PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
The Right Travel Socks Matter: NC Podiatrist
Pack the right travel socks. It sounds trivial, but it’s not. “Many travelers fail to recognize the importance of choosing the right socks,” says Jane Andersen, DPM, a Chapel Hill, NC podiatrist and president of the North Carolina Foot & Ankle Society. “The wrong socks can lead to blisters, sweaty feet, and even more serious problems like blood clots.”
|
Dr. Jane Andersen |
For travelers, there are several kinds of socks worth considering. They include compression socks or compression stockings, which are designed to help prevent blood clots; hiking socks, which are designed to keep your feet warm during the winter and prevent blisters; and everyday socks, usually made of cotton or a synthetic blend, for hanging out.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
NY Podiatrist Discusses Diabetic Neuropathy
Miguel Cunha, DPM, a podiatrist in private practice and founder of Gotham Footcare in New York City, explains how diabetes leads to the development of diabetic neuropathies. "The elevated blood glucose glycates the nerves, arteries, white blood cells, and the skin. That means it sugarcoats these structures," and that means pain messages that would normally tell you that something is wrong aren't able to get through that sugary coating and be transmitted appropriately.
|
Dr. Miguel Cunha |
In addition to the loss of sensation in the lower extremities, many diabetics also experience vascular problems, again because high blood glucose levels disrupt blood vessel function, "so now you don't have blood flow, oxygen, and nutrients going to the foot," says Dr. Cunha. This can slow the healing of wounds significantly, and if they don't heal adequately, they often get worse.

PODIATRIC RESEARCH |
MI and CA Podiatrists Present Research at NIH DFU Workshop
The United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently held its first ever workshop on diabetic foot ulcers and biomarkers in Bethesda Maryland. Podiatric surgeons were well represented at the gathering. Drs. James Wrobel and Brian Schmidt represented the University of Michigan, and David G. Armstrong the University of Southern California. Wrobel was a key moderator for sessions dealing with lower extremity ischemia.

Dr. Schmidt presented new data on phenotyping wounds prone to inflammation. Dr. Armstrong presented novel new research on injectable sensors that could be read using a next-generation patch. The meeting, which consisted of scientists from across the nation, is designed to develop a consortium of research centers to scale up important early-stage research in wound healing focusing on biomarkers and diagnostics.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
UK Podiatrist Discusses Duchess of Sussex's Morton's Toe
Podiatrist Dipesh Raja, who runs the Chelsea practice Footopia, believes that the Duchess of Sussex's longer second toe explains why Meghan appears to wear shoes which are too big for her: when she announced her engagement to Prince Harry, she was snapped in a pair of Aquazzura crisscross suede sandals which had a gap at the heel.
|
Dipesh Raja |
Raja said, "The problem that you get from Morton’s toe is a problem of gait. Normally, when you walk, the big toe takes your weight but in this case it’s your second toe. As a result, the foot shape changes and gets wider and wider. Shoes that were once comfortable become less so. So, to make up for this, people sometimes go for an extra size to get the width."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Back Office Billing Strategies - Part 6
6. Designate one person to follow-up on patient balances. Your front office is making sure patients are aware of their balances. Someone in the back needs to be tasked with calling the patients and asking for payments. Many practices outsource this responsibility. It’s less important who makes the calls so long as follow-ups are conducted on an ongoing and regular basis.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: Collecting Fees Upfront
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
This is a worsening quandary day by day in my office: collecting fees upfront from the patient when services are rendered. The old adage says, “It is easier to collect money from the front door than it is from the back door.” But, with ever increasing deductibles into the $5-10K range, many of the medical services and minor surgical in-office services are not usually covered by an insurance carrier until the deductible is met.
In this day and age, you would think the patient would be more educated about their benefits, but alas, they are not. They are ignorant in thinking that the “co-pay” is their only responsibility and the rest will be...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Edmond F. Mertzenich, DPM
Over the years, I have tried to find what the median salary for a podiatrist is. I too found large discrepancies. Looking at statistical information requires careful consideration about where the numbers are coming from. One must be careful of all sources. For me, the most likely trustworthy source is from Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (read up about podiatrists and other medical professionals). This book gives all sorts of information about a wide range of fields.
Also, remember median is a statistic that indicates that ½ of a group of people earn above or below the median. So, there are people who earn way more, and there are some who earn way less. So, if an associate desires a salary increase, look for what they are bringing in financially, what personal value they bring to the practice, and make the judgment if that person will be increasing the value of the practice. Median salary is only a starting point.
