PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
Diabetices Need to Show Their Feet Some Love: FL Podiatrist
"The feet are what keep people independent," said Dr. Grace Torres-Hodges, a podiatrist practicing in Pensacola. She says about half of her patients are people living with diabetes. Those are people who need to pay extra attention to their feet. "Diabetes has such a devastating effect (on the feet), resulting in people with neuropathy, which is a loss of sensation in their feet." She says people with this loss of sensation cannot feel if they have an injury to their feet, and that can cause major problems, from infections all the way to amputations.
|
Dr. Grace Torres-Hodges |
This is because having diabetes not only affects the feeling in a patient’s feet, it also means they have poor circulation and a weakened immune system. Dr. Torres-Hodges says if you have diabetes, you should show your feet some love. "Diabetics just need to check their feet regularly."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Five Hiring Tips for Medical Practice Managers- Part 4
• Ease in. Before you commit to a full-time hire, and the benefits that go along with that, try using a probationary period to observe and evaluate performance, work habits, and conduct. Ninety days is standard. During that time, your practice and the prospective employee may terminate employment immediately, with or without cause. If you're still not sold when the three months end, don't be afraid to extend the probationary period, says Bo Snyder, a practice management consultant in Kalamazoo. This is your last, best chance to get it right. "Just say, 'Let's make sure and give this a little longer,'" says Snyder.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
Dr. Deutsch for emperor! The ONLY way to get the attention of insurers is 100% participation in non-participation. The insurers could not possibly care less if a group, even a majority, of docs decide to take a day off, or a week, or a month. There will ALWAYS be other docs who will call the insurers and tell them "Hey, I'll take the money." I spent the first few years in practice not accepting assignment, until I realized that I was a party of one, pissing in the wind. I practiced in MA where virtually everyone has some kind of insurance, so if you don't participate, you don't eat.
Getting all of any group of doctors to agree on an action, even in their best interest, is the proverbial herding cats. Ain't gonna happen. I applaud those few of us who have figured out how to make a living while not participating with insurance companies, but you are few and far between, and you live in states with more liberal practice environments than here. Me? I closed my offices at the end of September, am moving to Costa Rica on December 1st, and opening a soft ice cream stand. First cone is on me to any DPM visiting San Isidro de El General.
