UTRGV Podiatry School a Natural Expansion for Diabetes Research: TX Podiatrist
UT-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is moving forward with its new podiatry program, planning to welcome its inaugural class in the fall of next year. UTRGV got the approval of the UT Board of Regents earlier this year to establish a School of Podiatry and a doctor of podiatric medicine degree program. It will be only the 10th podiatry school in the country, and the first in Texas.
|
|
Dr. Lawrence Harkless |
The interim dean of the school, Lawrence Harkless, DPM says the Rio Grande Valley is an ideal location for the school because of the high rate of diabetes. Harkless says the School of Podiatry would be a natural expansion of the research being done at the South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute that’s part of the UTRGV School of Medicine.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Things to Consider When a Physician Goes Part-Time - Part 5
There are many factors to consider in coming up with an effective part-time/reduced modality policy that works with the physician practice. The following are some concepts to consider:
5. If a physician does switch to part-time status, does this mean that they must redeem a portion of their ownership?
-
For example, if a physician becomes a .5 FTE, should the physician then be redeemed by fifty percent when they make the change?
-
Often, if an owner goes to part-time status but retains full ownership rights, the physician may still have an equal vote in practice operations, an equal share of profits, and should the practice sell, would still be entitled to an equal share of profits. The other physicians will typically find this unfair. Of course, all of these elements can be agreed upon and properly documented, but practices often forget to address these concerns when they allow a physician to go part-time.

Query: Can Podiatrists Do COVID-19 Testing in Their Offices?
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
I just got a call from a company trying to sell me COVID-19 rapid response tests. This involves taking a drop of the patient’s blood and determining if there are antibodies. The salesman assured me that I am allowed to do this test and can be reimbursed for doing it. He said there was a waiver that would allow our office to do this test. Before I bought the tests, I told him I would run it past my colleagues to determine if indeed podiatrists are allowed to do this test. Are we?

RE: MIPS 2020
From: Greg Caringi, DPM
I am surprised by how little I have read about MIPS 2020. During a recent online seminar, the lecturer basically said - the quality measures most applicable to podiatry have been eliminated, and the remaining ones are not supported by most EHR systems. He recommended taking any/all exemptions. I know that my participation has nothing to do with the quality of care I provide my patients. MIPS is just another bureaucratic annoyance that takes my time away from patient care. That said, I can't afford any decrease in my Medicare payments.
What are my colleagues doing for MIPS 2020? Maybe the most important question - Why is there even a MIPS 2020 program to deal with during the year of COVID-19? Why is there not a full exemption for this terrible year?
Greg Caringi, DPM, Lansdale, PA

RE: Harassment from Ciox Heath for Chart Requests
From: Jack Ressler, DPM
I received a chart request from Ciox health for patient charts. I called them to verify the email of where I need to send an invoice for this service. I sent an invoice as per their protocol. I did not receive any confirmation, but still continue to get ten page faxes requesting charts to the point of feeling harassed. As a group, is there any recourse we can take to prevent this repeated barrage of requests? They call from various telephone numbers and try to negotiate a price per chart, which I tell them is not negotiable. They follow-up with more faxes. If this isn't harassment, I don't know what is.
