The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 39th Annual Student Writing Competition.

All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. (NOT AI generated) Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Plantar Fasciitis Rarely Requires Surgery: MA Podiatrist
“Plantar fasciitis is caused by tearing of this fascia from either the tightness of this posterior complex beginning to tear and/or the torque of the foot mechanics,” explained podiatrist Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics. He added that some foot types are more prone to putting pressure or twisting the fascia than others, and suggested learning about your own specific foot type in order to determine the most effective way to treat your pain.

Fortunately, Dr. DeCaro said that plantar fasciitis can go away on its own, rarely requires surgical intervention, and can be effectively managed with over-the-counter aids. However, experts caution that if pain persists for more than a few weeks, you should seek professional advice; there’s a chance you might need physical therapy or other guidance for the issue.

“Training and stretching are vitally important for preventing sports injuries,” said Andrea Dirksen, DPM of the Aspirus Woodruff Clinic. RICE therapy is one of the best ways to help control an injured part of the body from swelling, such as an ankle or a foot. “Rest, ice, compression, elevation, taking it easy for a few days,” said Dr. Dirksen.

While symptoms of a sports injury can vary based on the type of injury, knowing the symptoms that may start to arise can help to identify if the person should seek a professional evaluation: “The swelling, redness, pain, irritation, inability to wear a show comfortably, inability to walk correctly, or the inability to go back to that sport and play at the same level the next day, the next practice, the next game,” said Dirksen.

On Wednesday October 30, the University of Barcelona (UB) presented the UB Reig Jofre Podiatric Care for Oncology Patients Classroom, a pioneering project whose main objective is to offer specialized podiatric care to oncology patients, as well as to develop research in this field in order to combat the adverse effects of treatments.

“Behavioral health challenges rarely live in isolation. We find our patients living with diabetes — a high percentage of whom are covered by Medicaid — are managing their diabetes and a behavioral health issue in tandem — only exacerbating the complexity of one’s chronic disease,” said Denise Levy, DPM, with Montefiore Medical Center. “Diabetes distress is real, and it impacts far too many of our most at-risk patients. Putting mental health investments on par with physical health for patients with diabetes is the one-two punch needed to make whole person care more accessible.”
