PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
OH Podiatrist Provides Advice on Finding the Right Running or Walking Shoes

For starters, make sure the shoe fits. “A lot of people wear the wrong sized shoe,” Mark Mendeszoon, DPM says. “We typically see people choosing shoes that are too small, and over time, that causes problems. As people age, feet can grow wider or flatter, especially into our fourth decade and beyond, says Dr. Mendeszoon. Jamming your feet into shoes that are too small can cause issues such as hammertoes, bunions, corns, and calluses.

Dr. Mark Mendeszoon

To ensure you’re wearing the right size shoe, he recommends getting your feet measured every two years at a brick-and-mortar shoe store whose staff has been trained to help people pick out functional shoes for their chosen activity. He explains, “Find [a shop] that will measure your feet sitting down and then standing and will watch you walk [or run] to get a general idea of the type of foot you have.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Three Easy Ways to Boost Your Practice’s Search Rankings

Here are the three most important 2021 SEO tactics that you can implement on your website today to improve your patient acquisition rates.

3. Focus on Low-Competition Keywords with High Search Volumes for your Practice's Specialty - This is one of the best ways to stay on top of SEO trends and rank above your competitors. Low-competition keywords are those that are not yet widely used on other doctors’ websites. Focusing on low-competition keywords that are just starting to gain traction can put your healthcare practice at the top of the search results and boost your reputation as one of the leading industry experts for that specific trend.

Next, write and publish content featuring those keywords or topics before the competition has a chance to jump on them. Using low-competition keywords also results in a higher number of original, organic content on your website that is generally favored by Google’s algorithm.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR)
From: Jeffrey Baker, DPM

We recently implemented the Modernizing Medicine [ModMed] EMR throughout the Weil Foot & Ankle Institute with a go-live date of August 30th, 2021. I cannot give enough praise on how outstanding ModMed is and I recommend the software without hesitation. The platform contains everything we were looking for in a system to address the litany of requirements within today's private practice landscape. All of our physicians have an iPad and do all their charting carrying the device from room to room with them.

EMA "out of the box" is loaded with high-end evidence-based, podiatry-specific content and is intuitive as it will learn your specific preferences for each impression [diagnosis] you encounter over time. The combination of EMAs functions and integrated HIPAA-compliant voice recognition allows for the ability to efficiently obtain high quality patient notes which satisfy current E/M coding guidelines. Add in all the other things the EHR provides such as the patient portal, seamless telehealth visits, practice analytics, patient scheduling, and billing. It is truly an all-in-one product which is ready to perform in 2021 and able to conform to changes in the future.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Ron Freireich, DPM

Dr. Kass mentions a few of the many expenses that are rising, and this trend is certainly going to get worse. The other side of this perfect storm which has been brewing for many years is continued decreased reimbursements. Dr. Kass is 100% correct in saying that this model is not sustainable. The difference between healthcare and what other businesses are doing is that we cannot pass our increased expenses onto the consumer.

Not only are new graduates not going to be able to pay back student loans but they, along with everyone else in healthcare, are going to be unable keep up with paying any of their bills. It’s a no-brainer; when expenses are more than payments….it’s over.

RESPONSES/XOMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Kim Antol

Dr. Kass is correct as people are of the opinion doctors are the enemy...perceived as the rich and affluent taking their hard-earned money. Powerful insurance companies are able to take advantage of that, appearing as heroes.

Unlike most necessary items, digital x-ray equipment cost (while still a relatively large expense) has gone down. We at Sigma Digital X-ray have been the constant driving force over the years, reducing cost by as much as 50% for the small practice, rather than increasing it.

On the other hand, mainstream hospitals have seen the opposite...with increased pricing.

Kim Antol, President, Sigma Digital X-Ray

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Robert S Steinberg, DPM

I find ETF far easier in my practice. Payer sites have shortcuts in our browser. Printing an EOB takes a minute or two. While EOBs are printing, the staff is doing other things. Payments via direct deposit take less time. Lost in the mail does not happen.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
From: Norman Rubin, DPM

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Ayne. Ayne shared office space with me as we both started our practices at about the same time. As a matter of fact, we shared the same office where our two desks were set up in the same room. As a result, we consulted each other daily about our patients and discussed interesting cases.

Ayne was the consummate professional, an amazing athlete, and most important of all, a kind and compassionate physician, as well as a great friend. I am certain that she will be missed by many patients and friends. My condolences to her family and may Ayne rest in peace.
