UTRGV SPM Holds Inaugural White Coat Ceremony
Students in the inaugural cohort of the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine donned their white coats for the first time, marking their official participation as student-doctors. The school’s first White Coat ceremony, held Oct. 28 at the Harlingen Convention Center, introduced the 27 students of the Class of 2026.

Javier Cavazos, DPM, associate dean of Academic Affairs for the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine – the first in Texas and one of only nine others in the country – said White Coat ceremonies or similar rites of passage take place in almost all schools of podiatric medicine in the United States and Canada.

NM Podiatrist Speaks at Jordanian Society of Surgeons Conference
Gerit Mulder, DPM, PhD, MS was recently invited back to Ammon, Jordan to be a guest speaker at the 50th Annual Conference of the Jordanian Society of Surgeons, in partnership with the Arab Society of Surgeons. The meeting was attended by more that 220 surgeons from around the Middle East and included speakers from Italy, Turkey, Jordan, and the United States. Dr. Mulder lectured on “A Single Application Regenerative Matrix for Difficult to Heal Wounds.” Surgical cases on both days were also performed as part of the Conference.

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has a very high number of diabetics and diabetes-related amputations, and the two days of lectures and assisted clinical surgeries were greatly appreciated for the high level of educational information.

Toetal Solutions Raises $1.8 Million for Ziptoe Hammertoe System
Malvern-based Toetal Solutions has raised $1.8 million for its core product. The money, raised through equity financing, will be used to finalize the Ziptoe Hammertoe System and go towards pursuing FDA approval, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Ziptoe is an implant that assists foot and ankle surgeons to “address rigid hammertoe deformities with seamless precision,” according to the company’s website. “The system has been thoughtfully designed with surgeon input to address the common pitfalls of the devices available to surgeons today,” said podiatrist Nick Romansky, DPM.

Six Steps to Ensure Your Future Practice Success
Your success or lack thereof will rest upon patient loyalty. Here are six steps to take:
1) Read Peter Shankman’s Zombie Loyalists. The core message is that the best marketing you can have consists of employees and patients who are rabid fans of your practice. You want to be so good that your staff and patients rave about you and the care you provided. Despite its title, Zombie Loyalists has nothing to do with zombies and everything to do with your future success. It is a wonderful read.

Query: Bromhidrosis in a 7 Year Old
I had a mom bring in her 7 year old son of Mexican descent with the chief complaint of "stinky feet" that has been a problem since he was 2 years old. The mom and son both claim the smell is horrible. Mom said she has this problem also but only in one foot, which is controlled with Drysol solution but this didn't do anything for her son. He was wearing thicker socks that were slightly damp with no skin maceration or other skin changes. Mom said he has about 4-5 different pairs of shoes and switches them around every day. The shoes he was wearing were good quality and breathable.
I made some recommendations such as daily use of Lysol spray to shoes, application of deodorant to feet, spray powder, possible soaks with black tea, etc. I've seen many teenage boys with this problem over the years but this one is a first. I am wondering if there is something in their diet that would possibly cause foot odor? As this has been a long-term problem, any ideas as to the cause and treatment?

RE: Difficulty Scheduling PT after Surgery

I had surgical patients schedule their post-op PT well in advance of the procedures. This is especially important for range-of-motion work. You can easily predict the diagnoses and PT needs for the orders for nearly all surgeries. If modifications are needed, you simply update the orders as you would anyway but at least your patients are scheduled.

As shocked as we are as podiatric medical specialists about perceived liars in the courtroom, regretfully, this is just a sign of the times. “The truth” is what a skilled attorney can convince a jury to believe is the truth. We don’t have to look far outside of our profession to see the differences between Facts and Alternative Facts.
For instance, in 2020 were people dying from COVID-19 infections or the roll-out of the 5-G wireless network? All of us are able to find theories that conform to our beliefs. The skilled attorney in a courtroom simply exploits this. We are in a totally new ballpark today.
