UTRGV Approves First Podiatry Program in Texas
The Texas Higher Education Board has approved a request from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGC) to create a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree with a major in podiatric medicine for the UTRGV School of Podiatry. Lawrence Harkless, DPM, Interim Dean of the UTRGV School of Podiatry and professor of surgery in the School of Medicine, said the journey to approval has been a lengthy process but well worth the wait.

Dr. Lawrence Harkless |
This approval comes with the understanding that UTRGC will hire three faculty members before enrolling students for its fall 2022 inaugural class, pending accreditation by both the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

FL Podiatrist Joins Editorial Board of the Journal of Internal Medicine
The American Journal of Internal Medicine has added Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH to submit papers to their journal and become an editorial board member (a reviewer). This resulted from an article he authored "Podiatric physicians and genomic medicine: The coming medical revolution: Are we (getting) ready?" published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

|
Dr. Leonard Levy |
Prior to his retirement as Associate Dean for Research and Innovation at Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Levy was asked to represent the college on a panel in the National Institutes of Health National Human Genomics Institute regarding genomics in primary care. The American Journal of Internal Medicine is the official journal of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, a group comprising internal medicine department chairs at more than 125 medical schools across the U.S.

NY Podiatrist Owns Yarn Store
Felicia Eve, DPM owns String Thing Studio in Brooklyn, NY, one of maybe a half-dozen Black-owned yarn shops in the country. String Thing Studio shares a brownstone with an Indian restaurant in the family-friendly Park Slope neighborhood.
|
|
Dr. Felicia Eve |
A podiatrist who set aside her practice to stay home with the kids before deciding to pursue her passion, Eve says she chose the word “studio” deliberately. She wanted a place where crafters would feel comfortable plopping into a chair for an hour or two to knit.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Top Tips to Boost Billing and Collections - Part 4
4. Verify insurance.
-
Do this on the phone before and at every patient visit.
-
When you verify insurance, be sure to also confirm the patient’s contact information. People change jobs, switch email accounts, ditch landlines, and move across town but don’t always remember to notify their physicians.
-
Regardless of how you send bills, be sure to avoid sending statements to the wrong address.
-
Be sure you have a way to follow-up if patients don’t pay to avoid payment delays.

RE: Philadelphia Area Podiatrist Retires After 46 Years
From: Alicia Canzanese, DPM
For the past forty-six years, Gary Gordon, DPM, felt privileged to practice podiatric medicine. His decision to retire was not an easy one. He loves the field he chose. He enjoyed his patients, treating and caring for so many, whether it was general podiatric issues, surgery, or sports medicine. During his career, Dr. Gordon has had the opportunity to address local groups, as well as national and international podiatric and sports medicine organizations. He is a past-president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine and the American Running Association.
|
|
Dr. Gary Gordon |
He is a true pioneer of podiatric sports medicine in the local area as a volunteer with the Penn Relays for many years and his previous involvement with the Philadelphia 76ers. In what would have been his forty-seventh year of practice, COVID-19 hitting our country forced a lot of unwanted changes, including his decision to retire from practice.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Greg Cohen, DPM, Stephen Kominsky, DPM
I’ve been using a percutaneous .062 inch K-wire for “mini Austins” for many years with great success. I leave the K-wire in for 6 weeks and remove it with topical anesthesia in the office.
Greg Cohen, DPM, Brooklyn, NY
For the past several years, I have been using the snap-off screws from In2Bones. For the fifth metatarsal, the 2.0 screw, 11 mm is the perfect size. I typically use two of them to prevent a rotation at the osteotomy site. They are so simple, I have often said that I wished that I had developed them.

RE: An Open Letter to the Council on Podiatric Medical Education
From: Lee C. Rogers, DPM, et al.
It's Time to Finally Make Wound Care a Mandatory Part of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Training.
Dear Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) Residency Ad Hoc Advisory Committee, As you are completing the arduous task of the required periodic review and revision of CPME Document 320,1 the Standards and Requirements for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies (PMSR), we wish to applaud your efforts on the advancement of podiatry residency training standards over the decades. Today’s podiatrist is well-trained in surgery because of your actions and those of other CPME committees to ensure the standards are being followed. However, there remains one glaring omission from the PMSR training in Document 320, last revised in 2018.
Where is wound care? Please note our preference would be to refer to the topic as “tissue repair and wound healing”, since we don’t just care for wounds; we use a combination of...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Brian Kiel, DPM
I reject Dr. Secord's assertions, or his referencing articles not in evidence, nor any links. I offer this article.
Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL
Dear Dr. Secord, please walk through a hospital E.R. maskless and laughing; then tell me how harmless COVID-19 is. Of course, a virus can pass through a mask, but it limits its dispersion. Denial of its virulence has killed thousands. The theory you espoused has been repeated by certain politicians but the opposite is stated by experts like Dr. Fauci. I think I will take his word for it.
Brian Kiel, DPM, Memphis, TN

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) | |
From: Andrew I. Levy, DPM
It is impossible to underestimate the credentials of the authors of this article. I found it interesting but lacking several important surgical consideration factors. Dr. Bryan Markinson has taught us numerous times that is important to obtain a biopsy before excising a mass. The importance of finding out whether something is malignant or benign before surgically excising it can make a major impact on surgical procedures and/or subsequent referrals. Should the excised mass be found to be malignant, then the opportunity to treat the area is limited because of the change in identifiable margins.
I was surprised with this large mass that there was no mention of an MRI to evaluate the extent of the mass before the dissection began so that appropriate surgical planning can be made for following the mass to its extents. I was also surprised that there was no mention of an intra-operative frozen section biopsy being obtained before the mass was excised as well as looking at the clinical photograph that there is no suture marker to identify orientation for the pathologist; such as proximal, distal, or dorsal.
Andrew I. Levy, DPM, Jupiter, FL

From: Howard Lepolstat, DPM
With due respect to Dr. Nau, his statement about shoes being vital for flat feet is somewhat misleading. Certainly, shoes are very important for anyone suffering with a symptomatic level of this condition. However, giving shoes the status of vital is comparable to giving eyeglass frames the status of vital for a vision problem. The vital part for the glasses is the lens. The frames are incredibly important since they keep the lenses properly aligned with the eyes. In a similar fashion, shoes are very important in keeping the orthotic device properly aligned with the foot. But it is the orthotic device itself that is vital.
