Look for Good Traction in Winter Shoes: IL Podiatrist
Podiatrists at SwedishAmerican say making sure we have the proper shoes is key to staying warm and healthy during harsh winter weather. Experts say to wear shoes with a wide toe box that allows for thick socks to be worn underneath. We should also choose wool or cotton socks to keep our feet dry. And pick shoes or boots that provide good arch support and stabilize our ankles.
|
|
Dr. Tiphani James |
“It also brings us ice and snow and so we want to make sure that we have shoes that have good traction because in the winter time, in my field and also in orthopedics, you also see a lot of fractures and injuries in the lower extremities so I would also advise getting great shoes for that,” said SwedishAmerican podiatrist Tiphani James, DPM.

WY Podiatrists Sponsor 31st Annual Shoe and Sock Drive
The Shoes for the Holidays campaign, which provides shoes and socks to people in need in Northern Colorado and southeast Wyoming, will run for its 31st year starting on Friday, Nov. 15. The drive solicits donations of new or gently used shoes, boots, and socks for adults and children in the region. Fort Collins-based Anderson Podiatry Center sponsors the drive.
|
|
Adriann Anderson |
“There hasn’t been a year where organizations have said ‘no, we don’t need any shoes,'” founder Adriann Anderson said. Anderson, COO of Anderson’s Podiatry Center, launched the drive after seeing the need in the community. The podiatry center, which has been in business for 35 years, did work for low-income people and people without insurance. Their patients helped them to see how pervasive the need for basic goods like shoes were in the region, Anderson said.

Slippers Not Ideal for Plantar Fasciitis: NY Podiatrists
To get recommendations for the best slippers for plantar fasciitis, two New York-based podiatrists Mohammad Rimawi, DPM, of Grand Central Footcare, and Bruce Pinker, DPM, of Progressive Foot Care were e-mailed. Both podiatrists noted that the majority of slippers out there are not ideal for people with plantar fasciitis. "Slippers, although stylish and comfortable, can completely lack the support your lower extremity requires," says Dr. Rimawi. "This in effect alters your gait and can lead to an array of foot and ankle issues."
|
|
Drs. Mohammad Rimawi and Bruce Pinker |
Dr. Pinker went so far as to say that he often recommends supportive sandals from brands like Vionic and FitFlop instead of slippers. "In general, most slippers are not supportive," Pinker says. "As a general recommendation, well-constructed sandals [...] are helpful choices that can be used as slippers."

Analysis of FDA Data on Soft-Tissue Filler Complications
In this study, adverse events involving injectable dermal fillers for soft-tissue augmentation, which were reported between 1993 and 2014 within the FDA Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database, were reviewed. Of 3782 complications involving dermal fillers, 44% were associated with hyaluronic acid fillers, 40% were associated with poly-L-lactic acid fillers, 15% complications with calcium hydroxylapatite fillers, and <1% of complications with polymethylmethacrylate fillers. Common adverse events included lumps, infections, allergic reactions, ischemia, and swelling; rare events included triggering of autoimmune reactions, visual disturbances, and stroke.
There is a steady increase in filler procedures being performed not only by dermatologists but also by non-dermatologists and non-physicians in the U.S. This study highlights the importance of appropriate skill and training when administering filler injections. Proper training regarding recognition and management of complications is paramount.

Final Physician Payment Rule Keeps E/M Code Changes
CMS has issued its 2020 final rules for the Physician Fee Schedule, including a streamlining of evaluation and management services (E/M) reporting that was rolled back from an earlier proposal in a change providers applauded. Payments for office visits will receive a slight bump beginning in 2021.
In announcing its latest updates to the fee schedule, CMS claimed a victory in reducing the administrative burden on the nation's doctors. Claiming that the E/M reporting regulations are "burdensome and overly complicated," the agency said it is cutting back on the amount of reporting medical practices have to perform. New patients will have four layers of CPT coding, compared to five for current patients, a requirement that has been retained.

RE: CBD Oils for Foot and Ankle Pain (Elliot Udell, DPM)
From: Ira Kraus, DPM
I have been using CBD oils to treat my patients as well as my family members. There are a lot of companies out there, so I did some research on the many different companies in the market place. I ended up using Hilltop Med because I liked the educational material that they supplied. The biggest issue that I have seen is that there are many companies trying to entice doctors to buy these types of products for them to sell to their patients but do not provide educational material and or training for either the doctor or their patients and Hilltop’s focus besides quality products is patient and physician education. I personally tried the sleep solution and the pain cream and was very pleased with my experience. With all the opioid issues that have arisen, this is a good alternative for our patients.
Disclosure: I am President of Talar Medical.

During my rotation at the Gouverneur clinic as a resident, Allen was an attending of mine. He was always informative and offered a kind word. The one fault was that he talked so damned fast (LOL). Rest in Peace and my best to his family.
