NJ Podiatrist Saves Foot of Motorcycle Accident Victim
On November 2nd, Blairstown, NJ EMS Chief Stephen Guiliana, DPM responded to a serious motorcycle accident with severe injuries. On scene, Dr. Guiliana identified the injury as a dislocated ankle with a pulseless and cyanotic foot.

After the patient was sedated by medics, Dr. Guiliana performed a successful emergency closed reduction of the ankle at the scene, restoring circulation and saving the limb. The patient was then airlifted to Morristown Medical Center for advanced care and surgery. Dr. Guiliana is Chief Executive Officer and partner of New Jersey Foot & Ankle Institute in Succasunna, NJ.

Senate Moves to Align Podiatry Licensure Under Guam Board of Medical Examiners
Senators placed Bill 56-38 COR, which would move regulation of podiatrists from Guam’s Allied Health Board to the Guam Board of Medical Examiners and adopt related rules and a code of ethics, on the third-reading calendar after floor presentation and committee amendment.
The sponsor said podiatry includes surgical and medical responsibilities that align more closely with the medical-licensing board and that only a small number of podiatrists practice on Guam. Supporters noted diabetes-related foot disease and ulceration as a locally relevant clinical problem that podiatrists help treat and said aligning regulation with the medical board will improve oversight and patient safety.

First, exceed patients' expectations. Customers form perceptions about what they are going to experience from the airline industry, as well as from an accountant, a dentist, and a stockbroker. What are the expectations that our patients are seeking?
I have surveyed my patients, and I know that they expect to be seen within a few minutes of their appointment time. They expect all their phone calls to be returned by me or someone on my staff in a timely manner. They expect me to answer all questions about their medical condition in each doctor-patient encounter. They expect me to have the latest technology, both in the clinical aspect and the business component of my practice.

2. Avoid sales tax in retirement
Unfortunately, there is no surefire way to avoid sales tax. However, there are approaches you can take to minimize the amount of tax you pay.
When you’re a minimalist, you’re typically buying fewer items, which results in paying less sales tax overall. Your goal is to purchase only what you truly need or value. You can prioritize experiences (local museums, town events, or public parks) over those that cost funds, thus essentially avoiding sales tax.

In my opinion, the difference between non-compliant and non-adherent is the tone, perspective, and implications. For example. the definition of each can be as follows:
Non-compliant: The patient does not follow the healthcare provider’s instructions or treatment plan.
Non-adherence: The patient does not stick to the mutually agreed-upon treatment plan.

I absolutely agree with Dr. Barry Block. Publishing obituaries of DPMs in PM News is important for all the reasons cited by Dr. Block. It is also a sign of respect and appreciation for those who are part of our special family and for those who have fought many of the battles on behalf of our profession.

I respectfully disagree with Dr. Robert Gottlieb's characterization of the reporting as an obsession and a regularly reported headline. As a retiree, I find it informative to find out about the passing of colleagues whom otherwise I would not have known about. Occasionally, there is a classmate or someone I trained with or I trained. On a few occasions, I was able to send condolences to the family. Thank you and continue to post these.

Thank you, Dr. Block for printing obituaries sent to you. Unless passings are in the same city, there is little chance of learning that someone we knew in school or residency has passed on. The schools are not in the business of informing alumni of deaths.
It’s a wonderful tradition and a fine service to the profession. We easily lose contact with those podiatrists we swore we would stay in touch with when we graduated. It gives readers an opportunity and excuse to call members of a study group or fraternity to touch base again after all these years. And then we promise to stay in touch again until we read another familiar obituary. Maybe Dr. Gottlieb hasn’t been through many of those Schadenfreude moments. I’m grateful to you for printing the obituaries and the thoughtful podiatrists around the country who are kind enough to take the minute needed to send the notice to PM News.

I’m so glad to see your response to the podiatrist questioning the need to post obituaries in PM News. First of all, I give you credit for taking the high road in your explanation. I’m not sure I’d have that “self-control” if it were me responding!
Our profession is comprised of many who are friends, colleagues, fellow classmates, and residents living around the world. While we may not be in contact with them on a regular basis, it is an appreciated service of PM News to share the passing of our fellow podiatrists so that we might reach out to family and offer our condolences.
While we may be professionals to our community, we are all human beings who deserve recognition of our accomplishments in our lives and our passing at the end of life. I sincerely hope this newsletter continues to do both. Celebrate the accomplishments of our fellow podiatrists and give them a final farewell from all who knew them and cared for them.
