PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS |
NE Podiatrist Wins Legislative Seat
The Nebraska Legislature looks to be more conservative during the next two years. In District 4, Dr.Robert Hilkemann, a retired podiatrist, won against Stacy Ryan, who describes herself as a judicial reform activist. Spending in the race, which pitted two Republicans against each other, reached almost $200,000.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
IL Podiatrist Comments on Chicago Bulls' Player Injury
Derrick Rose is no stranger to injury, and neither are his fans in Chicago. But despite Rose and Coach Thibodeau reassuring the media and fans that his recent ankle sprains during the Chicago Bulls’ home opener last weekend was “not that serious,” Rose hasn’t stepped on the court since. And one Chicago podiatrist doesn’t expect to see him very much, if at all, this week as the Bulls face off against four teams in five nights.
|
Dr. Jeffrey Baker |
Jeffrey R. Baker, DPM, a podiatrist at the Weil Foot & Ankle Institute in Chicago specializing in foot and ankle trauma and podiatric sports medicine, points out that his recent knee injuries are probably delaying his ankle recovery. “With typical ankle sprains, you might see an athlete rebound within a week. But this is different because he has injured both ankles and likely will be unable to compensate with either of his knees just yet. It complicates this injury.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
Podiatrist Trades the Warmth of FL for the Boom of ND
Indications that the boom in Williston, North Dakota is likely to be long-term are increasing: New restaurants are springing up, along with apartment buildings and a brand-new recreational center. The private equity firm of KKR and Company has announced plans to spend up to $150 million to develop a 164-acre residential community. Professionals are pouring into the city as well: doctors at the quickly-growing local hospital, engineers working for the oil companies, and the inevitable lawyers.

Dr. Guy Slann |
A podiatrist from Florida, Dr. Guy Slann, moved to Williston last summer and plans to relocate his family there permanently once his children finish high school. He said, “It’s underserved and has a booming economy. How many places are there like that? Florida will be just fine without another podiatrist.”

OUTSIDE INTERESTS |
UT Podiatrist Raises, Then Releases Pheasants Into the Wild
On the brown, brushy landscape of the Utah Lake Wetland Preserve, about 70 miles south of Salt Lake City, the Clark family lets out whoops of joy watching the birds race away. The process repeats five times, until each box of Chinese ring-necked pheasants has been emptied. “That was awesome,” a grinning Dr. Scott Clark said, looking skyward. “This is the payoff. It’s like setting fireworks and then watching them go off.”
|
Dr. Scott Clark |
“I thought it would be neat for my kids to see the whole cycle of life,” said Clark, a podiatrist, who consumes the meat from animals he has hunted. He said he believed that conservation efforts played a central role in ethical hunting. “I’ve always tried to give back,” he added. The Clark family raised just over 40 birds, which were housed in a 45-foot-by-8-foot wood-and-chicken-wire coop built next to their garage.

HEALTHCARE NEWS |
Republicans Take Senate, Will Take on ACA Again
In a midterm election with many implications for healthcare, Republicans pulled off their expected takeover of the Senate, which they hope will enable them to rewrite the Affordable Care Act (ACA), even if they can't repeal it outright. Republicans already were in control of the House before today, and they gained even more seats. But even though Republicans will rule the Senate as well as the House, their legislative agenda will run up against not only the veto power of President Barack Obama, but also having enough Senate votes, as projected, for Democrats to play filibuster.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (JURY VERDICT REPORTER) |
From: Ira Baum, DPM
If the doctor has malpractice insurance of $250K per incident and the verdict is $775K, is he responsible for the balance of $525K? If the doctor is responsible for the balance, it seems challenging to understand why a podiatrist would defend him- or herself. The doctor obviously believed he did not perform negligently or he wouldn’t have fought the charges; he would have settled (unless the plaintiff wouldn’t settle). He lost the case and lost income from his office, incurred office expenses while defending himself and the balance of the verdict. If he would have won the case, what would have been the results? He would have vindicated himself and still lost the income and expenses being out of his office defending himself, which can take two weeks or longer. In other words, it doesn’t appear he could have won either way. He just took the more expensive route. Something's wrong here.
Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. If the defendant only had 250K per incident coverage, the doctor would be personally liable for the rest. That's why most practice management experts recommend having 1 million/3 million coverage. The cost difference is not significant, and you will be able to sleep better.
