| FORENSIC PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS | |
Canadian Podiatrist Was a Pioneer in Forensic Podiatry
Forensic podiatry is limited, but potentially valuable, for the purpose of individual identification using clinical podiatric expertise. The practice of forensic podiatry commenced in Canada and the UK in the early 1970s. Since the 1970s, forensic podiatrists have accompanied law enforcement in crimes in which (the late) Norman Gunn, DPM assisted in bare footprint examinations.
|
|
Dr. Norman Gunn |
Forensic podiatry is the study of the foot or footprints of an individual in a crime scene to get the knowledge and experience in forensic investigations. It utilizes the excellence of the podiatry profession in the application of specialized clinical, practical, and theoretical information and experience in a structured, knowledge-based method in the interpretation of the functioning foot and wider importance of the musculoskeletal system. Forensic podiatry techniques include identification of human footprints, footwear, and gait patterns which are seen or captured on CCTV.

Top Tips to Boost Billing and Collections - Part 6
6. Designate a go-to person for billing
-
Make sure you have one person on your staff who is thoroughly trained and experienced in all things billing.
-
Refer any staff and patient questions or issues to this person.
-
Spend the time and money training your go-to person, too, as your revenue depends on her capabilities. It's also wise to cross-train in case your billing pro has to miss work for a lengthy period.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) | |
From: Joel Lang, DPM
While the mask material might let a particle as small as a virus pass through all by itself, unimpeded, that is not the case. The virus is enveloped in a mist of droplets from your breath and those droplets will be trapped by the mask. Just feel the mask when you take it off. Alternatively, let's look at "worst case scenario". Suppose the mask is not effective and you wear it, then you have "inconvenienced" yourself for nothing. Suppose the mask is effective and you do not wear it, then you endanger the lives of the scores of people you encounter in a day and the thousands of people they might encounter in a week.
If there is any chance that the mask is effective, do you want to ever feel, that because of your "beliefs", you endangered the life of another, or worse caused their death? This is not a "civil rights" issue; this is a "humanitarian" issue. Sadly, while COVID-19 cases are spiking across the country and over 200,000 have died and thousands more each day, why are we still debating whether to wear masks? Wear a mask everyone and keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) | |
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM
Dr. Chaskin poses a query inquiring if any states allowed DPMs to provide COVID-19 testing. An example link was given for Pennsylvania. When I clicked the link, it informed people that due to the COVID-19 crisis, there was an emergency mandate that podiatrists were allowed to triage patients under an MD or DO on any body part as long as they had appropriate training.
This is interesting as if one can prove during the crisis that podiatrists were able to treat wounds above the ankle, then one can argue they can do this when the crisis ends (in states where this is currently prohibited). On first read, it appeared Dr. Chaskin was simply asking if podiatrists were allowed to test people for COVID-19, but after opening the link, I don’t think this was his intent .

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) - PART 1A | |
From: Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH, W. David Herbert DPM, JD
Kudos to Dr. Kalish. Experience trumps many clinical pathways. When you have the experience, you have wisdom that a book cannot teach you.
Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA
I appreciated Dr. Kalish's comments about evidence-based medicine and experience-based medicine. This is somewhat like the arguments against anecdotal evidence and double-blind statistical study-based evidence. I have successfully convinced a jury that another name for evidence-based evidence is cookbook-based evidence and that they must completely rely on the author of the particular cookbook, who I was successfully able to discredit.
Because rules and laws regarding the evidence that can be presented to a jury in a trial vary by state, my argument would have not worked in every state. I do believe that anecdotal experiences of a very experienced surgeon can be useful in clinical situations, even though the accepted evidence-based evidence may be contrary to it.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) - PART 1B | |
From: Bryan C. Markinson, DPM
Although I wish Dr. Levy did not invoke my name in his initial correct comments on this article, the response by Dr. Kalish has degenerated the conversation to a level that I hope to put to rest with this post. There are certain accepted and widely practiced surgical oncology principles that neither the youth of Dr. Levy or the "judgment call of the experienced surgeon" as Dr. Kalish stated, can ignore, dispute, or change.
Neither Drs. Levy, Kalish, or I are musculoskeletal oncologists, the specialty which is charged with the expertise and knowledge and research regarding the initial management of...
