APMA Launches "Don't Lose Your Nerve to Diabetes" Campaign
The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) has announced a new public education campaign, Don't Lose Your Nerve to Diabetes. The campaign will educate the public about the importance of preventing diabetic peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) before it happens and will underscore the critical role podiatrists play in treating diabetes and complications such as neuropathy.
|
|
Dr. David Edwards |
"Pain or numbness in your feet is never normal," said APMA President David G. Edwards, DPM. "What you can't feel can hurt you. Daily self-exams are critical for people with diabetes, but if you notice any changes in sensation in your feet, don't wait to see your podiatrist!"

MD Podiatrist Discusses Compression Sock Use
If tired muscles and swollen feet are cramping your style, compression socks work to reduce fluid build-up and fatigue in your legs by promoting better blood flow in the veins of the calves and feet. Athletes, pregnant women, and people who travel a lot can benefit from using compression socks because they help pump oxygen to damaged muscle tissues, helping them repair faster. But nurses, waiters, mail carriers, and other workers who stand for long shifts can develop pain in their calves and heels from being on their feet all day, so wearing compression socks can help with recovery.
|
|
Dr. Priya Parthasarathy |
"I usually recommend a lighter compression, like 10 to 15 mmHg or 15 to 20 mmHg, to begin with, and for more moderate to severe swelling; we start to go up in numbers, such as 20 to 30 mmHg or 30 to 40 mmHg, which should be a custom fit and prescribed by a doctor," says Priya Parthasarathy, DPM, a podiatrist based in Silver Spring, MD, and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).

PA Podiatrist Retires, Marking a New Era for Pine Street Podiatry
He has been called an “institution” in downtown Harrisburg - a podiatrist who served the community faithfully for more than three decades on Pine Street. Now, Brian Dechowitz, DPM is calling it quits, giving up his practice and primarily moving out of state, while a fellow physician with Harrisburg roots takes his place at Pine Street Podiatry.
|
|
Drs. Avia Reuveni and Brian Dechowitz |
On the very first day in practice—July 1, 1986 — Dr. Dechowitz treated 11 patients. On Aug. 23, 2019, he treated a new patient, number 11,897. Avia Reuveni, DPM, Dechowitz’s successor, will begin practicing at Pine Street Podiatry on Nov. 18.

Podiatrists #2 in List of Hot Jobs That Pay More Than $100,000 a Year
Choosing a career can be an overwhelming decision thanks to the vast array of options available to you. So, aiming high and setting a six-figure salary goal could be a smart move — it narrows down your choices and might even help you secure a bright financial future. To find jobs where you can earn more than $100,000 a year, GOBankingRates analyzed occupations from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that paid a median salary between $100,000-$150,000 in 2018.
2. Podiatrist Salary: $148,220 To diagnose and treat complications with the human foot, you’ll need to earn a doctorate in podiatric medicine, complete a three-year residency program, and become licensed. However, investing in your education will certainly pay dividends in your career — especially if you work in the Charlotte, Concord, and Gastonia metropolitan area in North Carolina. Podiatrists in that region take home a staggering $256,950 per year, which is over $100,000 more than the U.S. average. Overall, these doctors can expect an increase of 1,100 positions in their field between 2016-26 — a growth rate of 10%.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Marketing Steps Your Medical Practice Should Be Taking - Part 3
Marketing is no longer an optional undertaking for physician practices, particularly independent ones. As competition increases and patients take a more active role in practice selection, your viability and growth will increasingly rely on strong marketing initiatives. Relying primarily on referrals from other providers and patients is a losing proposition. Here are the first steps all practices need to take:
3. Make strong first impressions: Audit your website. Now that you know how to differentiate your practice, it’s time to get the word out there. Start by reviewing your medial practice website. This is the first place many prospective patients will go to find out more about you. Key questions to ask include:
-
Is it clear what your unique value is? Does it clearly describe the kind of care you provide? The conditions you treat? Your approach to care?
-
Is it easy for patients to navigate and find the information they need?
-
Do you have patient testimonials prominently displayed?
-
Do you have physician headshots and bios, and if so, do the physicians appear personable and relatable?
-
Is it clear what insurances you accept and, if applicable, what healthcare systems you are affiliated with?
Answer these questions and modify as necessary. If you have the resources, invest in professional video services and/or website development services to upgrade your image and visual branding.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Charles M Lombardi, DPM
All this musing about two separate training programs is amusing to someone who has been around for some time and has been intimately involved in the progression of this profession. In 2000 or 2001, the CPME ad hoc committee to rewrite the 320 document recommended to the HOD and the community of interest three separate programs: A 2-year surgical, a 3-year surgical, and a 2-year primary podiatric care program. The APMA HOD and the community of interest REJECTED it outright, stating that ALL podiatrist must be trained the same. Some of the SAME people that were opposed to a separate primary podiatric care program are now in favor of it. The ABPS argued against a unified program, but lost the battle.
Now looking back, the unified program allowed many states to change the scope of practice laws because one of the arguments against us was a lack of unified training. Much good came from that decision. I was always in favor of two separate training tracks, but that train has left the station. To hear the SAME people who were opposed to a separate training program in 2001, but now say our profession must have two separate training programs are in psychiatric terms schizophrenic. Our profession would be considered a schizophrenic profession by lawmakers.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
I’m confused by Leonard Levy’s most recent message in this discussion in the October 31, 2019 #6,539 issue, in which he refers to the “highly controversial proposal to have two specialty boards in the podiatric medical profession (i.e., podiatric surgery and podiatric medicine”. It’s not a proposal. We currently have these two specialty boards, ABPS and ABFAS. What we don’t have is two medical specialties. We have two specialty boards that represent one specialty, podiatry, and that structure is what is confusing the public and the medical establishment.
Editor's note: Dr. Sherman's extended-length letter can be read here.
