AT THE COLLEGES |
NYCPM Names New Dean for Student Services & Enrollment Management
Lisa Lee, MA, recently became Dean for Student Services & Enrollment Management, succeeding Laurence Lowy, DPM, who was Dean for Student Services; Lee retained her previous role as Dean for Enrollment Management. Ms. Lee wanted to keep her role in admissions to remain in contact with students during “their whole lifecycle” here, from initial interviews to orientation, to assisting students with academic and student life needs such as housing, through events for alumni.
|
Lisa Lee |
Ms. Lee has worked for NYCPM since 2001, starting as a recruiter and Assistant Director. Her contact with students begins at their initial interview (she personally interviews about 75% of all candidates) and goes past graduation to alumni cocktail parties and reunions. Now there’s “no disconnect” she says, and that’s the way she likes it.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
Early Screening of Diabetics is Often Limb-Saving: TX Podiatrist
Sam Sanchez was just 21 years old when he found out he had diabetes. Sanchez has now lost three toes, a common reality for diabetics. “I’ve seen a lot of patients walking around their house, step on a tack or sewing needle or an insulin needle, not realize it for a few days,” said podiatrist Dr. Mike Langlois. “By the time they've realized it, it's seeded a very bad infection which is oftentimes limb-threatening.”
|
Dr. Mike Langlois |
That's why Dr. Langlois with University Health System urges diabetics to have their feet examined regularly. “The complications of waiting are quite severe,” said Dr. Langlois. ”I recommend all diabetics come in and at least get screened and determine their level of risk so we can manage them and intervene early.”

PODIATRISTS AND PODOPEDIATRICS |
MA Podiatrist Discusses Genetics and Foot Structure
One easy way to identify children who may have foot problems as adults is to look at the feet of their parents. “Feet are genetically related, just like hair color and eye color,” says Dr. Louis DeCaro. “Apples don’t fall far from the tree. If someone has bad feet, they’re probably going to give them to their kids and their grandkids.” When treating children, DeCaro asks the parents to show him their feet. “Everyone in my treatment room takes off their shoes and socks. I don’t care how ugly you think your feet are—I want to know what the genetics are here.”
|
Dr. Louis DeCaro |
It also works vice versa—the “single best way” DeCaro grows his practice is by asking his adult patients who require complicated surgery to go home and look at their children’s feet—and bring them to his office for preventive care if the children’s feet are similar to their own.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Five Hiring Tips for Medical Practice Managers- Part 5
• Reprioritize. Recruiters in the medical field get too hung up on work experience, says Rob Saunders, a senior consultant with San Francisco-based McKesson Business Performance Services. As the industry becomes increasingly complex, he notes, practices will need to select for adaptability, intelligence, and communication skills to remain competitive. "Too many times this industry tends to recycle people whether or not they're competent," says Saunders. "Just because they've been doing the job for 30 years doesn't mean they were good at it."

DIABETES RESEARCH |
Diabetic Foot Infection Incidence Declines 52% in 15-Year Span
Researchers found a 52% drop in the incidence of diabetic foot infection per 100 diabetes discharges in the U.S. from 1996 to 2010 and a decline in DFI discharges from 86,563 to 77,491 during the study period. The findings in the American Journal of Infection Control, based on information from the CDC's National Hospital Discharge Survey involving 1,059,552 DFI discharges, also revealed that lower-extremity amputation from DFI dropped from 33.2% in 1996 to 17.1% in 2010.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: Telemedicine Consultations
If a person calls from a state where I do not have a license and they are looking for podiatric medical assistance, what is the exact nature of what I can legally do for this person? Is it simply some informative guidance or can it be a patient-specific protocol?
Robert Kornfeld, DPM, Port Washington, NY
Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. The laws on telephone medicine are rapidly evolving. Since these laws vary from state to state, it is best to contact your state board for specific guidance.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: Prediction: Stock Market to Hit 20,000 in 2016
From: Bruce B. Zappan, DPM
I am bullish and forecast the Dow hitting 20,000 in 2016. This is a brave statement since we are already in a six-year bull market. How about that for a prediction? I also feel that the market will retest the 16,000 Dow mark at some point in the future, perhaps in 2017. It's too early to tell when just now with all the geopolitical events worldwide, but I will have a better idea as time progresses within the next year.
The market has already reacted as if the Fed raised interest rates. The dollar is at an all-time high and commodity prices have dropped. The markets have rebounded from the Dow 16,000 correction mark; however corporate growth and profits have not rebounded enough. This is why it is important for the Fed to raise rates to give the economy more direction and confidence. Once they raise rates, expect one or two more rate increases during the year.
I am staying 100% invested in stocks as there always will be market swings, but direction is positive. This time of year, there will be some profit-taking, especially in view of the recent six week market uptick. Remember that bull markets end with a huge uptick where everyone, including your barber and chef, rush to buy stocks. This has not occurred quite yet, but it will, and that's the time to sell.
Bruce B. Zappan, DPM, Philadephia, PA
