TN Podiatrist Stresses the Importance of Nutrition and Wound Healing
Nashville General Hospital (NGH) is filling prescriptions for improved outcomes with their unique Food Pharmacy, which provides patients with access to nutritious dietary options. In addition to the Food Pharmacy, NGH works to keep patients educated and engaged in all aspects of self-care. Andrew Pierre, DPM, a podiatrist and fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeon with NGH, said the most common chronic disease they see is diabetes, which can easily lead to an increased risk of infections, difficult-to-treat wounds, and a higher rate of amputations. Diet and nutrition are key factors in managing diabetes, but Dr. Pierre said counseling also plays a critical role in care management.
|
|
Dr. Andrew Pierre |
"One of the things that I tell my patients is that food is medicine. It's really all about education and making sure they understand their disease process," said Pierre. "Once the patients understand the disease process and the complications that can happen with it, they are less susceptible to developing wounds and amputations."

Custom Orthotics More Effective than OTC Devices: NJ Podiatrist
Shoe inserts are a podiatrist’s not-so-secret weapon to combat foot pain. If your favorite pair of shoes is a walking nightmare, don’t take another step. “Shoe inserts, also known as orthotics, help to improve your foot health by stabilizing your mid-foot joints and supporting your arches,” says Velimir Petkov, DPM, a podiatrist at Premier Podiatry in Clifton, NJ. “Providing proper arch support can improve your overall gait and posture, and therefore relieve your ankle, knee, hip, and lower back pain. In addition, proper shoe inserts can relieve heel pain and reduce arthritic pain."
|
|
Dr. Velimir Petkov |
There are many different types of shoe inserts, from options that slide into your high heels to those made specifically for your boots or sneakers. When possible, however, Dr. Petkov prefers to go the custom route. “Custom molded orthotics are so much more accurate and effective than store-bought over-the-counter inserts,” he says. Dr. Petkov uses an in-office 3D-scanning device that captures each foot individually to create custom orthotics for his patients.

UK Podiatrist Hopeful New Clinic Can Aid COVID-19 Economic Recovery
A businesswoman is hopeful that her new podiatry clinic can have a “domino effect” by attracting scores of people to spend cash in a Moray town during the pandemic. Banff Chiropody and Podiatry’s owner Sasha Cameron believes the opening of a clinic in Buckie can bring more people to the town, and in turn aid Covid economic recovery.

Cameron said her clinic would reduce “pressure” on the NHS as they focus on the battle against the virus. She added: “We have been fully booked for first two weeks and received a really good response in Buckie. We are seeing a greater number of people coming through our doors and we are happy to help as they aren’t able to get those type of NHS services currently during the pandemic."

Podiatrists Ranked #22 on Highest Paying Jobs List
The average working American earns $53,490 a year, but there are dozens of jobs where the average salary is more than twice that. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed average annual salaries for over 800 occupations from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to identify the 79 jobs with six-figure average salaries. Not surprisingly, many of the jobs on this list are in healthcare.

Reducing Medical Practice Embezzlement Risk with Cash Controls - Part 7
Front-desk embezzlement schemes are not uncommon and they are typically the result of loose protocols and lack of oversight. Reduce your financial risk by tightening cash controls using these proven practices.
7. Pay attention to the personal situations of staff.
-
A person who cannot pay their mortgage or has racked up thousands of dollars in credit card debt can feel desperate and act in ways they normally may not. Or, in the case of the Jaguar-driving receptionist, the luxury car should have been a signal to the manager and physicians that something was amiss.
-
Yes, we recognize that physicians and managers are busy. But when it comes to managing people who handle your money, there is no amount of busy that should get in the way of good old acuity and common sense.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) | |
From: Stephen J. Bennett, DPM
I have long used gentian violet in my office but would not prescribe/recommend it to patients because of its tendency to jump out of the bottle and stain some items of clothing or even furniture. Instead, I have used Lotrimin solution or Oxistat, or a short course of oral antifungals.
Did anybody know that gentian violet has been listed as a potential cancer causing agent? In Canada, it is now unavailable and in California, one must declare its risks before use (proposition 65), but it is still available OTC in NYC. I have since modified my office protocol.

From: Jack Ressler, DPM
I assume a failed chart audit could mean two things; one being an excuse not to pay your chart fee which I seriously doubt they would pay anyways. The other failed chart audit probably means Ciox couldn’t find anything more to over-bill Medicare for. Podiatrists are totally being harassed by these Medicare Advantage care audits. We as a group should stand together and not be intimidated by these companies. I got a call from PICA a couple of weeks ago pertaining to a query I submitted to PM News about being harassed. Dr. Taubman, the President and Chief Medical Officerof PICA wanted to reach out to me concerning this problem.
He had a representative call me. She said they are getting several calls weekly from podiatrists asking for advice concerning these audits. She told me that they are monitoring this situation. They probably cannot do anything about it, but we as a profession do have their support.

Congrats to Dr. Bryan Caldwell on his new role as Kent State Dean. I was a former student of his and always found him to be intelligent, honest, and approachable. I have no doubts that he will be successful in this position. Wise choice by KSUCPM!
