FL Podiatrist Interviews NFL Eagle's Great at TUSPM
Temple University's School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) hosted a panel discussion Thursday night with Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Famer William “Tra” Thomas and Gideon Lewis, DPM, a sports medicine foot and ankle surgeon. The pair shared career advice and answered questions from the crowd. Dr. Lewis opened the event with a speech detailing his career in sports medicine. He engaged with the audience, made up mostly of sports medicine students, encouraging them to view medicine as a business.

Miranda Royds, the event’s moderator and a second-year podiatric medical student at the School of Podiatric Medicine, then asked Thomas questions about his career as a football player and, later, football coach. Thomas shared how he worked to prevent injuries among his players and stories of his own injuries during his football career. Thomas, who played in the Eagles’ 2004 Super Bowl, remarked on the personal accomplishment it was for him to play in the championship.

DC Podiatrist Comments on Physicians’ Social Media Behavior
Medscape’s Physician Behavior Report 2023 revealed that doctors have seen their share of unprofessional or offensive social media use from their peers. Nearly 7 in 10 said it is unethical for a doctor to act rudely, offensively, or unprofessionally on social media, even if their medical practice isn’t mentioned. As one physician put it: “Professional is not a 9-to-5 descriptor.”

UK Podiatrist Receives Gold Medal Award
A retired podiatrist from Wick said it was "humbling" to receive a national award recognizing her achievements in the profession. Sandra Jones was presented with the Royal College of Podiatry's Gold Medal Award at a ceremony in the House of Lords.

It came half a century after she began her training. Sandra retired in May 2022 as NHS Highland podiatry diabetes coordinator. The award, which takes the form of a crystal trophy, is granted to an individual podiatrist "who has demonstrated excellence throughout their professional career" and given "outstanding service" over a sustained period.

But what makes concrete so different from other surfaces? “Walking on concrete, especially if you are doing it everyday at work, leads to a large amount of increased pressure on the feet,” says Timothy Oldani, DPM, a podiatrist at Missouri Foot and Ankle.

“Concrete is an unforgiving surface that, because of its rigidity, can cause pain, especially to the highly sensitive areas of the heel and across the ball of the foot. This can lead to foot pain issues and conditions like plantar fasciitis. It can also cause knee, hip, and back pain in the long-term," says Dr. Oldani.

Although no physician can manage all the possible risks that lead to malpractice lawsuits, best practices include making sure you have the best insurance policy, working on patient-communication strategies, and following the right steps if a lawsuit is filed. Steps to take after a lawsuit is filed. - Physicians will need clear thinking in the instance of a claim or a lawsuit, Peter Kolbert, senior vice president for claims and litigation management for Healthcare Risk Advisors said. "When physicians get sued, it's a new universe and they don't fully understand it," he added. "Often the cases that end up getting filed are not necessarily the ones physicians would expect, so they may take a physician by surprise," Christopher Ryan, counsel and co-chair of the healthcare litigation task force at Dickinson Wright in Ann Arbor, Michigan. said.
Tom Benvenuto, a senior trial attorney with Benvenuto & Slattery in Roslyn, New York said it's normal for a physician to want to go back in and change the note, but it's a very bad idea. "The first thing you must do is resist the urge to add anything to the note. I don't even mean falsifying it, but just adding information that you didn't put in the first place. Those always get you bitten."

Query: Consultation Coding
I have a question regarding coding for a patient who has straight Medicare and a co-insurance. When, if ever, is it appropriate or is it payable to bill for a consultation code such as CPT 99243 or CPT 99244?

Response: Medicare will not pay for the consultation codes. And if Medicare doesn’t pay, generally neither will the secondary. You will need to use office codes, or if you see patients in the hospital, use the hospital visit codes.
