Goldfarb Foundation’s First Virtual Clinical Conference a Success
The pandemic changed everything this year, including the best way to educate the young as well as how to conduct continuing medical education for podiatric physicians. The live-stream conference held November 5-8, connected over 400 doctors from PA and across the country, from first-time doctors in attendance to those who never miss it, and everyone in between.
|
|
Front row (L-R): Drs. Christopher Hood, Jr. and Matthew Rementer. Back row (L-R): Drs. Jeffrey Dunkerley, David Yeager, and Paul Bishop. |
The Conference provides a mix of surgical and non-surgical lectures, including breakthrough information in podiatric medicine and updates, all with the ability to watch lectures from the comfort of home or office while attaining credits. The format included a platform to ask instructors questions and receive answers in real time. The 49th Annual Clinical Conference is scheduled for November 4-7, 2021 at the Valley Forge Casino Resort.

IA Podiatrist Forfeits License for Opioid Prescriptions
A former Cedar Rapids and Anamosa podiatrist pleaded guilty and was sentenced last week to probation and several months of home confinement for prescribing painkillers to employees and neighbors who didn’t need them and then keeping half or all of the pills for himself. Steven Walter Beevers pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court to one count of acquiring a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, deception, or subterfuge. He also must forfeit his Iowa Board of Podiatry license as part of the plea agreement.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Reducing Medical Practice Embezzlement Risk with Cash Controls - Part 3
Front-desk embezzlement schemes are not uncommon and they are typically the result of loose protocols and lack of oversight. Reduce your financial risk by tightening cash controls using these proven practices.
3. Lock it up.
-
We were stunned to spot an unlocked strong box on the front desk of a small internal medicine group, from which staff and doctors regularly withdrew money for everything from the physicians' lunches to a box of copy paper.
-
No lock, no protocol for who could withdraw money, and no paper trail of what was taken out.
-
The timid manager simply put more money in when the balance was low.
-
Be smart: Keep all money in a locked drawer (or overnight safe) and establish guidelines for who has access and what the money should be used for.

From: Timothy Vogler, DPM,
My congratulations to SC podiatric foot and ankle surgeons. Having been involved with our own expansion in 1995 (North Carolina), I know just how difficult this process is. Our profession must never rest in this regard. To my knowledge, we are the ONLY medical profession which has its legal scope of practice limited (when completing residency) to less than our residency training. We must continue to strive for increased LICENSURE that is commensurate with our training.

From: Lance Malusky, DPM
My podiatry school experience was somewhat negative. All in all, a great career maker, though. I was in the class of 1974 at OCPM. My colleagues will recall the mini-building on Cornell in Cleveland. Long and narrow, you could walk the entire front wall in less than a minute, yet it held 400+ students and staff! The late John McCord, DPM was in my class, and our "documentarian." His iconic drawing of the faculty-student relationship was a cassette recorder set on an elementary style school desk pointed at a suspended TV screen.
Recording lectures was the only way to catch Dr. Benjo's lists in diagnostic medicine, every item of which would show up on his tests. My school's didactic experience was filled with C&C clinics, where the greatest challenge was applying a...
