TUSPM Celebrates Tenth Anniversary of Fit Feet For Special Olympics

As part of the Sports Medicine Club, members of the third-year class of the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) participated over the two-day event gathering screening data for the Healthy Athletes Program. 133 Special Olympians were screened over two days for foot size, morphology, skin and nail disorders, and gait.

Jim Dodds of Hanger Corporation (L) and Dr. Howard J. Palamarchuk (R) flanking students covering Sunday Day 2 of the Special Olymplcs

Each athlete was given a pair of heat-molded insoles, made possible through a generous donation  by Apex Corporation. The event was organized by Mr. Jim Dodds, certified pedorthist and orthotist of Hanger Corporation, and Howard Palamarchuk, DPM, Associate Professor, Department of Biomechanics, Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. The students came away with both an educational and rewarding experience.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
Medical Devices Will be Biggest Development for Diabetes: AZ Podiatrist

The prognosis for individuals with ulceration and amputation is poor, with a five-year mortality rate of 43-55%. Podiatrists play a leading role in the management of ulceration, providing treatments including wound debridement, dressing, and pressure relief. It has been suggested that 80% of amputations are potentially preventable through the provision of well structured, quality care.

Dr. David Armstrong

The Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Center (SALSA) has an extremely good blog which outlines many of the advances and future developments in diabetes care. We asked David Armstrong, DPM, Professor of Surgery and Director of SALSA what he felt would be the biggest development. “As the line between medical devices and consumer electronics becomes more and more blurred, we will become more and more able to help our patients manage themselves. We have always been activity doctors – helping people move through their world as best they can - but we now have the means to dose that activity in a meaningful way.”

MEETING NEWS
AAPPM Completes 2015 Conferences with Visit to Nashville

The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) completed its 2015 schedule of events with an energetic Fall Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee. This marked the first AAPPM visit to the Music City, and the 2015 Fall Conference began just hours after the famous Country Music Awards concluded. The AAPPM crowd of nearly 200 physicians, assistants, executive managers, and exhibitors experienced an agenda that featured a full day of workshops, followed by a weekend agenda with featured speakers who offered over 15 hours of continuing education credits.

Attendees at AAPPM Nashville Meeting

AAPPM Education Committee Chairman and AAPPM Secretary Andrew Schneider, DPM, said, “Based upon the success of the new schedule format used here in Nashville, I am already looking forward to the AAPPM Midwinter Conference in Tampa. We will be at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in February with this new schedule format, new speakers, and the hot topics all podiatric practices need to learn.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Five Firing Tips for Medical Practice Managers- Part 2

• Be consistent. Managers and physician owners must also be consistent. You can't bend the rules for your favorite medical assistant and fire the receptionist for the same infraction. If the employee in question is in a protected employment category, based on race, religion, gender, or age, make doubly sure that no pattern of termination even appears to exist. All employees should be treated the same, lest you open the door to discrimination claims, says Ricki Roer, an attorney with Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker in White Plains, NY.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Bruce Lebowitz, DPM

I have read with interest the musings about stocks, predictions, and investing in general. Most people believe that success in investing requires one to buy low and sell high. Human nature, however, drives us to buy when stocks are rising (greed) and sell when stocks are falling (fear). In my opinion, trading is a losing game. Instead, I have learned to find equities that have paid dividends. It is possible to find companies that have not only paid their dividends without missing even once, but have consistently raised their dividends over 25, 50, or even 100 years. Google "dividend aristocrats" for ideas. One could even buy ETFs that hold only such companies.

Dividends are payments of real money that a company has earned and shares with the stock holders. Equity prices go up and down; predictions about how much or which direction they will take is a fool's errand. Warren Buffet has made billions with this philosophy. Receiving dividends and letting them purchase additional shares is a wonderful way to build wealth. When retired, the dividends, rather than sales of accumulated shares, provide a reliable and slowly increasing stream of cash.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Lawrence D. Kassan, DPM

I have been following the current posts regarding investment strategies. As podiatrists, we are the experts in foot and ankle care. A QUALITY financial advisor is the expert for investments and overall financial advisement. A well trained comprehensive and holistic financial advisor who understands the client and knows how to construct a goals-based plan is invaluable. Dr. Adam Kruczay is a fellow surgical podiatrist whom I have known for over 25 years. He retired from medicine due to his business and investment acumen and is now an advisor at Merrill Lynch. He provides this service for me and my family. His focus is on rate of return and wealth accumulation but also on mitigation of risk and tax efficiency. He is an astute businessman and extremely knowledgeable about the full construct of financial advisement. He takes great pride in providing stellar service within the medical community for anything monetary.

The medical paradigm shift is difficult enough; as a former triple board certified surgeon and medical business owner (who still supports the profession and keeps his license), Adam uses his unique education, skills, and background to look through a different lens than a business trained only advisor does. This allows practicing physicians to do what they do best - provide medical and surgical care knowing they have a skilled professional who truly understands and is watching their back.

RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

This shoe is simply Maleficent!

Maleficent’s face is framed from the front of her pointy-toed shoes, while her horns wind their way up your legs. "Walt Disney characters represent the ultimate fantasy," said designer Kobi Levi of his relationship with Disney films.
