MA Podiatrist Elected Chair of MA Board of Podiatry
At the November meeting of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Podiatry, Raymond S. Murano, DPM was elected Chairman of the Board. Dr. Murano is currently the Chief of Podiatric Surgery for the Tufts Medicine Melrose Wakefield Hospital.

Dr. Murano is on the adjunct clinical faculty at Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine and is a clinical instructor for the Cambridge Hospital Podiatry Residency Program and the Metro-West Podiatry Residency Program. He was instrumental in helping pass board regulations to allow podiatrists to perform ankle surgery.

Nolaska Souliotis, DPM and Ana Urukalo, DPM recently opened Elite Podiatry in Briarcliff, TX. Dr. Souliotis earned her podiatric medical degree from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine and completed her residency at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago. She is board certified in foot surgery, by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

For the past 14 years, Progressive Foot Care have collected over 15,000 pairs of footwear to benefit the less fortunate. They are partnering with The United Way of Rockland, and Catholic Charities of Rockland, as well as Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill, NY.

AAPPM Returns to Lago Mar Resort in Sunny Ft. Lauderdale
The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) concluded its Annual Fall Conference this weekend. For the first time in several years, the AAPPM returned to sunny, warm, beautiful atmosphere at Lago Mar Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While the attendees enjoyed the sun, food, beach, pools, accommodating staff, and all the other amenities at the resort, the AAPPM proudly provided an agenda packed with timely and relevant education topics to help the attendees manage their practices. Over 200 attendees were on hand for the 2022 Fall Conference

“This conference was classic AAPPM. We returned to our favorite location, provided speakers and topics that our members wanted to learn about, and brought back breakout sessions that help our attendees exchange ideas and solutions with each other,” noted AAPPM Conference Chairman Andrew Schneider, DPM. “The result were sessions full of energized and engaging discussions.” The AAPPM will return to Lago Mar Resort again next year for its Annual Fall Conference. The 2023 AAPPM Fall Conference will take place November 2-4, 2023.

First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Fusion Has Excellent Outcomes
Between August 2016 and May 2021, 756 patients underwent a first MTP joint fusion at the Cleveland Clinic. Of these, Georgeanne Botek, DPM, and Sara Lyn Miniaci-Coxhead, MD reviewed 406 (54%) patients who had a complete dataset (baseline PROMs, surgeon data and one-year PROMs). Our patient cohort included 317 women (78%), with an average age of 65 (age range: 54-71). Indications for surgery included hallux rigidus (N = 117), hallux valgus (N = 135), arthritic bunion (N = 116), hallux varus (N = 19) and other (N = 19).
In conclusion, first MTP joint fusion is a reliable procedure that produces favorable outcomes in patients with various first MTP ailments. Our prospectively collected data have demonstrated that the surgery is successful across multiple locations, surgeons, and diagnoses. Although implants for arthroplasty of the first MTP joint now are available, outcomes of first MTP fusion consistently are superior.

Now, look at how you can incorporate the best of an in-person visit into a telehealth visit. Your competition is telewealth - which has convenience on its side – so make it personal. RE: Ageism

I had the good fortune of practicing in the same general area as Dr. James Ganley. Whether professional or social, I would hang on every word, thought, or point that he made. I greatly respected the experience of his years. I am not sure that today's young podiatrists and others hold older practitioners in the same esteem.
Last week, I was bounced from a Medscape survey on gout as soon as I entered that I have been in practice 41 years. Recently, I have noted that either my age (70) or my years in practice (41), will get my opinions banished quickly. I asked Medscape for an explanation, I explained my education, training, experience, teaching credentials, and my board certification. I accused them of ageism. They said simply, “Unfortunately, based on responses to the screening portion, our client has deemed participation ineligible.”
I don't know if Medscape's policies represent a trend, but I am amazed that the opinions of older and wiser practitioners are held in such little esteem. My wife thinks I am overreacting to this, but I find it disconcerting that my age and years in practice immediately disqualify me from a poll or a survey. I would think the opposite would be true. Comments?

Years ago, I changed my approach on going barefoot at home after having to remove a bucket full of foreign bodies. Toothpicks, needles, thumb tacks, nails, a small knitting needle, and even (in a diabetic) a Matchbox car!
