AT THE COLLEGES
Scholl College Recognizes Outstanding Student Research

Twelve Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine students presented their work at a university-wide event on Friday, October 31. This was the sixth year that Scholl College students have received support for research training by an NIH T35 Training Grant. Each student spent eight weeks this past summer with one or more mentors working full-time on research endeavors. Projects varied greatly among students and included foci in basic sciences, biomechanics, medicine, and surgery.

(L-R) Jeffrey Lin, Haonan Lin, Elizabeth Neubeauer, Bryce Rich, Rona Law, Michelle Branigan, Emily Chau, and Dr. Stephanie Wu.

The poster session’s first place winner, Rona Law, and runner-up, Bryce Rich, will receive funding to present their work at the Midwest Student Biomedical Research Forum in Omaha, NE in 2015. Scholl College faculty member and research mentor Stephanie Wu, DPM, MSc stated, "The caliber of research being presented from students throughout the university was exceptional, so it was particularly gratifying to receive numerous compliments on the work of the Scholl students from faculty in other programs."

Podiatry is More Than Surgery of the Feet: New Zealand Podiatrist

With over 20-years experience in sports massage and ten years in podiatry in New Zealand, Julie McLellan has decided to call Rarotonga home. McLellan is the first and only sports podiatrist on the island and is open for consultations at her home in Muri. The qualified podiatrist has worked with New Zealand’s best athletes including Olympic triathletes.

Julie McLellan

Julie says people have misconceptions about podiatry, which is more than surgery on the feet. An important aspect of podiatry, and one which she particularly favors, is identifying the cause for the pain as well as educating people on movement and footwear. “There is so much potential on the island to educate people about their movement and footwear,” says McLellan. Some people don’t understand the connection between the hip, feet, and knees which can affect a person’s posture and movement.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1A
RE: Distance Running for Patient Post MPJ Fusion? (Peter Riznyk, DPM)
From: Kevin A. Kirby, DPM

I have had very good results with 1st metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ) arthrodesis procedures in distance runners, with many of them being marathon runners with absolutely no pain in their 1st MPJs post-surgically when they run. In fact, I have often found that, pre-operatively, patients with 1st MPJ degenerative joint disease will report that running actually is less painful for them than walking.

In running, the center of mass (CoM) of the body is rising away from the ground during propulsion when the 1st MPJ is required to dorsiflex, whereas during walking, the CoM of the body is falling toward the ground during propulsion when the 1st MPJ is required to dorsiflex. It is possible that since the body is moving away from the ground during propulsion in running, the demands on 1st MPJ dorsiflexion are less than that during walking. Further research needs to be done on this subject to confirm my hypothesis.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1B
RE: Distance Running for Patient Post MPJ Fusion? (Peter Riznyk, DPM)
From: Richard A Stanley, DPM

As an alternative to a fusion, consider the Wright Medical MDI implant. I have a marathon runner and a senior decathlon competitor both actively participating with this without incident. The procedure is quite simple and there is so little bone resection that should it fail to provide relief, a fusion can still be performed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

The American Podiatric Medical Association and the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine are doing society a service by advising athletes with foot and ankle injuries to not play their hardest until they heal. There is, however, an elephant sitting in the living room and it's none other than major league sports teams. These franchises should be setting examples for young and adult weekend athletes by not encouraging an injured athlete to prematurely take the field, but the opposite is often true. The clearest example was in 2004 when they allowed Curt Schilling to pitch in a World Series with a sutured, bleeding foot. His blood stained socks are on display in the Hall of Fame.

During the normal season, we often see athletes get injured and come out to play a day or two later because they are great athletes and it's all about winning at all costs. In private practice, we often will see a patient's father or mother force a kid against our advice to engage in the "weekend soccer" game even though the patient was advised to rest. Society needs to pay more attention to the APMA and AAPSM and allow injuries to heal, even if it means the "hometown" team will not do as well.
