Podiatry Management Magazine Names OH Podiatrist Consulting Editor
Podiatry Management Magazine has appointed Windy Cole, DPM as its newest Consulting Editor. Dr. Cole is an Adjunct Professor and Director of Wound Care Research at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. She also serves as the National Director of Clinical Safety, Quality, and Education for Woundtech.

FL Podiatrist Conquers the NYC Marathon for Charity
Kyle Johnson, DPM finished the 51st annual NYC Marathon on November 6th, 2022 despite unseasonably hot and muggy weather conditions. Dr. Johnson was able to raise over $3,000 for Team FORCE, a national nonprofit devoted to improving the lives of individuals and families facing hereditary breast, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, colorectal, and endometrial cancers.

Earlier this year, Dr. Johnson was inspired after meeting Mebrahtom "Meb" Keflezighi. Meb, who also resides in Tampa, is the only runner in history to win the New York City Marathon, Boston Marathon, and an Olympic medal. Dr. Johnson acknowledged all his colleagues who supported the effort.

Author Vincent Staschiak, DPM has penned The Adventures of Marvin and Spinster that will bring children’s minds to far-off places! While being a full-time podiatrist in Ohio is his main job, Dr. Staschiak is also uses writing to escape when he is not busy with his patients. This book is indeed close to the author's heart because it is dedicated to his son, Jacob, who came to their family as a surprise and blessing in disguise.

Five Telephone Etiquette Tips for Medical Practice Staff
Meeting patient expectations is the surest way to increase their satisfaction with your practice. Telephone management is a good place to start.
1) Offer to take a message if you are not prepared immediately with the caller.
The receptionist at a practice I know does not take messages. She answers each call on the first or second ring and immediately puts the caller on hold to await attention from another staff member. According to her, these holds typically last five to 10 minutes. My best guess is that the patients are initially surprised and perpetually frustrated by this practice, especially when they only need to leave a message or ask a question that a staff person cannot answer.
How much better would it be for the person answering the phone to give the caller an opportunity to leave a message, go about business, and have the request resolved in a callback? This change would also benefit staff and physicians: the calls could be addressed in batches, on a schedule. Workflows would not be interrupted - which hammers productivity and is a leading cause of mistakes.

Query: Dropping an Insurance Plan
I accept almost all insurance in my area. If I chose to drop one carrier such as United HealthCare (UHC), could I make the UHC patients “self pay” only? Or would I still have to send a claim to UHC if the patient insisted?

Response: If you choose not to participate and “opt out” of a non-Medicare carrier, you are under no obligation to submit the claims and of course you would need to have patients self- pay. You might still wish to assist patients by providing them with a full statement (ICD10/CPT/HCPCS) for them to submit.

Dr. Milione trained at Kern Hospital and later served as an attending to the Florida Hospital East Orlando (currently Advent Health) residency program for many years. He always operated at the foot of the bed looking up at the patient, as opposed to many other attendings we had who preferred to have their backs to the patient and look down on the foot. The two quickly became known to the residents as the "Orlando position" and the "Detroit position".
You could guarantee that when he showed up to the OR, he would be wearing his martini or Philadelphia Eagles scrub hat. He routinely worked with the first-year residents and let us get our hands wet very early and often. The experience was invaluable. He was always a gentleman, and during a time when the local competition was high, he reassured the residents "there's always room for one more." Thank you for the mentorship, Vince. May you rest in peace.

After speaking with colleagues in and outside of the profession, there are cases of false testimony by expert witnesses. The big issue is when a person provides false testimony in your practicing state (Expert witness has license outside your state), there is very little recourse that can be taken. Trying to discipline experts for false testimony is almost impossible.
