AT THE COLLEGES |
TUSPM Houses Secret Shoe Museum
Temple University's School of Podiatry houses a secret collection that is sure to have you kicking up your heels. The school's corridors are lined with cases and cases of shoes, making it look like a visual ode to footwear. Some of the notables include a pair of silk sandals from Lucille Ball, platforms that Sally Struther's wore on the show All in the Family and a pair of Manolo Blahnik sandals that Joan Rivers wore to her daughter's wedding rehearsal.

The collection also includes footwear from four First Ladies and President Ronald Reagan. The whole collective was put together for the bicentennial. Athletes are represented too. There are the Nikes that Dawn Staley wore when she won the Olympic gold medal in Athens, Bernie Parent's Stanley Cup skates, shoes from Joe Frazier, Dr. J, Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, Andre Agassi, and the legendary Billie Jean King.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
Stilettos Can be Dangerous: NY Podiatrist
While it is known that shoes can be lethal weapons — last year, Ana Trujillo of Texas was sentenced to life in prison for stabbing her boyfriend to death with a 5½-inch stiletto heel. They are not always easily accessible when they are on your feet. And they tend to handicap one of the best strategies for self-defense: running away.
|
Dr. Robert Conenello |
But despite warnings about the perils of heels, and the havoc they can wreak on backs and ankles (“Working out in heels is really bad for your calves, and can cause tears or tendinitis,” said Dr. Rob Conenello, a sports podiatrist in Orangeburg, NY, and the past president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine), it’s unlikely that urban women are going to stop wearing them anytime soon. So, some concerned with safety are factoring in that reality.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
Darco Merger With HG Medical Brings High-Tech Manufacturing to Huntington, WV
With all Darco has accomplished in its 30 years, the most exciting thing to happen at Darco is now underway. "HG Medical has 85 employees at its office in Germany, and this is a great opportunity to not just bring manufacturing in, but bring high-tech manufacturing in, that's something Huntington just doesn't see," says Darco President H. Darrel Darby II.

Implants produced by the HG Medical facility at Darco are manufactured on four Swiss lathes that cost around $400,000, each with its own name. Darco has contributed more than $500,000 to the APMA Educational Foundation to provide scholarships to podiatry students nationwide. Darby's father, Dr. H. Darrell Darby, was a staunch supporter of education. He insisted that a designated portion of Darco's sales be used to fund student scholarships.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS |
Bret Ribotsky: You started using lasers for onychomycosis in 2007 during the severe downturn in the economy. How were you able to get patients to spend significant money during such a time?
|
Dr. Annette Joyce |
Annette Joyce: Everyone thought I was crazy, even my husband, but I learned that my years in practice gave my reputation validity. When I explained something I felt passionate for, patients sensed this, and they wanted a solution for their problem. Even today (after many changes in laser equipment), a day has not gone by where I have not done a laser procedure. When I started doing laser procedures, I offered other physicians in town free treatments. This made me the laser podiatrist and helped increase my place on the medical team in my community.
Meet the Masters airs live on Tuesday night. This week's guest is to be announced. You can register for this and future events by clicking here.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Five Firing Tips for Medical Practice Managers - Part 3
• Keep your cool. Employees are often angry or defensive when dismissed, which can fan the flames of litigation. Give them an opportunity to vent and offer feedback. At no point during a termination should managers escalate the emotional response by making personal attacks or expressing frustration, says Snyder. Keep it professional, cite the reasons for their dismissal, and thank them for their service.

QUERIES (EMR) |
Query: Password Security for EHR
I have recently switched to a new EHR system. It requires me to enter the company's website into my browser and log in using a user name and password. From a security standpoint, it feels like something is missing. Shouldn't there be more to accessing tens of thousands of patient records than entering a user name and password?
Name Withheld
Editor's Comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. Your query underscores the importance of having a complicated username and password. These days, many data critical sites require at least one capital letter, one number, and one symbol. An additional security feature is a Captcha generator to ensure that robots are not trying to enter the site via brute force.
It is also important to change your password frequently. Many security experts recommend that this be done at least once every 90 days.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: Investing in Evil
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
I'm on the YangTse River now on a river cruise boat. The recent posts on investing in high paying dividend stocks inevitably brings focus on tobacco stocks. Tobacco stocks have paid a notoriously high dividend for many years. That continues to this day. Chinese people smoke at a much higher rate than Americans. My wife and I frequently have a "morals" discussion on the issue of openly investing in evil.
It's an interesting discussion. Is it appropriate for doctors to invest in evil? Are you selling your soul to the devil? Will you be tempted to look up tobacco dividend reports after you move away from this site? How many of you would consider it? By the way, the hallway decks stink of cigarette smoke.
Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM, Seattle, WA
