APMWA Announces 38th Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 38th Annual Student Writing Competition.
-
All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.
-
There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
-
First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

NYSPMA Joins With NYCPM to Celebrate NY Podiatrist
The New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) celebrated its inauguration of Sandro Frasca, DPM, President of NYSPMA and a member of the NYSPMA Kings Division part of its Strategic Planning committee weekend. The event on November 10th was held on the city experience night cruise with views of the New York City skyline. In attendance were NYSPMA Executive Board members.

NY Podiatrist Discusses Calluses
Calluses are your body's way of protecting the area from further friction or pressure, explains Brad Schaeffer, DPM, a foot and ankle surgeon at Central Park SOLE in New York City. Most calluses aren't painful, Dr. Schaeffer says. In fact, it's perfectly fine to ignore them if they aren't bothering you.

A foot doctor can use a scalpel or surgical blade to trim away your callus if you're having trouble removing the excess skin at home. It's especially important to have a podiatrist tend to your calluses (before attempting any at-home care) if you have diabetes or another condition that causes poor blood flow, because even a minor cut could become seriously infected, Dr. Schaeffer says. The doctor can take off the callus without damaging your healthy skin, helping you avoid complications.

Greenlee's Elderly Appreciate AZ Podiatrist's Monthly Visits
Many seniors have health conditions that make toenail clipping dangerous if ignored or not done correctly. It not only gets harder to bend over to reach your toenails, but diminishing eyesight is also a concern. Cuts and abrasions resulting from poorly trimmed toenails can be uncomfortable and dangerous, particularly in the case of someone who has a health condition such as diabetes. High blood sugar levels can cause nerve damage and poor circulation to the feet and other extremities, making open wounds particularly susceptible to gangrene.

Once a month, Huish trims toenails for those incapable of or who find it very difficult to do it for themselves. Dr. Huish comes to Greenlee via a program sponsored by the Greenlee County Health Department. The program covers the cost of service to patients. That is of particular importance for many of Huish's patients who are elderly and live on fixed incomes.

UK Podiatrist Is Cast Member on Netflix's Till Murder Do Us Part
Netflix's 2023 docu-series, Till Murder Do Us Part, recounts the killings of Derek and Nancy Haysom by including a series of interviews with a cast of real people. The four-part docu-series revolves around the unpacking of how a wealthy couple was murdered in Virginia in 1985. It also focuses on how the suspects, Elizabeth Haysom, and her boyfriend, Jens Soehring, betrayed each other during the trial.

Dr. Sarah Reel is a forensic podiatrist who was involved with Jens' and Elizabeth's footprint examination. Sarah pointed out that, statistically, there is no difference "between a bare footprint and a socked footprint." The doctor suggested that Jens' reference footprint matched closely with the crime scene footprint.

UK Podiatrist's Simple Test to see if Kids' Shoes Need Replacing
Having shoes that fit correctly is incredibly important, so Sports Direct partnered with musculoskeletal podiatrist, Rob Payne from the London Podiatry Centre, to share a clever test parents can do to see if their kids' shoes need replacing. He said, "Parents can easily check shoes to make sure that they are fit for purpose. If a shoe wears prematurely, then this will indicate that the shoe isn’t beneficial for the child."

Rob said, "When placing a shoe flat on a counter, the shoe must be at 90 degrees to the supporting surface and not be tilted in either direction. If it is tilted, then that indicates that the shoe has become distorted by the child and must be replaced. Shoes that tilt excessively or too quickly usually have an internal issue with the structure."

5 Ways to Retain Great Physicians
Healthcare organizations invest significant time, energy, and money into hiring physicians. But according to Douglas Farrago, MD, the author of The Hospital Guide to Physician Retention, very few invest adequate resources into keeping physicians. Here are some steps to take.
4. Assign a staff member as a physician liaison
Douglas Farrago strongly advocates that every practice employ a physician liaison to support doctors in the group. A physician liaison can help orient new hires, provide resources and support, and act as an anchor for doctors in the group. Farrago recalls Jane, a former nurse who worked as a physician liaison in one of his hospital practices. “She was wonderful. She made sure the lounge was stocked. She would get you your white coat, and make sure that you had what you needed.” Farrago points out that a liaison’s job is not as a manager. “This person doesn’t need to be involved in negotiation or employment quarrels. They are just there to help with anything that the group of doctors need.”

Query: ABN
Is it necessary to obtain an advance beneficiary notice of non-coverage (ABN) for a patient that has Medicare and wants a DME item billed? In the scenario that I am dealing with, the patient does not have diabetes but would like custom-made foot orthotics.

Response: There is no statutory requirement for an ABN for foot orthotics as they are never covered unless placed into a shoe which is an integral part of a brace.
In this scenario I would bill: L30XX -GY LT and L3000 -GY RT
The patient will receive a patient responsibility notice and/or it may cross over to the patient's secondary for processing. Diabetes does not qualify a patient for foot orthotics (L3000-L3070) within the orthopedic footwear benefit. Inserts (A5512-A5514) and their requirements are explained within the Therapeutic Shoe LCD for Beneficiaries with Diabetes.
