PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Minimal Incision Bunion Surgery Causes Less Trauma: NY Podiatrist

Although it’s becoming more widespread, minimally invasive bunion surgery is still much less common in the United States than in Europe and Asia. Dr. Andrew Glass explained how much less trauma the foot endures with minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Andrew Glass

Glass acknowledged that the learning curve for minimally invasive techniques is steep, but said he prefers it because he thinks it’s better for patients. He understands what it is like to live with pain and permanent scarring, having had several accidents, a metal plate surgically placed in his knee, and an infected jaw that caused an open wound in his mouth. His pain drove his passion to practice minimally invasive surgery. “It is the benefit of my problems,” he explained.

PODIATRIC SUPER GROUPS
EHI Acquires Advanced Foot Care Centers, LLP and Chattanooga Podiatry, LLP

Extremity Healthcare, Inc. (EHI), a leading provider in the diagnosis and treatment of lower extremity diseases, announces the acquisition of Advanced Foot Care Centers, LLP, (AFC) with multiple locations in Georgia and Tennessee. The Podiatry Subsidiary of EHI, Village Podiatry Centers, LLC, was founded by CEO, David N. Helfman, DPM, who truly introduced “The SuperGroup” concept to the podiatric profession.

(L-R) Drs. David Helfman, Ira Kraus, and Mitch Hilsen

The addition of Advanced Foot Care Centers further expands EHI’s reach across Georgia and into Tennessee. “The combination of AFC and EHI, as well as the utilization of our proprietary patient based “one stop shop” model, will improve the physicians’ quality of life and positively impact the patients’ experiences and outcomes,” said Dr. Helfman. “Bringing the CEO of AFC, Ira Kraus, DPM, into our family of healthcare companies will result in greater awareness and brand recognition of EHI in the podiatry profession,” added Mitch Hilsen, DPM and COO of EHI.

International Artist Makes Guest Appearance at NJ Podiatry Practice

On October 22, 2015 artist Pierre Henri Matisse made a guest appearance at New Jersey Foot and Ankle Center’s unveiling of his work. Dr. Daniel Margolin recently acquired a unique cutout piece from Pierre Henri Matisse to share with his staff and patients.

(L-R) Dr. Dan Margolin with Pierre Henri Matisse

Pierre Henri Matisse is the grandson of renowned French artist Henri Matisse. During his formative years, he was always surrounded by art and artists. His father was a sculptor and his mother was a painter, sculptor, and ceramist. He had the opportunity to meet and spend time among some of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, like Pablo Picasso, Georges Baque, Aristide Maillol, Jean Effel, Salvador Dali, Pierre Bonnard, and Marcel Duchamp, to name a few.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

Nine Ways to Reward Your Medical Practice Staff - Part 3

"High-end luxury items are an invaluable way to reward an employee. Give someone $500 and ask them what they did with it, and they'll be hard pressed to tell you. Give them a $500 watch, and as long as it is on their wrist, they'll tell you how they got it, what they did, and what the company was. This is powerful." - Paul Gordon, Rymax Marketing Services

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Medicare Requirement for Positive Fungal Nail Cultures?

Is there a new requirement by Medicare to have positive fungal nail cultures in order to bill for CPT 11720/11721? I received a letter from a lab stating this was now mandatory in addition to the prior requirements of "pain with ambulation", etc.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (JURY VERDICT REPORTER)
From: Martin V. Sloan, MS, DPM

I find it incredible that a surgeon would fuse the healthy joint of a 12-year-old child. He must be one of those "unencumbered by the thought process." This is a clear example of why not everybody should be doing foot surgery.
