NY Podiatrist Discusses Heel-to-Toe Drop in Walking Shoes
Heel-to-toe drop refers to the height difference between the heel and the forefoot of a shoe. Most walking shoes have a drop between 6 and 12 millimeters. For most people, a heel-to-toe drop of around 10 millimeters will be comfortable and functional, says podiatrist Samantha Landau, DPM, MPH.
|
|
Dr. Samantha Landau |
A higher drop may offer more heel cushioning and support, especially if you strike with your heel first, while a lower drop encourages a more midfoot strike and can help improve balance and foot strength over time. Ultimately, it comes down to your personal comfort preferences and walking style.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Ways to Keep Politics Out of Your Medical Practice
Here are five ways to keep political discussions from disrupting your medical practice.
4. Link your policy to practice values
Employees are more likely to support a “no politics” rule when it’s framed around respect, inclusion, and patient comfort rather than restriction. A Physicians Practice feature on building a patient-first culture highlights how linking policies to patient outcomes drives accountability and behavior change.
By reminding staff that avoiding political debates helps patients feel welcome and respected, leaders can reinforce that neutrality is an extension of patient care — not a limitation on free speech.

The 7 Worst Assets to Leave Your Kids or Grandkids
Leaving these assets to your loved ones may be more trouble than it’s worth. Here's how to avoid adding to their grief after you're gone.
7. Cryptocurrency
If you are a Crypto enthusiast, you may think passing along these holdings to your heirs is a good idea. However, if you die without a will or fail to give your heirs instructions on accessing these holdings, they may be lost forever. Vanished. Forever lost. Studies from sources like Chainalysis and CoinLedger suggest that 3 to 4 million BTC, or about 15% to 20% of the current mined Bitcoin supply, may be permanently lost. At today’s price of about $117,000 per BTC, this represents a staggering value of $350 to $470 billion — a massive fortune.
Additionally, the IRS does not treat cryptocurrency like cash, so the process of inheriting crypto can be more complex. That’s because the government views crypto as digital assets and, more specifically, personal property, similar to stocks or tangible property. For this reason, your crypto holdings may be subject to capital gains taxes.

RE: The Passing of Andrew P. Black, DPM
Andrew Paul Black, 47, passed away on October 26, 2025. Andrew attended Des Moines University, studying podiatric medicine. Andrew completed a three-year residency program in Salt Lake City, Utah, while working at the Veterans Hospital.
|
|
Dr. Andrew Black |
Upon completing his training, Andrew accepted a position with St. Alphonsus Health System and moved his family to New Plymouth, Idaho, where they hoped to put down roots. For 14 years, Andrew served the communities of Ontario and Fruitland as a podiatrist with St. Alphonsus. He was deeply respected by his colleagues and beloved by his patients—not only for his medical skill but for his compassion.

| CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM CODINGHELPLINE.COM | |
Query: Proper Billing of Bunionectomies
How do I know how to bill the 1st metatarsal-cuneiform fusion without any metatarsal head surgery? What happens when I do a bump removal of the first metatarsal head with an arthrodesis proximally?
Codinghelpline.com Subscriber
Response from Codinghelpline.com: A 1st metatarsal-tarsal arthrodesis single joint procedure is just that. It is coded as CPT 28740. If you do the bunionectomy with the 1st metatarsal-tarsal arthrodesis procedure "any method", it is coded as CPT 28297.

RE: Podiatric Obfuscation
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
Obfuscation is the ability to make things obscure or unclear. A wonderful example is Mark Twain popularized the quote, “There are lies, damned lies, and statistics.” Simply put, it is obscuring the facts, and maybe even talking about statistics and probability. There are two classic ways to look at probability. One is the frequentist view which tells us that if we flip a coin 100 times, when we’re done, we will end up with a 50:50 ratio or close to it of heads and tails. The other method is called the Bayesian or belief-based method of looking at the facts that we know right now or interpreting part of the facts to influence what we are going to say. We are merely leaving out some important details. A hot topic for another posting might be, “Are podiatric seminars science-based or influencer-based experiences.” You get the idea.
An alternative way of describing Bayesian statistics is to say, “Probability probably wouldn’t exist if we had all the probable information.” So, probability gives us a way to think about things when we don’t have all the...

RE: Outrageous Shoe Sharing Story of the Day
A middle-aged male patient presented for a follow-up today. I complimented him on the new shoes he was wearing which were roomier than his prior set of shoes. He told me that these shoes are not his, they were his son's shoes, and that they frequently wear each other's shoes. I let him know that this is the first time I have come across anyone who shares shoes with another person.
