CPME NEWS

CPME Grants Candidacy Status for LECOM as 11th Podiatry School

At the Council on Podiatric Medical Education’s (CPME) meeting last week, it granted Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) School of Podiatric Medicine candidacy status for accreditation as a podiatric medical college. While it is anticipated final approval will be given by CPME, there are still some processes to go through before that occurs.

Dr. Jason Lee

The college is based in Erie, PA with Jason E. Lee, DPM as its anticipated dean. It is projected that the first class will be in the fall of 2023, and will have 40 seats. This will be the 11th podiatry school.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Aging Leads to Dry Skin on Feet: UK Podiatrist

Aging plays into the gradual dehydration of your feet, causing the skin of your feet to look dry and flaky. Over time, the sweat glands in the feet lose their activeness and make the skin look dry, so we need to be wary of our hydration levels as we get older, podiatrist Margaret Dabbs tells The Guardian. "To help prevent and treat common foot complaints, good home care is necessary," she emphasizes.

Margaret Dabbs

Dabbs (via Women's Health) recommends filing your feet when they are dry and not wet because wet skin masks the areas that need to be addressed. Also, if you file with imprecision, you can over-file and weaken the skin tissues, which makes your skin more vulnerable to infection.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
4 Ways Streamlining Front Office Operations Can Drive Revenue For Your Practice

2. Automate your appointment reminders.

Ninety percent of cell phone users ignore calls and rarely check voicemails. However, people respond to text messages in about ninety seconds and check emails more than thirty-four times daily. Practices utilizing appointment scheduling software can set up reminders and notifications for upcoming patient appointments. Patients can confirm, cancel or reschedule with a few clicks.

For practices, automating appointment reminders reduces no-shows, improves scheduling accuracy, and eliminates the time-consuming task of manually confirming appointments. In addition, when appointments are canceled in advance or left unconfirmed, the practice can fill those available appointment slots to maximize profitability.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Removal of Foreign Body

I have a patient with multiple, retained metal fragments (bristles from a cleaning tool) and a subsequent infection that is going to require surgery. The fragments are deeper than the subcutaneous layer and located at the 1st intermetatarsal space. Any thoughts on an ICD-10 code?

Codingline Member

Response: Based upon the above post, the most appropriate ICD-10-CM codes to use for the multiple, retained metal fragments and the subsequent infection necessitating surgery are the following:
M79.57 Residual foreign body in soft tissue, ankle and foot
Z18.10 Retained metal fragments, unspecified or
Z78.11 Retained magnetic metal fragments or
Z78.12 Retained nonmagnetic metal fragments
L03.115 Cellulitis of right lower limb or,
L03.116 Cellulitis of left lower limb

What about the CPT code? Since the foreign bodies are located deeper than the subcutaneous layer within the 1st intermetatarsal space, the most appropriate CPT code would be the following:
CPT 28192 Removal of foreign body, foot; deep or
CPT 28193 Removal of foreign body, foot; complicated

The choice of CPT code would be based upon the extent of the procedure that was performed. Since all of the metal fragments are located within the 1st intermetatarsal space, it would be appropriate to bill the CPT code one time.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Deborah Ross. I attended the same residency program the year following her. She was a fine doctor and a very warm and considerate person. I appreciated getting to know her.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ACFAS NEWS)
From: Joan Oloff, DPM, MS

I would like to thank Patrick for the thoughtful response to my letter. My intention was to make sure we continue to acknowledge and work together to improve diversity within our profession, particularly within our surgical subspecialty. This is not merely for the benefit of the women in our profession. The profession as a whole will benefit. I am grateful for the strides that have been made, but we have a long way to go.

Women physicians lead complicated lives. While they have the ability to provide invaluable contributions, they may be reluctant to step forward. I am hopeful that the committee will continue to find success in recruiting the many qualified women in...
