APMA Launches Reflect on Your Feet Campaign
"Every 20 seconds, somewhere in the world a limb is lost as a result of diabetes," said APMA President Phillip E. Ward, DPM. "A daily foot self-exam, along with regular visits to a podiatrist, is the best way to prevent foot complications and amputation. If you have trouble reaching your feet to inspect them, prop up a mirror on the floor or ask a friend or family member to help."
|
|
Dr. Phillip Ward |
The Reflect on Your Feet campaign, occurring during November's Diabetes Awareness Month, will share important information about the specific risks associated with the disease, how to conduct a foot self-exam, when to see a podiatrist, and more.

Feet are Like Tires on Your Car: CA Podiatrist
“I always tell my patients the feet are the tires of our car,” says Dr. Abbasseh Towfigh, a podiatrist in Santa Monica, CA. “The more mileage you put on them and the kind of mileage you put on them causes wear and tear at every level, from your skin, to your joints, to the fat padding.”
|
|
Dr. Abbasseh Towfigh |
Towfigh says that as you age, you wear out the fat pads at the bottom of the feet. The cartilage thins in all the joints, and your muscles, tendons, and soft tissue tighten up.

RE: The Passing of Tom Stemberg
From: Hartley Miltchin, DPM
It is with great sorrow that I announce the passing of a good friend, Tom Stemberg, after a courageous battle with cancer. Tom was the ultimate business leader; founder and president of Staples, Petsmart, Carmax, and Zoots. He brought LuLuLemon, David Teas, and OLLY shoes public. Tom lived the American dream and will be sadly missed by his friends, extended family, and business colleagues. A celebration of his life will take place later this month in Boston.
In our many conversations/meetings, he was a strong advocate of the podiatric profession and wore orthotics full-time. I was instrumental in helping his wife Katherine in the development of OLLY Shoes and am still a consultant.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL- LEGAL) - PART 1 | |
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM, James Christina, DPM
I read Dr. Neil Goldberg's posting on LCD for mycotic nails with respect to chart documentation. The questions he raises are spot on. What particularly bothers me as an APMA member and advocate is where is our association, and what are they doing in respect to these particular problems? I would love to get an email, "we are aware of the current change in LCD wording and are all over this our lobbyists and lawyers are working around the clock to stop these changes in their tracks." Instead, I hear rumblings of the CEO making half a million dollars or more while I'm hustling to try to pay the bills. And incidently, when these 2025 Medicare decrease payments kick in, are APMA fees going to be lowered as well?
Jeffrey Kass, DPM, Forest Hills, NY
Local Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) issues are best addressed on a state or MAC-regional basis through the CAC representative and the state association, whose efforts are often coordinated and supported by APMA. Members are encouraged to contact their CAC representatives (a list is available at apma.org/cacpiac) with questions regarding their MAC or LCDs. APMA stands actively ready to help the CAC reps or state associations when needed, especially on issues with a regional or national impact. CAC representatives in cooperation with APMA have done outstanding work recently to identify absent ICD-10 codes in carriers’ LCDs and to work with the MACs to ensure changes are made and podiatrists’ claims are processed correctly.
In the past month, APMA has coordinated CAC efforts (including conference calls to set strategy and provide updates) for Palmetto (Skin Substitutes Draft LCD), NGS (RFC LCD), Cahaba (RFC LCD), and Novitas (HBOT, Strapping, Nerve Injections LCDs) CAC representatives. The CAC representative structure continues to be an invaluable resource to APMA members. APMA will hold its annual joint meeting of the CAC and Private Insurance Advisory Committee (PIAC) this weekend in Washington, DC. Watch for news and updates from the meeting next week.
James Christina, DPM, Executive Director APMA, Bethesda, MD

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Bryan C. Markinson, DPM
The new Novitas LCD has been bantered about for weeks now. I have had conversations with DPMs in other states. They told me that their state associations and CAC reps are silent and non-responsive. The fact is that no one has a solid reliable interpretation of the LCD. It's time APMA solves the confusion immediately. I don’t mean that we should start a fight to change it yet; we just need to clearly know what it means. For my preference, it would be great if we were all suddenly forced to tell Medicare patients that treatment for cutting mycotic toenails, fungal or not, painful or not will be on a cash basis.

RE: Congress Passes Budget Bill That Cuts Medicare Pay in 2025
From: Brian Homer, DPM
When is the AMA, the APMA, and every other medical organization in the country going to stand up and demand appropriate medical reimbursement for doctors in the USA! Year after year, the government threatens us with double digit Medicare cuts, which Congress vetoes at the very last minute. Heck, healthcare providers don't even get cost of living increases each year; instead, our reimbursement continues to decrease each and every year - not to mention the fact that since Obamacare, our reimbursement from insurance companies across the board is now lower than ever! Do any other physicians have a problem with this? Are we just going to sit back and continue to allow insurance companies to reimburse us pennies on the dollar?
