OH Podiatrist to Retire from Congress After 6 Terms
Rep. Brad Wenstrup, DPM, an Ohio podiatric surgeon representing what is considered a safe Republican Cincinnati-area seat in Congress, announced late Thursday that he will retire at the end of this term. Wenstrup, 65 was first elected in 2012. He cited his wife, Monica and his two young children, Brad Jr. and Sophia, in his decision to leave Congress.

Though conservative, Wenstrup joined with Democrats in 2021 in backing legislation to prevent patients from receiving “surprise” medical bills for unexpected out-of-network care and to set up an arbitration process for the bills. Later, he led 150 lawmakers in a November 2021 letter asking the Health and Human Services, Treasury, and Labor departments to change how they plan to regulate the arbitration process.

APMA BOT Visits Students at TUSPM
Last week, several members of the APMA Board of Trustees (BOT) traveled to the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) in order to give a presentation on the workings of APMA and membership benefits for students. After a short slide presentation, each Trustee gave a review of their career paths, relating to the students a varied path to both podiatry school and a career afterward.

This was followed by a pizza "meet and greet" where the students and trustees interacted one-on-one for well over one hour. This is all part of the APMA's Student Engagement Committee's project to have a Trustee visit each school and their students, hoping to create 100% student membership and build paths for the future.

ACFAP Elects IL Podiatrist as Newest Board Member
The American College of Foot and Ankle pediatrics (ACFAP) has welcomed Hannah K. Park, DPM of Chicago, IL as its newest Board Member. Dr. Park specializes in pediatrics and is a current fellow of the American College of Foot & Ankle Pediatrics. She is board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. She is fellowship-trained in pediatric orthopaedics from Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, IL as the first podiatrist to graduate from this fellowship.

UK Podiatrist is Chief Allied Health Professions Officer for Northern Ireland
The Department of Health has announced the upcoming appointment of Michelle Tennyson as new Chief Allied Health Professions Officer for Northern Ireland (NI). Tennyson will take up the post in January 2024.

Michelle is the current Deputy Director for Allied Health Professionals within the Public Health Agency in NI. Michelle qualified as a podiatrist in 1995 and has experience working in Health and Social Care Trusts, Public Health, Commissioning and Performance Management.

5 Ways to Retain Great Physicians
Healthcare organizations invest significant time, energy, and money into hiring physicians. But according to Douglas Farrago, MD, the author of The Hospital Guide to Physician Retention, very few invest adequate resources into keeping physicians. Here are some steps to take.
2. Show doctors that you care
Practices need to show physicians that they are valued, says Farrago, who experienced the opposite at one organization he worked for. “Six months after my practice partners and I were recruited to join a new hospital, the CEO didn’t even recognize me,” he says, a striking contrast from the attitude he experienced before he signed his employment contract. “The administration went from throwing us a big party and hugging us to not even acknowledging us. Now, does that leave a mark? It does.”

RE: 14 Insurers Leaving Medicare Advantage

A recent article in Becker's Healthcare revealed that 14 payers are exiting the fraudulent filled Medicare Advantage Market. While some other big movers and shakers will no doubt fill their shoes, perhaps the tide will soon be turning as criminal investigations directed against individuals such as Medical Directors of MA plans are pursued by HHS and OIG.
Here in NY, Catholic Health Systems, a large privately-held medical group to Optum's Pro Health and which has thousands of patients, announced they are leaving the MA market. Hopefully, this is the initial shot across the bow. We can only hope that the future of Medicare is not with private equity companies and the government will no longer tolerate being ripped off.
