PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
"Cold Feet: Can be Due to Neuropathy: NY Podiatrist

Q: I’ve been plagued for several years by a progressively worsening case of cold feet that really bothers me at night. I’ve been checked for poor circulation in the extremities, but that’s not the problem.
Dr. Howard Fox

Dr. Howard Fox says, “It sounds like this patient has some sort of neuropathy that’s causing him to perceive a ‘cold’ sensation in his feet. I wonder if his feet were actually cold to touch or only that he perceives them as cold.” Fox says poor circulation shows up as pain, not coldness. The pain intensifies when you are walking and eases when you rest. “Regardless of the cause, the success in treating a neuropathy hinges on diagnosing and treating the underlying condition, not just prescribing medication to treat peripheral neuropathy,” says Fox.

Ankle & Foot Care Centers announced that its September golf benefit raised $14,500 for two organizations that provide diabetes education and resources. Dr. Michelle Anania, partner at Ankle & Foot Cares Austintown and organizer of the event, recently presented a check for $12,000 to the Diabetes Partnership of the Mahoning Valley. Another $2,500 was donated to the American Diabetes Association Northeast Ohio Office.

Dr. Michelle Anania

“These funds help us make a meaningful impact in the lives of local people with diabetes,” Dr. Anania said. “We appreciate all of those who contributed to the golf benefit, including the staff who volunteered their time to make it a success.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Five Hiring Tips for Medical Practice Managers- Part 2

Trust but verify. It takes 10 minutes, but can yield so much. A quick call to your top candidates' references provides valuable insight on their strengths and weaknesses. You might find out they exaggerated their employment history, lied about their degree, or were fired for harassing co-workers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLL)
From: Eric Trattner, DPM

A strike traditionally is a stoppage of labor, essentially holding hostage an industry in the hopes of receiving better terms. The power of a strike is both in the scope of participation as well as the uncertainty of its length. The longer a strike goes on, the more deeply will the loss of service be felt, especially with 100% participation.

In a proposed one-day physician strike, I question first the level of participation, mostly due to the fact that there is no union, and therefore no "bosses" to come down on the "scabs" who do not strike. But mostly, there is no real threat. No one actually believes essential medical care would ever be withheld from sick or injured patients. Nor should it ever! However, even in a scenario where all elective care IS withheld for 24 hours, for what purpose? There is no one in any position of authority with whom to bargain, and even if there were, we would be striking from a position of weakness. "Don't worry, tomorrow we'll be back on the job."

While a one-day strike may attract some attention to "our plight", I doubt it would garner any sympathy, let alone any positive results. The fact is we have very little power as individuals and, as I've seen over the past 25 years, it appears neither do our professional organizations. The only ones with any true negotiating power are the large groups and hospitals. Sure, we can threaten to drop out of insurance plans, but that goes right back to the issue of participation. The other 3 or 10 podiatrists on my block will still accept all insurance plans.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Hugh Gorey, DPM

Seriously, Dr. Kass? A full room of podiatrists and not ONE simply told the drug rep that they would pay for the meal for the hard-working resident? I vote ridiculous.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR)
From: David J. Freedman, DPM

Meaningful Use Audits have to be won! With professionals like Dr. Michael Brody as your expert and PICA's ADC coverage in your back pocket, it makes you rest a little easier that you have a great chance to pass an audit. As long as you have all the documentation that is requested by the auditors and have an expert like Michael (who has dealt with Figliozzi numerous times, it makes this process so much easier. The only other advice is check your spam email to make sure that Figliozzi's email does not go there. You are responsible for the audit timeline even if it goes to spam email.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Harry Confer, DPM
From: John Visser, DPM

It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Harry. I knew Harry since our fraternity days at OCPM. He was the first junior to be elected president of Alpha Gamma Kappa in 1977. This was a very distinct honor at this time. He was elected because of his zeal and boundless energy to provide educational opportunities for the students. He did his residency at the Youngstown Foot Clinic where he was chief resident.

He then practiced his entire near-40 year career in California where he was highly respected for his skills and integrity as a podiatric physician and surgeon. He was supported by his wonderful wife Donna and his two sons. Harry would always go the extra mile. He would help anyone who needed assistance or advice. Although he has passed from this earth, his achievements and memory will never be forgotten. He was a rare talent and our profession will miss him.
