VA Podiatrist Supervises Temple Students at Marine Corps Marathon
Ben Pearl, DPM provided podiatric medical coverage during the 44th running of the Marine Corps Marathon in his hometown of Arlington, VA. Dr. Pearl, a Fellow of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, supervised a team of podiatric medical students from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM).

Dr. Pearl was chosen by Howard Palamarchuk, DPM, one of his former mentors and professors, to assist with the race coverage as Dr. Palamarchuk was unable to take part in this year. The medical team worked side by side with physical therapy and critical care in the main medical tent.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
IN Podiatrist Discusses Gout as a Cause of Foot Pain
Scott Neville, DPM, a podiatrist in Mooresville, IN, says that for some people, pain and swelling in the foot can be a sign of gout. "[Gout is] a type of painful inflammatory arthritis caused by too much uric acid in the blood," Dr. Neville explains. "Tophi—which are uric acid crystal deposits that look like lumps under the skin—commonly develop [in the feet], although they can [also] be found in joints throughout the body."
|
Dr. Scott Neville |
In many cases, gout can be managed by standard therapies and lifestyle changes. However, some people suffer from uncontrolled gout, which can cause long-term damage.

MEETING NEWS |
Bahamas Podiatric Medical Association Holds 2nd Annual Conference
Joseph S. Fox, DPM, MPH, Consultant for Community Affairs and Public Health for the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, attended the Bahamas Podiatry Medical Association Second Annual Conference, which emphasized new hope for the diabetic foot. Dr. Fox was interviewed on Bahamian National Television on his role in the Bahamas and the urgency for podiatrists to address the needs of many hurricane victims who sustained injuries and infection to the feet.
|
Healthcare team seeing patients in the Bahamas |
The well-attended conference specifically focused on the early diagnosis and prevention of DFUs. Dr. Daniel Johnson, consultant podiatric surgeon in public health and at the Foot and Ankle Institute has spearheaded a national program on reducing risk factors contributing to diabetic complications and reducing the rate of amputation in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Local health professionals, including physicians, nurses, and allied healthcare workers attended, along with podiatrists and physicians from Canada, Argentina, and other countries from around the world.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
7 Conveniences Patients Expect from Today's Medical Practices - Part 7
Today’s patients expect the same conveniences from medical practices that they receive from restaurants or retailers. If they don’t get them, they will find another doctor. If practices want to compete in today’s healthcare environment, they need to offer patients convenience. Here are the top 7 things patients expect from their doctor’s office.
7. Availability - Patients don’t get sick only during business hours, and offering a few Saturday appointments no longer caters to their busy lifestyles. With urgent cares and retail clinics offering extended hours daily, if a practice doesn’t adapt its schedule to its patients they’ll get their care from a place that does.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Embedded Ingrown Toenail in a 7 Week Old Baby
Does anybody have any recommendations for a 7 week old who was hospitalized due to an infection from an ingrown toenail at 3 weeks of age. The nail is ingrowing into the distal tuft. I can avulse it, but is there any contraindication at that age? Any help would be appreciated.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Recommendations for Virtual Scribes
I am looking to hire a virtual scribe and wanted to know if anyone has any recommendations for companies that they have used. It's a bonus if the company that they use also has experience with Practice Fusion.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: Narmo Ortiz, DPM
According to statista.com, in 2015, there were nearly 1.1 million doctors of medicine in the U.S., and according to the sourced report cited by Dr. Jacobs, about 3,200 physicians received $500K or more for promotional talks and consulting. In addition, it is also reported that it does not include physicians receiving royalties for research and inventions. So, is this to criticize the right of any person, physicians included, to be paid a royalty or a salary for consulting services, research, or for their intellectual property from an invention?
Most of us in active practice have been invited to industry-sponsored lunches, dinners, and to the occasional sawbones or cadaver labs. Most of us have never been paid, nor will even dream of being paid, such amounts of money in salaries or gifts to even come close to the amounts in the cited report. While I do not necessarily agree with companies luring physicians to use their products with gifts, I do have to argue that the regulations issued by federal and state legislators to prohibit such transactions is plain and simple hypocrisy since most of them are "wined and dined" by industry lobbyists on a daily basis.
At the end of the day, we all agree that we are in this profession to care for our patients and provide them with sound, evidence-based treatment options. In an open market environment, many vendors will come to our door asking us to use their products. It is up to us to decide which one(s) will be appropriate or not to help our patients, not because of a dinner at a nice restaurant.
Narmo Ortiz, DPM, Haines City, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: George Jacobson, DPM
The language of these policies can be tricky as in Dr. Ressler's example. Our elevator was out for 2 weeks after Hurricane Irma, and was not covered. In 1992, I had an overhead policy that paid the overhead for one year. This $5,000 per month was helpful and in addition to and separate from my disability policy. While I was waiting to die from metastatic malignant melanoma, the income from the overhead policy helped ease the burden of hiring a colleague for the interim, while we figured out what to do. There was a 30-day elimination period and we had submit expenses monthly.
The policy was available for up to a two-year period. You may need a lawyer to review your insurance policies. My disability policy still pays me until 65 years old, but a lawyer was needed and a settlement was reached. The insurance company rolled the dice in 1993 and agreed to pay the policy as their actuaries' advised them that they wouldn't be paying for long. I mention this as I had to prioritize what types of insurance would best protect my family. I also have life insurance, but what if you live? How can you get through a difficult stretch? I was 31 when I purchased those plans, 36 when I was diagnosed, and I am now 63. It's never too early to plan.
George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL
