Aussie Podiatrist Part of Medical Team Researching Use of Stem Cells
A Geelong-based medical research team is generating some exciting results, using stem cells to save three patients from having a leg amputation. The research, not previously done in Australia, involves taking bone marrow stem cells from the hip, spinning them down, and injecting them back into the body to improve blood supply to the leg. Deakin University fourth year medical student Adam Morrow is another important part of the research team. A podiatry graduate who has a family history of vascular disease, Morrow has a particular interest in the results.

Adam Morrow |
“My grandfather actually had a history of vascular disease and suffered with ulcers and pains, so I suppose to see other individuals benefit from an intervention has been quite fulfilling,” he says. At a recent international vascular meeting in Sydney, Morrow was awarded best poster for his presentation to colleagues about the project. “In comparison, it is a small trial, but it's good to receive that recognition,” he said.

Aussie Podiatrists Recommend Barefoot Walking for Children
Kylie McCulloch, from the Australian Podiatry Association, believes that walking barefoot gives children better foot strength, flexibility, circulation, and proprioception – the sense of how the body is positioned relative to the ground. But she says running barefoot should be reserved for familiar and safe surfaces, and shoes are appropriate 90 per cent of the time.

|
Kylie McCoulloch and Tim Bransdon |
According to podiatrist and father-of-three Tim Bransdon, “The foot has almost the same amount of nerve endings and dexterity as the hand, and using cushioned, heavy, rigid shoes like many traditional school shoes doesn’t allow the foot to send vital feedback back to the brain which can help kids develop into healthy, thriving adults."

MN Podiatrist's Son Takes Family Bridge Playing Tradition to a World-Class Level
It was Friday afternoon, and the four bridge players sat in the comfortable living room of the Kristensens' home in Duluth's Morley Heights neighborhood. But one of these four was not like the others. Dr. Curt Kristensen, a podiatrist, has played bridge since his dad taught him how to play in 1980. His son Ben, on the other hand, is the only teenager in Duluth who plays bridge competitively. He's also among the best young bridge players in the world. The evidence: In August, Ben was in the six-member USA 1 team that earned the silver medal among teams whose players are younger than 21 at the World Youth Team Championships in Istanbul.

Ben and his father Dr. Curt Kristensen |
Ben does much of his bridge-playing online. During the past couple of years, he and his dad haven't typically been partners. "I don't really offer him much other than transportation to and from tournaments, paying his entry fees and encouraging him," Curt Kristensen said. "From a technical level, since 2012, I haven't really provided him that much."

| SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS | |
Bret Ribotsky: What suggestions can you offer when dealing with excessive bleeding in patients with diabetes and collagen vascular disease?
|
|
Dr. Gary Glick |
Gary Glick, MD (vascular surgeon): Controlling bleeding is always a challenge in patients with a system failure as you might be dealing with a bleeding calcaneus. I often am dealing with a bleeding liver, so you need to think through your options (often in advance). I always have “fibrin glue” on standby, and I think all foot and ankle surgeons should also. Diabetics who bleed often require more intense post-op follow-up, like in the ICU. Those with rheumatoid arthritis also require more follow-up with regard to wound healing.
Meet the Masters airs live every Tuesday night. This week's guest is to be announced. You can register for this and future events by clicking here

Query: Therapeutic Diabetic Footwear and Orthotists and Prosthetists
I have been following the topic of diabetic shoes for some time and have elected NOT to provide shoes for my patients due to the potential for fraud if MY records do not have the appropriate information-especially the PCP notes with all that they are required to state for compliance. As a result, I have been referring my patients to several local O&P facilities and the patients seem to have no problem obtaining shoes and inserts. Are the orthotists and pedorthists required to obtain the SAME information as we are? Are they exempt or do they have another means of providing footwear for diabetics? If they do not, what is their liability, if any?
Charles F. Ross, DPM, Pittsfield, MA
Editor's Note: Dr. Kesselman's response follows in the next section.

RE: Therapeutic Diabetic Footwear and Orthotists and Prosthetists (Charles Ross, DPM)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
First, the long answer to your question with some background: As a podiatric physician, you are acting as both the prescribing physician and possibly also the supplier. In your capacity as the prescribing physician, you may perform the local foot exam which is required by the Therapeutic Shoe LCD.
The supplier must obtain the medical records from the managing physician, obtain the certification statement from the MD/DO, who specifically is managing the DM patient, and the prescribing physician's foot exam must be agreed to, initialed by, etc. the physician managing the DM patient. Suppliers must do their own foot and fitting and dispensing examinations and comply with...

From: Philip McKinney, DPM
The battery in question appears to be a simple AA four-pack. Thus 4.8v. The specs suggest that they are using 3000mAmps. I recommend taking it down to Battery Plus or a similar store and have them build you one. It should cost about $35. You can build your own with basic soldering skills for about $10.

Fictional NY Podiatrist is Protagonist in New Mehlman Novel
Forever to be known for coining “yada yada” and “double-dipping,” Seinfeld writer Peter Mehlman has published his first novel, It Won’t Always Be This Great (Bancroft, 374 pages, $25). It is a long monologue, a story told by a Long Island, NY podiatrist to his one-time fraternity brother, who is comatose.

Walking home one night, the podiatrist twists his ankle on a bottle. Infuriated, he picks it up and throws it through the window of a store owned by a prominent Orthodox Jew. Unfortunately, his impulsive act sets a series of events in motion.
