PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS |
OH Podiatrist Re-Elected to Congress in Landslide Victory
U.S. Congressman Dr. Brad Wenstrup (R-2nd District) won re-election to a second term at Tuesday’s 2014 General Election, beating Democratic Challenger Marek Tyszkiewicz, 130,479 votes to 66,933 votes. In an interview with the News Watchman, Wenstrup thanked the voters for having the confidence to send him to Congress again. "I think we worked hard, and I’m pleased to see the results,” he said.

Dr. Brad Wenstrup |
While he indicated that Tuesday night was a good one for Republicans, it is not a time to gloat, he said, but to roll up their sleeves and get to work. He said that the economy and jobs will be a major focus of his time in office, and he mentioned that his office has its own director of economic development.

PM JURY VERDICT REPORTER |
Failure to Employ Conservative Methods (NY)
Facts: The plaintiff, who was 16 at the time of the 2008 treatment, contended that the defendant podiatrist acted negligently in performing surgery without first attempting a course of conservative measures and that the surgery was unnecessary and excessive. The plaintiff contended that she presented with a moderate bunion on the great toe of the left foot, a mild hammertoe condition on the other four toes of this foot and some signs of a mild ” tailor's” bunion on the other side of this foot.

Medicare Fees For Podiatrists to Remain Flat
CMS unveiled its final rule for the CY 2015 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) on October 31. According to this final rule, podiatrists are likely to experience on average no change to their total allowed charges, which is consistent with the overall change seen by all specialties. The vast majority of specialties, 47 out of 57, will experience either no increase or a decrease.

Minimal Incision Extraction of Lipomas Underused: Report
Although the minimal incision or "squeeze" technique is an effective and simple way of dealing with lipomas, about a third of surveyed dermatologists have not tried the approach. "Physicians are often slow to adopt new approaches to clinical practice," said Dr. Robert T. Brodell from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. "There are many reasons for this. Often the evidence base for new practices is scant, long-term studies to examine recurrence rate are not available comparing the traditional approach of excising lipomas with this new small-incision approach. Most importantly, physicians, like everyone else, are creatures of habit," he told Reuters Health by email.
"Our group," Dr. Brodell continued, "surveyed Ohio dermatologists about their use of small incisional surgery to remove larger lipomas. While many dermatologists have adopted this technique, much like surgeons remove gall bladders and appendices through small holes, others have not yet even tried the technique." In a research letter online October 22 in JAMA Dermatology, Dr. Brodell and colleagues note that common treatment approaches include elliptical excision, liposuction, and injection lipolysis. However, in most cases, they favor extraction via a small scalpel or punch incision.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Converting to In-House Billing, Auditing For Errors
We are a four-podiatrist group that has always done our billing using outside services. We average around 1,200 patient visits per month total. The communication issue has always been troublesome, although we have usually worked things out.
1) If we were to bring billing in-house, how many billers would we need for the four of us?
2) Do you regularly check or have a way of checking to see if what you are paid for each encounter/visit/procedure is indeed what you are supposed to be getting according to your fee schedule with each insurer? We have found that regular miscalculations are occurring by the insurance companies. We occasionally audit accounts to see if we get what we are due, but regularly find discrepancies. Only if we catch them, can we have the billers go back and appeal or rebill the claim. I’m afraid that we are missing a lot of this. Ideas?
