PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
VA Podiatrist Promotes 1st Annual “Selfie Footie” Campaign

"The number one complication of diabetes is foot problems. Infections and ulcerations of the feet can lead to diabetes," says podiatrist Dr. Mitchell Waskin.

Dr. Mitchell Waskin

"We recommend an annual comprehensive diabetic foot exam. This year, we are also promotiong what we call a 'selfie footie' campaign. All you have to do is take a picture of your foot with a funny sock or an image on it. Just post it on our website. For each one posted, we will make a donation to the American Diabetes Association," says Waskin.

On the 77th anniversary of Kristallnacht (broken glass), Dr. Aliza Erber has written and stars in a play entitled The Holocaust Syndrome. This moving and autobiograhical story chronicles the life of a young Dutch girl torn from the arms of her mother and saved from the Nazis. It shows the emotional and psychological damage that affects the children of Holocaust survivors.

Dr. Erber, a graduate of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, is now a rabbinic pastor, an actor, playwright, and an adjunct professor at SUNY- Purchase college.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
Wearable Devices May Prevent Falls Among Elderly Patients

Wearable fitness tools manufacturer Sensoria Inc. has partnered with Orthotics Holdings, Inc. in order to create an Internet of Things wearable orthotics sensor. The Smart Moore Balance Brace is capable of helping elderly patients prevent falls and maintain stability. Healthcare providers can use these wearable devices to monitor patients remotely including their gait consistencies and physical activity levels.

Smart Moore Balance Brace

There are sensors installed into these devices as well as an Internet-connected anklet to connect to the Smart Moore Balance Brace. The anklet is then linked up to a mobile health application, which accesses data about the patient’s movement and gait. Both doctors and patients can track the results from these Internet-connected sensors. These wearable devices are still taking part in clinical studies but are expected to be available in 2016.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Five Hiring Tips for Medical Practice Managers- Part 1

Your new billing clerk looked great on paper. She had all the right credentials, interviewed well, and appeared eager to hit the ground running. Three weeks after you brought her aboard, however, it was painfully clear she was in over her head. Office managers and administrators often fill vacant positions with new recruits who don't measure up. As a result, they expose their practice to legal risks when they let those workers go. "Most people inflate their resumes," says Keith Borglum, a medical practice consultant with Professional Management & Marketing in Santa Rosa, Calif. "Everybody has skills and weaknesses. That's part of the risk of being a business owner and the burden of being an employer."

By using proper hiring and firing techniques, however, you can find the right candidates the first time around, lower costly turnover, and insulate your practice from the majority of frivolous claims. 1) Test run. Before offering any applicant the job, says Borglum, test for the skills you seek. That may include software literacy, diagnostic or procedural codes, math or spelling, or people skills. "If that person is going to be independently performing reviews of a staff member, have them role play a review, or ask them how they'd handle certain situations," says Borglum. You can create your own informal tests, or pay for online assessment tools such as totaltesting.com.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Compliance or Ridiculous?
From: Jeff Kass, DPM

This past week, I attended a monthly podiatry division meeting at a restaurant given by a drug company. A lecture was given and food was served. A podiatry resident entered the room after the lecture had ended and had ordered a meal. As he was about to start eating, a woman rushed to his table and started "yelling" at him that he couldn't eat the meal.

She started ranting how he came late after the lecture and that because of this, he wasn't allowed to eat the meal. The resident was polite and was trying to explain how he was in a case and came to the restaurant immediately following and had just arrived. The woman wasn't interested and continued to inform him he was not allowed to...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR)
From: Michael L. Brody, DPM

The Meaningful Use audit process has been in place for many years. Over the years, there have been a number of different types of audits. The most common Meaningful Use audit is a single year ‘desk audit’ that has been conducted by Figliozzi and Company.

The audits by Figliozzi are for proof that you have met each and every measure of Meaningful Use for a single attestation period (Usually one year but sometimes 90 days or a calendar quarter). In addition, there have been limited audits conducted directly by CMS that have only looked at proof that you had access to...
