PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES - PART 1
TX Podiatrist Discusses Complications of Diabetes

For people living with diabetes, proper foot and ankle care isn’t just about comfort -- it can be a matter of life and limb. “Diabetes can impact the lower extremity health by causing nerve damage and poor circulation that can lead to serious conditions such as non-healing wounds, infections, deformities, and eventually an amputation,” said Thomas Zgonis, DPM, a podiatric surgeon at the Methodist Diabetic Foot and Ankle Institute (DFAI).

Dr. Thomas Zgonis

Even minor foot issues can escalate quickly in patients with diabetes. “Minor foot and ankle problems such as blisters, non-healing wounds, calluses or toe deformities in the presence of diabetic neuropathy (loss of sensation) or peripheral vascular disease (narrowing or blockage of blood vessels) can cause serious problems with limb-threatening events,” Dr. Zgonis said. Common diabetic foot complications include neuropathy, poor circulation, chronic wounds, infections and deformities like Charcot neuroarthropathy -- a condition that severely weakens foot bones.

PODIATRIC ECONOMICS
Podiatrists Rank #32 in Highest Paying Jobs List

Many American workers dream of landing a six-figure job. Believe it or not, data suggests such high-paying roles are more common than most think. According to a November 2024 study from ADP Research, more than 1 million jobs in the United States pay upward of $500,000.

#32 Podiatrists

Mean Annual Wage: $163,960
Mean Hourly Wage: $78.83

Of course, most workers aren't anywhere near that income bracket. The average salary in the nation was around $62,000 as of the first quarter of 2025, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. And while June 2025 BLS data also shows salaries have increased by 3.6% year over year, raises might slow down in 2025 compared to 2024.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

5 Ways to Keep Politics Out of Your Medical Practice

Here are five ways to keep political discussions from disrupting your medical practice.

5. Offer safe outlets outside the workplace

Your employees shouldn’t feel they have to suppress their beliefs entirely. Encourage appropriate venues for discussion, such as community volunteering, after-hours gatherings, or personal social media (with clear boundaries around referencing the practice).

As Medical Economics advises, setting limits on political talk “helps reduce workplace tension and keeps employees focused on their professional responsibilities.” Giving staff an outlet for expression outside of work helps prevent frustrations from bubbling up during clinic hours.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
3 Creative Ways to Lower Your Retirement Taxes

You can apply key minimalism concepts for potential tax savings. Here’s how.

1. Downsize in retirement to lower property taxes

According to Senior Living, about 51% percent of retirees (age 50 or older) downsize to cut costs, pursue a simpler lifestyle, or for logistical reasons. Notably, downsizing and minimalism are related concepts. Both emphasize simplicity and intentionality.
  • Moving to a smaller, potentially less expensive home can sometimes result in lower property tax bills.
  • Smaller homes can have lower maintenance and utility costs, which can free more income for tax-advantaged investments or other things important to you.
Moving to a state with low property taxes or no income taxes could potentially save you hundreds [or thousands] in taxes a year. Both moves could reduce your overall tax burden and improve your quality of life.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: Obituaries in PM News
From: Robert Gottlieb, DPM

There seems to be an obsession with reporting the passing away of a podiatrist in just about every issue. With nearly 20,000 practitioners, doctors passing away will be a regular event. Does death really have to be a reported headline article regularly? I think not. I think this type of routine coverage of obituaries is way overdone. Perhaps just publish all those passing away on a monthly basis, in a separate writing.

Robert Gottlieb, DPM, Oyster Bay, NY

Editor's Comment: PM News believes that the every podiatrist's memory needs to be recognized. This 31-year tradition informs classmates, colleagues, and the entire podiatric community of our collective loss. PM News readers often respond with insights about the descendant that would otherwise go untold.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY)
From: David Secord, DPM

I greatly admire the time and effort Dr. Tomczak puts into his messages to us. I'm sure that he will be remembered as a sage voice among us. As such, here's my two cents, for what it's worth:

I am of course as old as dirt and don’t really have a dog in this fight. I’m only still working because I lost everything I owned in combination with the Christus Spohn crucifixion and the 2008 banking-housing collapse given to us by the Community Reinvestment Act. Although I’ve taken the USMLE I, II, and III practice exams and passed with flying colors, we are at least a decade away from our two, divergent paths.

One will be obsolescence (brought about by Topor-induced, entrenched fiefdoms, no one will surrender); or common sense (add the classes and residency rotations to become on par with our other allopathic...
