INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS
UK Report: Podiatry’s Pivotal Role in Healthcare, Shortages Loom

Foot and lower limb health may not be the first thing that comes to mind when considering the NHS’s biggest challenges, but it holds tremendous potential to transform lives and ease pressures across the system. Diabetes-related foot complications alone cost the NHS an estimated £1bn annually, mainly through preventable admissions, prolonged hospital stays, surgical interventions, and long-term disability from amputations. More than 80 percent of foot and lower limb amputations could be prevented with timely, coordinated foot care.

The podiatry profession faces critical shortages caused by more than a decade of under-investment, a drop in new graduates, and high attrition rates as older podiatrists retire. As of today, there is only one NHS podiatrist for every 5,000 residents in England.

IN THE COURTS
Allstate Sues 2 NY Podiatrists for Orchestrating No-fault Fraud Scheme

Allstate Insurance Company and its affiliates have filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, alleging that two New York podiatrists and a group of unnamed associates orchestrated a scheme to defraud the insurer out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The case details a web of sham medical practices, illegal kickbacks, and fraudulent billing that, according to Allstate, has plagued the state’s No-Fault insurance system.

The lawsuit names Dr. Jeffrey I. Kriegel and Dr. William Michael Levine, along with their respective sole proprietorships and a series of unidentified “John Doe” defendants.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

5 Ways to Keep Politics Out of Your Medical Practice

Here are five ways to keep political discussions from disrupting your medical practice.

2. Model neutrality from leadership down

Employees take their cues from practice owners and managers. When leadership stays neutral — avoiding political commentary, pins, or signage in the workplace — staff are more likely to follow suit.

As Physicians Practice notes, managing workplace conflict begins with consistent communication and modeling the behavior you expect. If the tone at the top remains focused on patient care and respect, that culture will naturally filter through to the rest of the team.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
The 7 Worst Assets to Leave Your Kids or Grandkids

Leaving these assets to your loved ones may be more trouble than it’s worth. Here's how to avoid adding to their grief after you're gone.

5. Vacation properties

Inherited vacation properties are another potential financial and emotional landmine, especially if you’re leaving one to multiple family members. “Kids behave when the parents are still alive, but once they’re gone, that’s when the fighting really starts,” said Carbone. “I’ve seen siblings stop speaking to each other due to fights over an inherited vacation property.”

Disagreements can pop up over how often each can use the property, who owes what for the repairs, whether they should sell, and whether they should buy one of them out and at what value, especially if one heir lives far away and doesn’t want their share. Even if everyone is on good terms, a vacation property does come with considerable expenses like maintenance, property taxes, insurance and any remaining mortgage. These costs could outweigh the value of the vacation property to your heirs.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM CODINGHELPLINE.COM
Query:  Can Associate Bill with My NPI Number?

I was at a meeting last weekend and someone brought up that you can bill both sides of one big toenail on the same date. I’m not so sure but can you? If you can’t, why not?

Codinghelpline com Subscriber

Response from Codinghelpline.com

If you perform a nail procedure, whether permanent or not, on the medial and lateral sides of the same nail, you are not permitted to bill for each procedure separately. There is no modifier that you can attach to unbundle this. The codes involved in billing for nail procedures are per nail unit, whether medial or lateral, or even both sides of the same nail. Additional coding is only permitted if the procedures are performed on different nails.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)

I am so sorry to hear about Irwin (Irv) Mann's death. Dr. Mann (Irv) was an attending at Northlake Community Hospital when I was a resident in 1970. He left a permanent impact on me with his infectious smile and willingness to help the residents in any way he could. When asked how he was doing, he always responded with "PERFECT", a response I admit to this day, I stole from him.

I only learned later that his life was anything but "perfect". He just didn't want to burden anyone else with his problems. He practiced near me in the '70s in the Chicago Western suburbs and we became close friends. He was an inspiration to me and others and will be sorely missed. RIP, Irv.
