CA Podiatrist Reality TV Star Visits TUSPM
Ebonie Vincent, DPM from TLC’s hit show My Feet Are Killing Me visited the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM)on October 1, 2022, for the Experience Podiatry Day. This event was held for prospective students to learn about podiatry and meet with experts in the field. Dr. Vincent was joined on a panel with some of TUSPM’s alumni: Dean John Mattiacci DPM, William Long, DPM, William Harris, IV, DPM, Lesly Robinson, DPM, and Residents Patrick Bik, DPM and Christine Rihn, DPM.

During the event, high school students had a Q&A session with the panel followed by learning workshops on suturing, grafting, and casting. The Experience Podiatry Day at TUSPM was a successful event to introduce young and bright students to the field of podiatry.

NY Podiatrist Aids Passenger in Distress on Airplane
Many dramas have featured calls for a doctor aboard an airplane. Last week. NYCPM’s Samantha Landau, DPM, MPH filled that role in real life. On board a Delta flight to Denver, Dr. Landau answered the call for a doctor and assisted a passenger having an emergency related to their Type 1 diabetes. Dr. Landau says she was happy to assist, is glad that the passenger is now doing well, and has received official recognition from the airline.

Dr. Landau received her doctorate from NYCPM in 2018, received her DPM/MPH dual degree, and completed her residency at Metropolitan Hospital Center in 2021. She completed a fellowship at NYCPM in biomechanics and gait-related disorders in the lower extremity in children and adults in 2022. She is full-time faculty at NYCPM, bridging the gap between essential biomechanics and surgical procedure selection.

APMWA Announces 37th Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 37th Annual Student Writing Competition.

All papers MUST be non-technical in nature. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

CA Podiatrist Featured at American College of Surgeons Symposium
The American College of Surgeons held its annual conference in San Diego, hosting surgeons from around the world. Part of the conference included a session on limb preservation, featuring lectures by leading surgeons involved in limb preservation in the USA. These included Profs. Vincent Rowe, Tze Woei Tan, and David G. Armstrong of the University of Southern California, Dr. Christopher Bibbo of the Rubin Institute of Advanced Orthopaedics, and Dr. Misty Humphries of UC Davis.

The session was chaired by Profs. Woei Zhou of University of Arizona and Dr. Kelly Kempe of Oklahoma University, Tulsa. This is the second time the College has held a symposium on the diabetic foot and limb preservation, the last being in October of 2010 in Washington, DC.

Here are six strategies to mitigate provider burnout in your practice.
5. Provider-to-Patient Support Program
Implement a program among physicians that will reinforce the provider-patient relationship and make it stronger than ever. These can be personal, conversational calls – not transactional – that are approached in the same way one might approach checking in with a friend you haven’t called in a while. There’s no expectation beyond checking in, demonstrating to our patients that we care. A growing body of studies suggests health care professional burnout is frequently associated with poor quality of care and less optimal outcomes for patients.

| QUERIES (CLINICAL) | |
Query: Port-Wine Stain on Foot of a 3 Year Old
I need some help. Does anyone have experience with port-wine stains on the foot? A 3-year-old patient came in with her mom being concerned about this. The patient had been diagnosed by her PCP. The mother was concerned that the patient has pain. However, with my palpation of the lesion and observations in gait, the patient did not look like she was in pain. The mother insisted the patient has pain. The lesion, about 1.5 cm in size, is located on the proximal arch. I'm looking for some ideas on treatments if there are any viable options.
