Athlete's Foot is Most Common Cause of Peeling: NY Podiatrist
You've probably been spending a lot of time recently curled up barefoot on the couch. Comfy as you may be, you may now notice that your feet have taken quite the beating, with the skin on the bottom looking rough, cracked, and maybe even peeling. "Peeling feet is definitely common, and there are various reasons why," says Rebecca Pruthi, DPM, a podiatrist and owner of Foot Care of Manhattan. "We're on our feet all the time and the constant pounding and walking can cause cracking and scaling of the skin," she says.
|
Dr. Rebecca Pruthi |
The most common reason patients have peeling feet is a fungal infection (like athlete's foot)—although they might not always realize it. "A lot of times it just presents itself as peeling skin and patients don't have the itchiness, so they don't know it's a fungal infection," Pruthi says.

Aussie Podiatrist Describes What Healthy Feet Should Look Like
Sydney podiatrist Kate McArthur says neglecting your feet can cause myriad health issues from nasty fungal infections to chronic pain in the hips, knees, and back. What does a ‘perfect’ foot like like? A perfectly healthy foot is flesh toned in color and has little to no ‘thick’, callused skin, McArthur reveals. She says nails should be pinky with a whiteish tip, without any flakes or brittleness, while a yellow tinge on either skin or nails is a telltale sign that something is wrong.
|
Kate McArthur |
"If you’re seeing dry or yellowed skin, especially on the heels, it means your feet are getting too much pressure from the shoes you’re wearing and how you’re walking," McArthur said. "We don’t think about our feet because we simply don’t look at them all the time – it’s not like your hands that you see right in front of you, but they’re just as important."

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
Remote Temperature Monitoring for DFUs Decreases Overall Resource Utilization
A study of patients at high risk of developing diabetic foot complications, who used once-daily foot temperature monitoring saw major amputations completely eliminated and all-cause hospital admissions drop sharply. The research was published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, a journal published in partnership with the American Diabetes Association.
The study, "Lower resource utilization for patients with healed diabetic foot ulcers during participation in a prevention program with foot temperature monitoring" by Adam L. Isaac, DPM, et al. found that "hospitalization rates were approximately 50% lower during the study program than before or after it."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Top Tips for Succession Planning - Part 4
Positioning yourself and your practice for a smooth transition takes time and thoughtful planning.
4. Stay realistic (continued)
-
A common reason for this is that many physicians attribute far too much goodwill to their practice, often without any supporting evidence.
-
It is critical to consult with a trusted adviser who can provide a realistic view of your practice value.

MEDICAL-LEGAL TIP OF THE DAY |
Presenting Your Medicare Case to the ALJ- Part 15
38. Do you need an assistant with access to a fax machine in the room with you? Have an assistant—who can fax any needed document to the ALJ during the hearing—in the room with you during the hearing. Be sure to tell the judge at the beginning of the hearing that the assistant is in the room with you.
39. What “standard of proof” applies to an ALJ hearing? Supposedly, you have to prove you should be paid by a “preponderance of the evidence.” This means you must prove it is 51% more likely you are correct, as opposed to 49% the MAC (or the RAC, CERT, UPIC, or SMRC) and the QIC are correct. Is it ever that close? No. The judge will want a comfortable margin. Why? The judge does not want to be overruled by the Council in the event the contractor appeals the ALJ decision.
40. Is it okay to tell the judge which Medicare rules apply to your hearing? No. Do not tell the ALJ which Medicare rules (laws) apply to your hearing. The judge will stop listening as soon as you start down that path. The only thing the judge wants to hear from you is why the denied treatment was medically reasonable and necessary.
