AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Hosts Dog Therapy Session for Class of 2026

On Wednesday, November 1, the Student Wellness Committee at New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) hosted their first dog therapy session for the Class of 2026. In collaboration with Paul Langer from the Good Dog Foundation, his American Bulldog named "Baby Girl" helped brighten the atmosphere and bring smiles to everyone who attended. Baby Girl (who had the sweetest temperament), brought a lot of happiness and good pats to our students. It was a paws-itively uplifting time.

The experience brought an even greater demand for future dog therapies, so everyone will be looking forward to further visits from Baby Girl and other dogs! Sebastian Sukdeo and Emily Royston, Class of 2026, the student reps for the Student Wellness Committee, assisted in running this event!

PODIATRISTS AND THE MILITARY
Military Experiences Inspired ID Podiatrist's Career Choice

Braden Jenkins, DPM served as a member of the Idaho Army National Guard. These experiences had a profound impact on Jenkins, inspiring him to pursue a career as a podiatrist. While working to complete his education, Jenkins and his unit were deployed to Iraq in 2010 as part of Operation New Dawn. During his time there, he noticed that many of his fellow soldiers were still dealing with various foot issues, such as ankle injuries from unsupportive boots, ingrown toenails, calluses, and more.

Dr. Braden Jenkins

Dr. Jenkins completed his podiatric residency at Intermountain Medical Center and the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center, where he gained valuable experience in treating fellow veterans with foot problems related to their military service. He continues to treat veterans through his private practice - The Ridge Foot and Ankle Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho and continues to work closely with the Salt Lake City VA to provide optimal foot and ankle services to local veterans.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Ridgecrest Chamber of Commerce Hosts CA Podiatry Practice

The Ridgecrest Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of another new business in Ridgecrest during a ribbon cutting ceremony for Sienna Podiatry. On Monday afternoon, Holly Spohn-Gross, DPM and other staff members greeted Chamber ambassadors, city dignitaries, and other members of the community and offered a guided tour of the practice.

IN THE COURTS
Tennessee’s Racial Podiatry Rule

The Supreme Court’s ruling this summer in Students for Fair Admissions ended racial preferences among college applicants, but the task of extending that legal precedent for color blindness is only beginning. Medicine might be one field to watch next, since it’s a place where the use of racial selection criteria persists under state mandates. On Wednesday, a group called Do No Harm, which says it’s “dedicated to eliminating racial discrimination in healthcare,” plans to file a federal lawsuit challenging Tennessee’s rules for appointments to more than 70 state boards, according to the draft complaint.

That includes the Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners, created in 1931, whose six members are chosen by the Governor to regulate podiatry practice. Two seats on the podiatry board recently became open. When filling those seats, state law says Republican Gov. Bill Lee must “strive to ensure” that “at least one (1) person serving on the board is a member of a racial minority.” According to the lawsuit, one of the current podiatry openings “is held by the only individual who satisfies the racial mandates,” meaning Mr. Lee is now supposed to use a racial test as he considers candidates.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Nike Faces Backlash for Claiming Baby Trainers 'Help Promote Natural Foot Development'

Nike has faced a backlash from experts for selling “unnecessary” £45 trainers that, they claim, help infants learn to walk. The sports giant says its Swoosh 1 shoes can “help support our earliest walkers as they take their first baby steps”. They add that the trainer is “the first Nike kids shoe ever to receive the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance, a mark signaling how the shoe can help promote natural foot development”.

Robert Payne and Nike Swoosh 1

Rob Payne, a leading podiatrist who has worked with Olympic athletes said, "the necessity of wearing trainers is questionable" for babies. He told The Daily Telegraph, “Walking barefoot or in socks offers the advantage of enhancing a baby’s proprioception and refining their gait. Introducing firm-soled trainers at this early stage may hinder proprioception due to the increased rigidity of the shoe, potentially affecting balance.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Ways to Retain Great Physicians

Healthcare organizations invest significant time, energy, and money into hiring physicians. But according to Douglas Farrago, MD, the author of The Hospital Guide to Physician Retention, very few  invest adequate resources into keeping physicians. Here are some steps to take.

1. Assess physician satisfaction

According to Dr. Farrago, most organizations fail to accurately assess physician well-being in the workplace. “Using physician retention rates is difficult because most companies don’t actually want to know the number,” he says, noting that he worked at an organization that claimed to have very high physician retention, which was contrary to his direct observation. “The center had 80 doctors come and go just in the year that I was there.” Further, relying on exit interviews to determine why physicians are leaving is challenging, as doctors may be hesitant to ‘burn bridges.’

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Pre-operative Consultations

We have had some discussion lately regarding if and when billing for a pre-operative appointment is appropriate. This is an example of a scenario that we are considering. A patient initially presents with a pathology, is evaluated, x-rays are taken, and surgical care is discussed. The patient schedules surgery and an appointment to return to the office.

They are seen in the office prior to the surgery as a pre-operative consultation and an opportunity to sign a consent. At that consultation, there is a discussion once again that involves review of x-rays, the procedure and its risks, along with signing of consent. Is it okay to bill an office visit at that appointment?

John Dahdah, DPM, Pottstown, PA

Response: From your narrative, it appears that the decision was made to proceed with the surgery on the initial office visit. Since that determination has already been made, unless you are making decisions regarding this patient (e.g. new information and separately identifiable problem), the visit immediately prior to surgery is not separately chargeable. Why? Because there’s an inherent pre- and post-op global period built into the surgical CPT.

To sum up, simply seeing the patient to review the logistics of their surgical date, consent signing, etc. all sounds inherent to the pre-operative evaluation/management. This is not separately payable.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE NEWS)
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

I am so happy to finally see the anger and rage about this. My question is why now? It’s like the dog who is chained to a fence. If you remove one link a day, the dog doesn’t realize he is becoming more and more limited every day until he can’t breathe. Unionizing will give doctors a voice. But will it really make a difference? They’ll just throw you a bone to keep you quiet. There are thousands of us out there who quit Medicare, quit insurance-dependency and are thriving. I’ve enjoyed the past 23 years as a direct-pay podiatrist, and no one can lower my fees but me. No one can deny my claims.

No one can delay my claims. Deductibles, co-pays, non-covered services, and meager payments are non-existent. I get paid for my services AT THE TIME OF THE VISIT. My overhead went from 70% of gross down to 20% of gross. It can be done. You just have to know how to create unique value for your services. You can make an amazing living on 8-10 patients a day. That’s called working smart, not hard. Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. So you either do something different or accept the same result.

Robert Kornfeld, DPM, NY, NY
