Stretch Your Feet to Prevent Plantar Fasciits: IL Podiatrist
|
|
Dr. Bela Pandit |
Did you know you can — and should — stretch your feet on a regular basis, especially if you exercise a lot? If not, you risk plantar fasciitis, which is a fancy way of saying the tissue on the bottom of the foot gets irritated and inflamed. "Stretching the foot before any physical activity can help to alleviate symptoms, as well as icing after," says Dr. Bela Pandit. Over-the-counter arch supports can also help.

Memorial 5K Run to be Held in Honor of PA Podiatrist Who Died of Breast Cancer
Dr. Gina Carlo, a local podiatrist and avid runner who died in November of breast cancer, probably would not have wanted a memorial 5K run held in her honor to be named solely for her, said her friend, Debbie Minton. “She would hate it if it was just called the Gina Carlo Memorial 5K Run,” Ms. Minton said. So, she and a small group of other longtime friends of Dr. Carlo organizing the race named it after a song from her favorite musician, Bruce Springsteen. The Thunder Road 5K Walk/Run will be held Saturday, Nov. 7.
|
|
Dr. Gina Marie Carlo |
The goal is to hold the race in memory of Dr. Carlo yearly as a fundraiser to create a scholarship in her name at the Carbondale school that was her alma mater. A member of its first graduating class in 1976, Dr. Carlo had been an honor student, captain of the cheerleading squad, a homecoming princess, and “a typical all-American girl,” Ms. Minton said.

Aussie Podiatry Students Struggles in a Flailing Economy
It's no secret that South Australia is struggling. The southern state has the highest rate of unemployment in the country and a string of job losses in the manufacturing industry means the worst of the pain is likely still ahead. For 19-year-old Daniel Meredith, things have gotten so dire that last week he turned to an Adelaide forum on the social media site reddit with the hope someone in the city might be able to help in his ongoing job search. “My job hunt has become so desperate I’ve come here,” he wrote in the post. “Does ANYONE know ANYWHERE that’s hiring?”
|
|
Daniel Meredith |
Daniel graduated from Cabra Dominican College in 2013 with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank in the high 90s. He is studying podiatry at The University of South Australia but has been looking for a job since finishing school. Apart from a stint working at an e-recycling plant immediately after finishing school, he gets occasional work with a neighbor’s promotion company. But jobs can be months apart and there has been none on offer for more than two months. “I currently have no savings to speak of or disposable income. My income is irregular and insufficient to pay for fees and textbooks,” he said.

MA Podiatrist Opens Holistic Practice
Dr. Paula Fontaine's Holistic Healing Center in Westminster has officially opened its doors. Following the closure of Dr. Linda Smith's Westminster holistic practice in July, Dr. Fontaine welcomed the opportunity to continue Dr. Smith's legacy of holistic care.
|
|
Dr. Paula Fontaine |
Dr. Fontaine received her doctorate in podiatric medicine from Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine and graduated from a podiatric surgical residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. Although her practice is grounded in conventional medicine, she has always encouraged patients to embrace alternative approaches to speed healing, including massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic.

FL Podiatrist and Husband in DC to Promote Healthy School Lunches
Chef Hari Pulapaka and his wife Dr. Jenneffer Pulapaka, co-owners of Cress restaurant in downtown DeLand, are gathering with other chefs and restaurateurs from across the country in Washington, D.C., on Monday to urge federal government officials and U.S. lawmakers to adopt higher standards for school lunch programs. The 50 restaurateurs from 37 states are part of a group called Chef Action Network, which Hari Pulapaka helped start as a founding board member.

Bret Ribotsky: With all the different theories on biomechanics today, what are your overall thoughts?
|
|
Dr. Justin Wernick |
Justin Wernick: My theorem is that I want the foot to resupinate after heel off. If the foot remains pronated at heel off, problems will arise.

Nine Ways to Reward Your Medical Practice Staff - Part 1
Let's face it: Without the staff members who support your medical practice, patients wouldn't be greeted, bills wouldn't be paid, files wouldn't be sorted, and your practice would quickly fall apart at the seams. Now that we're closing in on another turn of the calendar — it's the perfect time to give a boost to your medical practice.
Use the remaining months in this calendar year to invigorate and re-energize your office with incentives for a job well done or simply to thank these hard-working employees for all they do. Here are a few ideas you may want to consider implementing in your practice.
"One thing we do is host a yoga day twice a month for staff. We bring in star yoga experts who conduct an open yoga class right after work. Frequently, we cater them with healthy snacks like fruits and other platters. - Dr. John Zhang

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1 | |
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM
Does this case include illegal acts of under-coding? I read that some issues involve allegations of "routine foot care." Therefore, my reading is that part of the government's case-in-chief appears to be about some submitted billing codes that should have been up-coded and/or lacked appropriate supporting documentation. I often meet practicing podiatrists who think under-coding it is a kind of legal way for podiatrists (and their medical billing and coding people) to guard themselves against becoming accused of overcharging and over-billing. By contrast, I have heard experts say it is just as illegal as up-coding.
I have heard one expert in federal court relate where "one wrong CPT code was used and another 'correct' CPT code should have been used" and where "the right CPT code was used it should not have been used." Even though a procedure was performed, there is "no evidence" that the procedure was in fact performed. However, this was based upon experts examining the documentation supporting the medical billing code records at issue, rather than being based on examining the patient.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 2 | |
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Now you've heard the medical and legal side of the Buggiani case. As Kevin West has succinctly put it, this was a terrible waste of the taxpayers' dollars. The amount of money Dr. Bugiani and the other four defendants paid back (only one of the other four paid back anything - a measly few hundred dollars) is a pittance compared to what the state taxpayers in VT must have paid for this persecution (no, this was not a typo) over the last several years. To say nothing of the audit defense funds which are also now being stretched to their limits, resulting in another reason why our malpractice premiums are rising.
Unfortunately, this is not likely to be the last of these types of cases, as attorneys who wish to climb the promotional ladder often take on these types of cases for self-adulation and a promotion, with little thought of the havoc this creates for innocent individuals.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Woodside, NY
