Shoes and Socks Block Sensory Input to the Feet: NY Podiatrist
Each foot is made up of 33 joints, 26 bones, and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, and it is loaded inside and out with sensors. Researchers at the University of British Columbia made a huge discovery in 2002: 104 unique, ultraspeedy "mechanoreceptors" on the sole. They measure pressure and indention, which together tell you how to balance.

"These plantar nerves help you make microsecond adjustments that keep you upright and stable," says New York-based podiatrist Dr. Emily Splichal, who runs barefoot training certifications for medical professionals through her Evidence Based Fitness Academy. "Ever wonder what putting on shoes and socks does to this vital input? It blocks it and forces the bigger, less-precise sensors in the ankle and lower leg to do the job instead."

ColoradoCare Would Replace Obamacare with Statewide Single-Payer Plan
With Colorado’s shaky Obamacare exchange in peril, some healthcare advocates are calling for voters to scrap it and replace it with something far more ambitious. Proponents of a statewide single-payer healthcare system have submitted 156,107 signatures for verification, far more than the 98,492 required to qualify for the November 2016 ballot, to the Colorado secretary of state’s office.
The program, called ColoradoCare, comes with a steep price tag: $25 billion, which would be raised with a 10 percent payroll tax increase. At the same time, the plan would provide all residents with Medicare-style healthcare coverage and allow the state to dump Obamacare.

Query: Matching Procedure Codes to Diagnosis Codes
I am trying to find a reference that shows what CPT codes (e.g., CPT 11000) can be billed with what ICD-10 diagnosis codes. Is there a chart or reference as to what diagnosis code can be used?
Jack Ressler, DPM, Tamarac, FL
Response: The APMA Coding Resource Center (apmacodingrc.org), in addition to containing the most comprehensive of ICD-10 features for foot and ankle specialists, also includes a CPT tab containing, among other things, procedural CPT codes links to both potential ICD-9 (for residual claims) and ICD-10 codes.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1 | |
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM asked about "down-coding" which some practitioners believe is a "safety tactic" to avoid audits and the government complaints. Deliberate under-coding is not a reliable or safe tactic. The government knows that some cases you see (should) require detailed examinations and detailed chart notes. They expect to see them; and they expect to see them documented.
In order to be covered by Medicare, a treatment must be "medically necessary." There is a wide variation by specialty that defines what medical necessity actually...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 2 | |
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
The particulars of this case are quite reminiscent of one perpetrated by Medicare more than a decade ago on DPMs in New England. Those of us who saw patients in nursing homes (NH) received a letter indicating that the code we had been using for an initial examination in the NH was NOT the one we should have been using, but instead a different one that reimbursed at a lower level.
My bill from Medicare was slightly more than $8K, payable immediately, subject to offset of future billings if not paid in 30 days. I called Medicare for an explanation and was informed that I was...
