| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Five Telephone Etiquette Tips for Medical Practice Staff
Meeting patient expectations is the surest way to increase their satisfaction with your practice. Telephone management is a good place to start.
2) Ask if the caller can hold and wait for an answer before putting her/him on hold.
When a receptionist answers a ringing phone with "Doctor's office, please hold," she only thinks she has answered the call. From the patient's point of view, it's worse than hearing the phone continue to ring. No matter how often your hold message tells the caller how important he is, he knows he is being ignored.
The caller has no way to guess the length of the hold. No one likes uncertainty, and this is a guaranteed way to irritate a patient. One downside for the staff is that they must then deal with a grumpy patient. Another is that the patient is very likely to hang up. That means another call for the receptionist to handle later, as well as a patient who is expecting to be irritated. The worst case is that the patient won't call back which means non-compliance or a loss of business.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) | |
From: Gerald Dowling, DPM
Regarding the practitioner who is ready to fully retire and was inquiring about buying malpractice "tail" coverage. Please get tail coverage. It only takes one patient to file a suit, with or without merit, and you will be paying the whole shot yourself. That will not make retirement very pleasant. From your description of present patient care, this should not be horribly expensive, and some companies offer a free tail if you have been insured with them continuously for the last few years.
It is worth checking into. From my 25 plus years working for Professional Protective Insurance before PICA purchased the company, I can tell you that diabetic patients are a high risk. That risk will follow you until the statute of limitations ends, whether you are working or not.
Gerald Dowling, DPM, Bay City, MI
