SMU Receives $10 Million Gift to Fund Podiatric Medicine Program
Samuel Merritt University (SMU) has received a $10 million gift from the estate of esteemed alumnus and podiatrist Russell Odell Lewis, DPM ’65 to fund endowed scholarships for SMU’s Doctor of Podiatric Medicine students as well as students in the College of Nursing. It is the largest gift in the University’s history, and it comes at a time when Northern California is facing a massive healthcare workforce shortage over the next 10 years.
|
|
Dr. Russell Lewis |
The transformational gift from Dr. and Mrs. Lewis will provide significant scholarship opportunities for all students, particularly students of color and first-generation college students. The Lewis' gift will also provide critical resources to increase enrollment at Samuel Merritt University, as SMU works to address the workforce development needs of Northern California.

VA Podiatrist Interviews Runner Circumnavigating the World
Ben Pearl, DPM recently interviewed Tomasz Drybala, a runner attempting to run the distance of the equator. This distance should take three years to run. He is bringing awareness to mental health and several charities including Unicef in his journey. He never ran formally. He started running to help with his own anxiety. The following is a video clip from the interview.

CMS Finalizes 4.5% Physician Pay Cut
Medicare's physician fee schedule final rule, released Nov. 1, will reduce the physician pay conversion factor by 4.48 percent to $33.06. The conversion factor used to calculate physician reimbursement will decline by $1.55 in 2023. With the 4 percent statutory Pay-As-You-Go sequester, which was implemented to offset congressional spending outside of healthcare, physicians are looking at an 8.5 percent pay cut.
CMS said the conversion factor accounts for the expiration of the 3 percent supplemental increase in physician fee schedule payments for 2022, as required by the Protecting Medicare and American Farmers From Sequester Cuts Act, and the budget neutrality adjustment for changes in relative value units.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Six Steps to Ensure Your Future Practice Success
Your success or lack thereof will rest upon patient loyalty. Here are six steps to take:
2) Engage a company such as rater8 or Birdseye to increase your online reviews. A large number of positive online reviews accompanied by personal attestations will draw new patients.
Here’s an example from my former practice of 30+ providers. Over fifteen months, we had 135 reviews with 102 comments and an average score of 4.0. We then retained rater8 and hit gold. Over the first four months, we had 2,868 reviews with 800 comments and an average score of 4.8. The average score went up because rater8 made it easy for happy patients to post comments and ratings, whereas before unhappy patients were more likely to go online and rate us. Not coincidentally, new patient demand increased significantly.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM, Sherwin Tucker, DPM
This is uncommon in children but I have treated it quite a few times. In my experience, there is an adrenal/neurotransmitter mechanism every time. Get a diurnal cortisol evaluation and a neurotransmitter assay. Topical treatment for these kids usually does not control it. Managing the underlying mechanism does.
Robert Kornfeld, DPM, NY, NY
Smelly feet and excessive sweating may be more than a localized problem. Does this patient have any other medical issues? Have you consulted his pediatrician? Do you have any labs on this patient? Have you ruled out pediatric hyperthyroidism?
Sherwin Tucker, DPM, Hartford, CT

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS JURY VERDICT REPORTER) | |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
The issues raised on whether an expert witness is lying or telling the truth is making an area of our jurisprudence system seem too "cut and dry." The issue is often far more complex. A physician may be sued for negligence if it can be proved that he or she harmed a patient by practicing out of the norm in a particular community or profession. Here is the problem: Most of the attorneys on either side, are not doctors. In order to prove their case, they have to bring in a doctor from that specialty and prove via cross examination, show that the doctor being sued was not practicing in the same way as his or her colleagues, and this resulted in harm.
The problem is that many doctors do not practice "evidence-based medicine" but from personal opinion. Example: Many years ago at a board meeting of the American Society of Podiatric Medicine, we polled the attendees who were all in academia about what constitutes a diabetic foot exam. There were no two opinions that were the same. Each esteemed doctor had a strong unwavering opinion. Had each been testifying on that topic in court, you would get two different stories but neither would be a lie. Unfortunately, in many cases, these opinions and not evidence are what can sway a jury.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

I too was saddened to hear about the passing of one of my classmates. Along with Joe Boylan, DPM, I too met Dr. Ross as a freshman at NYCPM in 1983. She was a kind, gentle person throughout the school years. My sincere condolences to her family and colleagues. Life really is short and precious. Hug those you love every day.
