
"In the feet, we find [type 2 diabetes] patients with numbness, burning, and tingling," says Dr. Pinker. That's because diabetes can cause diabetic neuropathy, which is a type of nerve damage caused by high blood sugar levels. The good news? According to Pinker, "there are various ways to address diabetic peripheral neuropathy."

CT Podiatrist Participates in Health Fair
Bristol Health partnered with the New Britain-Berlin YMCA to host the first Wellness Fair at the YMCA on Thursday. People were able to talk to Bristol Healthcare professionals, gather resources, take part in screenings, and learn how to live their healthiest lives.
|
|
Dr. Peter Bellezza (L) at health fair |
“A lot of people that come to these events may not be hooked up with a provider yet and they’ve got issues that are limiting the way they do their job or participating in activities. By providing screenings and just giving some helpful free advice, it can kind of get them back to living a better lifestyle and diminishing the pain they’ve been dealing with,” said Peter Bellezza, DPM, MS at Bristol Health Medical Group who was providing foot/ankle screenings.

MD Podiatrists Published in Anticancer Research Journal
Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic (FASMA) doctors Xingpei Hao, MD, Stewart Chang, DPM, Erika Schwartz, DPM, Seth Rubenstein, DPM, Casey Friske, DPM, Sana Shamim, DPM, Eric Masternick, DPM, and Gene Mirkin, DPM have authored a paper Acral Lentiginous Melanoma of the Foot and Ankle, published in Anticancer Research - International Institute of Anticancer Research.

Dr. Xingpei Hao |
Acral lentiginous melanoma is a rare entity on the foot. This study reviews seven cases excised, in FASMA offices, over a three-year period. The preferred treatment is either wide local excision or toe amputation.

Soft Tissue Filler Properties Can Be Altered by a Small-Diameter Needle
In this study, monophasic and biphasic hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and calcium hydroxyapatite filler were analyzed for changes in particle size and physical properties after passing through a 30-gauge needle. Monophasic HA fillers with smaller particle sizes were associated with minor changes between particle sizes without any differences in rheological properties. Biphasic HA fillers with larger particle sizes showed remarkable changes in particle size and rheological properties. Calcium fillers only demonstrated changes in rheological properties.
The role of injection-needle diameter in preventing complications associated with fillers remains a controversial issue. This study demonstrates that injection through small-bore needles may lead to altered physical properties and rheological equilibrium of soft tissue fillers. As these changes may potentially affect clinical performance, the authors recommend avoiding small-bore needles for filler injection.

Tips to Boost Billing and Collections - Part 2
It’s that time of year again when everyone is planning ways to make the upcoming year their best year yet. If your practice is like most other practices, then one area where you could use some work is billing and collections. Here are some resolutions that can improve your billing and collections in 2020.
2. Talk to your patients in an effective way.
-
Make sure your staff knows how to communicate with patients about their bills. Never ask patients whether they want to pay their bill now.
-
Instead, offer a choice of two options for paying. Assume that they're going to pay and ask them if they prefer to pay by check or credit card.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE) | |
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM
Unbundling could be illegal. Healthcare fraud is essentially the case when you attempted to make more money than otherwise entitled to receive. Just by sending the "unbundled" codes in the mail could be a crime. This is true, even if the third party did not pay for the charges.
Do not get into a factual dispute about what is "included" or "not included in the global", that is, what might well be the better "global code" or bundled code "package". Find the true legal issue. Did you ultimately make more money than otherwise entitled to? Find what the third party would have paid for the (better) bundled code.
Also, DPMs should understand that global "period" is not the same as a global "code". A particular global code, from what I understand, is a bundled code or package of other AMA CPT codes and may include other billable codes, supplies, procedures, and E&M codes. Any DPM getting notifications concerning bundling related matters should immediately seek out a self-audit of all the office's billing and coding business practices.
Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM, Saint Petersburg, FL
