Don't Self-Treat Peeling Skin on Feet: CT Podiatrist
When your "dogs" start barking over the scaly skin situation going on down there, it can be super tempting to take matters into your own hands by, say, picking. Don't, per Jennifer Tauber, DPM, a podiatrist in New Canaan, Connecticut. "The biggest mistake that people make is trying to remove the peeling skin on their own, either by using some type of instrument, which can lead to bleeding and infection, or an over-the-counter remedy that may be too harsh for the skin and cause more irritation than good."
|
|
Dr. Jennifer Tauber |
Instead, Dr. Tauber recommends scheduling an appointment with your doc, especially if it's your first time having any unexplained peeling since it "can happen for different reasons." And the same is true if you start to experience any signs of infection, such as redness, drainage, itchiness, or pain, she adds.

TX Podiatrist’s Practice is Growing... Along With San Antonio
According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau report tracking of the fastest growing cities between 2016 and 2017, San Antonio was number one with the largest population gain during that time period. An average of 66 people per day are moving into the City. Keeping pace with the growth of the City, Walter “Wally” Strash, DPM of Strash Foot and Ankle Care is now adding a location on the north side.

Dr. Walter Strash and staff |
Dr. Strash has been in practice for nearly thirty years and serves as an associate professor at the University of Texas San Antonio Health Science Center’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and is on the board of the Specialty Surgery Center.

Drs. Sam Mendicino and Mark Hofbauer |
Dr. Mark Hofbauer shared that "this unique meeting at the edge of the U.S. coast, offers informal CME with great updates and interaction." Attendees also enjoyed a beach reception, Margaritaville theme breaks, and sunsets right outside the lecture hall. The meeting is a fundraiser for the West Houston and Kingwood Podiatric Residency Programs.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Marketing Steps Your Medical Practice Should Be Taking - Part 4
Marketing is no longer an optional undertaking for physician practices, particularly independent ones. As competition increases and patients take a more active role in practice selection, your viability and growth will increasingly rely on strong marketing initiatives. Relying primarily on referrals from other providers and patients is a losing proposition. Here are the first steps all practices need to take:
4. Make your website easy to be found: Create an SEO optimization and social media plan. This is another area in which professional help is highly valuable. An SEO expert with experience in practice marketing can help tweak your website language so that it is more likely to appear in searches conducted by prospective patients and referrers. Also, up your social media presence, particularly on Facebook, and consider investing in Facebook advertising. The right expert can help you create ads that reflect your value proposition and which are sent out to your target audience. Finally, monitor review websites and appropriately respond to reviews as you receive them.

| CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Denial for Combination of Digital Procedures
We billed for CPT 28124 (T5) and CPT 11730 (T5) out-patient procedures on the same day. Blue Shield denied CPT 11730 (T5). The denial reason was that this procedure is included with payment for another one performed on the same day. Is there any modifier I can add to re-submit?
Kiss Woo, Staff of Wendy Wu, DPM, Monterey Park, CA
Response: The T modifiers separate digits, so T “x” gets billed with T “y”, indicating separate digits are being worked on. You cannot use the same T modifier as you did. So in your case, the -59 modifier is the better option, I suggest CPT 28124 and CPT 11730-59.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Chris Seuferling, DPM, Stephen Musser, DPM
What toes are affected? Are there any photos? You need to make sure it's not a congenital malalignment of great toenails, as this can present with secondary fungal infection, but it is not the primary pathology.
Chris Seuferling, DPM, Portland, OR
Reinforce daily hygiene. Continue the current topical treatment for 6 months and re-evaluate.
Stephen Musser, DPM, Cleveland, OH

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM
Yes, the train has left the station, and I hope for good. Those who think differently just don't get it. Just as we get our schools to move to a complete set of courses, matching those of medical students, the last thing we need is to divide us into tiny pieces, each of which will be ignored and lost on other physicians and patients.
More than anything else, doctors of podiatric medicine need to become a stable, cohesive profession, and anyone attempting to divide us should be shown the door.
Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Leonard A, Levy, DPM, MPH
Brent D. Haverstock, DPM said, "It would seem that if podiatry is to become a branch of medicine (MD/DO), the APMA would have to meet with the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)..." This remark and so many others from podiatric physicians seem to indicate that the "appetite" for DPMs to acquire an MD or DO degree is rapidly increasing. However, before any meetings take place with the AMA or AOA and the APMA, it is essential that strategic planning take place to determine exactly what the profession needs to do and what needs to be done to get there.
Such an activity must, at the least, include representation from the APMA, the Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, representatives of the current licensing examination body (i.e., American Podiatric Medical Licensing Examination), and the bodies within our profession that represent both the accreditation of undergraduate podiatric medical education and graduate podiatric medical education (i.e., residency training).
It would be a disaster if such a plan was not properly developed and members of our profession were not on the same page. Our effort needs to be one having a uniform voice devoid of bickering by individuals and groups in the profession. The strategic plan developed should be articulated in a document containing the background of the proposal, the state of the profession, including its current education and training, and a detailed description of what is being proposed. I suggest that the time is ripe to undergo such an effort but that it needs to be done very carefully. This formal process must begin now.
Leonard A, Levy, DPM, MPH, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
