AT THE COLLEGES
TUSPM Students Participate at Special Olympics

Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine's (TUSPM) American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) student chapter participated at the Special Olympics Fall Festival over the weekend at Villanova. The students performed foot health screenings on over 100 athletes through the Healthy Athletes Program.

2nd and 3rd year TUSPM students with Dr. Howard Palamarchuk (3rd from top L) and Mr. Jim Dodds (top R)

Second and third year students had the opportunity to work together under the guidance of TUSPM clinician and associate professor, Dr. Howard Palamarchuk and Mr. Jim Dodds, certified pedorthist for Hanger Corporation. The athletes were evaluated for basic foot health, shoe and sock problems, and measured for their proper size. Students were also able to create over 140 heat-molded inserts to ensure that the athletes were ready for a weekend of competition.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS
MI Podiatrist Runs for Third Term as County Commissioner

First District Commissioner Dr. Dan Lathrop will compete against Democratic challenger Betsy Coffia in Tuesday's election. Dr. Lathrop, 70, lives on Old Mission Peninsula. He has worked as a foot and ankle surgeon since 1975 and owns Birch Tree Podiatry. He is married with no children and serving his third term as a Grand Traverse County Commissioner.

Dr. Dan Lathrop

"I want this position because I love helping people and I’ve grown to love my county. I want to be of help and this is a good way to do it. I think because I’ve more than proven my helpfulness to our county in getting us out of debt, (creating a) $2 million surplus and getting us back on track. I think I’ve been a strong fiscal conservative and a reliable commissioner to my constituents.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Convincing Patients to Respond to Surveys is Easier Than You Think - Part 2

You might be surprised to learn that 86 percent of Americans say they would likely take a survey from a healthcare provider, if asked. A West survey of 1,036 adults in the United States showed patients are more open to taking surveys than most providers realize. The following recommendations, based on West’s survey findings, show three key ways healthcare teams can grow response rates by focusing on factors patients say influence their decision to participate in surveys. The following recommendations, based on West’s survey findings, show three key ways healthcare teams can grow response rates by focusing on factors patients say influence their decision to participate in surveys.

2. Connect surveys to health management support. Interest in surveys rises among patients when they understand how surveys will benefit them. More than four in ten patients (42 percent) report they would be more likely to take a survey if they knew how it would help with their treatment. Also, 39 percent of patients with chronic health conditions say they would be more apt to participate in a survey if they felt doing so would enable them and their healthcare team to better monitor their conditions. Taking time to explain to patients why they are being asked to respond to surveys and how their responses will be used can increase survey participation.

QUERIES (EMR)
Query: EMR Recommendations

We are a small practice evaluating our EMR and considering changing to NextGen. We are interested to know if anyone has any feedback on that particular EMR. We are also interested if anyone has any recommendations for other EMR systems that are podiatry-friendly.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: ABPS Maintenance of Certification Lifetime
From: Michael McCormick, DPM

$900 to take a self-assessment exam. What a joke! It’s absolutely ridiculous to waste any of our remaining days on this Earth going to an ultra-secure testing facility, by appointment, with multiple forms of identification, to take a self-assessment test, which no-one but no-one cares if you pass or fail, will likely never be evaluated by anyone, just to be able to state "Board Certified” on your letterhead and keep your hospital privileges.

I get it if passing or failing is important and the data is needed for educational purposes, but for a self-assessment? How about we join the 21st century and do it online for free? We already pay enough for annual dues. Just my two bits. I'm happy this is my last time having to perform this stupid exercise.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY)
From: Joel Lang, DPM

When I was in practice, my staff and I ate lunch (which I provided) together every day. This gave us an opportunity to talk about how things went that morning, and improving office functioning was an ongoing discussion. The motto was "nothing we are doing cannot be changed if there is a better way." When individual discussions were requested, they were scheduled at any time I was free. Salary discussions and performance evaluations were individually scheduled once a year. This worked well and everyone felt comfortable making suggestions. It's also great for staff morale. My staff turnover was minimal.
