TX Podiatrist Installed as TPMA President
Recently, Neil Campbell, DPM was installed as the President of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association. The TPMA is one of the largest podiatric state advocacy organizations in the United States and represents over 600 podiatrists throughout Texas. TPMA represents podiatric interests before the state legislature.

Dr. Campbell testified for TPMA before the House and Senate in the last legislative session. The TPMA also helps podiatrists throughout the state with insurance issues and provides educational opportunities for podiatrists through scientific conferences. Dr. Campbell has practiced in DeWitt County for over 22 years and has been employed by Cuero Regional Hospital since 2015.

Dr. Olsen, a graduate from Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University, completed a three-year surgical residency at Baylor Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, TX.

The American Limb Preservation Society, the Canadian Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA), D-Foot International, and Wounds Canada have announced a global collaboration to bring change to the fight for limb preservation. This alliance unites regional, national, and international organizations to fight against unnecessary limb amputations. This alliance combines efforts in education, advocacy, and awareness.

AMA Comments on Medicare Payment Cuts
“The Medicare physician payment schedule released today is an unfortunate continuation of a two-decade march in making Medicare unsustainable for patients and physicians. For 2024, the new rule indicates there will be another downward adjustment of 3.4 percent, on top of the 2 percent payment reduction in 2023. At the same time, the payment schedule confirms the Medicare Economic Index (MEI) increase at 4.6 percent, the highest this century and on top of last year’s 3.8 percent. MEI is the government measure of inflation in medical practice costs. "
“When adjusted for inflation, Medicare physician payment already has effectively declined 26% from 2001 to 2023 before additional inflation and these cuts are factored in."

8 Tips for Medical Malpractice Defense
Although no physician can manage all the possible risks that lead to malpractice lawsuits, best practices include making sure you have the best insurance policy, working on patient-communication strategies, and following the right steps if a lawsuit is filed. Check out these medical malpractice best practices.
5. The importance of documentation - Becoming better listeners can prevent another common problem in malpractice lawsuits-poor documentation in the electronic health record (EHR). "As a lawyer, there are very few times when I've seen perfect documentation, a record that has everything in it that I would hope to see. It's such a big issue, we've given entire presentations on medical record documentation," Christopher Ryan, counsel and co-chair of the healthcare litigation task force at Dickinson Wright in Ann Arbor, Michigan said.
In addition to traditional notes, Peter Kolbert, senior vice president for claims and litigation management for Healthcare Risk Advisors said that physicians should always chart issues of patient non-adherence. In general, most notes in an EHR will be read maybe once or twice, until there's a lawsuit.

For those who provide services in these facilities, know that there is no perfect way to determine 31 or 32 POS. We are depending on staff there to give us accurate information and, like insurance eligibility, it can change for the same date of service, even if you have done your due diligence. OIG has published a letter on this that identifies CMS also does not have a mechanism to adjudicate these claims correctly. So if CMS cannot identify the correct POS during claim adjudication and CMS does not have an online mechanism to check accurately, the burden is being incorrectly placed on us by OIG.
My assumption is that CMS does not want to deal with this mess, and therefore the reason it is coming directly from the OIG. This needs to be fought by all specialists vehemently. When do we as physicians take a stand that enough is enough. Do not let your administrative defense tell you otherwise. And shame on those sitting in their Ivory Towers and not in the trenches, telling you it’s CMS’s right to recoup. The devil is in the details on this particular issue.

I am deeply saddened to convey the passing of Rocco Palermo on November 1, 2023. Dr. Palermo was a graduate of OCPM. He taught many of the students at OCPM and was the physician sponsor for Phi Alpha Pi at the Salvation Army Clinic in Cleveland. Many of the students did rotations at his private office. Doc Roc will be missed.
